Over the past week my 2 week old has had quite a few colicy episodes. I think it might be something I ate, and read a few places that cow's milk might be the culprit. I was wondering if anyone else has tried eliminating it from their diet, and if it's necessary to eliminate all dairy along with it (yogurt, cheese, etc.).

It's very uncommon for a baby to be allergic to the milk a mother consumes, but it does happen. I would try it for 2 weeks......it can take that long to see a difference, it couldn't hurt, but a 2 week old having colicy episodes is VERY normal. Have you tried swaddling, and rocking at the same time? White noise etc? There is a book called the Happiest Baby on the Block, it can be a lifesaver for a mom of a colicy baby. Good luck!

Hey Dizzy,
Yes, cow's milk gave my baby alot of gas. The worst was eggs, just plain eggs. I used to have eggs for breakfast, this gave her HORRIBLE gas. I cut milk and eggs out and she has been excellent ever since. I only cut out milk and eggs. I eat all other dairy products, spicy foods, beans, broccoli, etc., none of that seems to bother her. It just takes time to find out what bothers them and can be VERY frustrating I know.

From the time he was 2 weeks old, I noticed that my son had horrible colic 5-10 hours after I ate dairy. He can't tolerate any dairy or eggs, which sucks because I love those foods. But the sacrifice is well worth it, and since I've stopped eating all the culprits, he's now gas-free at 8.5 weeks old (usually this is the age when colic tends to flare up).
Be careful with soy products too, because they sometimes add milk protein to them, and I read that it's the milk protein that babies have trouble with, not necessarily the lactose.
The good news is that once their tummies become more developed, we can slowly add back these foods. :)

Ditto to what Dizzy says about The Happiest Baby on the Block. I thought my baby was colicy as well, but then I realized it was typical newborn "yelling." I couldn't figure out why my baby would not stop crying. I rented the Happiest Baby from my library and it changed our lives. There are tons of reviews on Amazon if you want more information.

My son's colic started at 2 weeks, like clockwork, and lasted until he was 4 months. I eliminated all dairy, eggs, spicy and gassy foods for two weeks twice and it didn't change a thing--I read labels and everything. It sucked. I lost so much weight and it didn't seem to do a thing. Some babies will react to very small amounts of dairy if they are allergic so the pediatrician said you have to eliminate it all to determine if that's the culprit. I also watched my happiest baby on the block dvd over and over and over again. We swaddled and bounced and used the pacifier. Nothing worked. Tried gas drops too. Nothing. I guess what I'm trying to say is that a certain percentage of the time there may not be anything that will cure a true colicy baby except time, so don't stress yourself out or starve yourself thinking it's something you're doing or eating. Sometimes I think it has nothing to do with the belly, rather it's a baby's immature nervous system--pretty certain after all the research I've done that this was the case with my little one. Try the 'tricks' and if nothing works, well, hang in there, it doesn't last forever.
