My husband and I just started to work with a fertility doctor, and they have started us on all these tests and I was wondering if anyone here has had this one test done and what should I expect from it? The doctor explained it but it's better to hear from experience I think.
Thanks,
Amy

Hi i haven t done it myself but i work in a hospital setting and assisted in HSg exams several times. It is very similar to a smear tests in terms of discomfort. Dye is inserted to visualise the patency of your fallopian tubes. The more you relax during the exam the less uncomfotable it will be. You may experience slight spotting after too. I wouldn t worry much if i were you .
Have you been TTC for a long time?
Good luck feel free to ask

Hi - I had a HSG test last year and for me it was painful. first off, my cervical opening is small and my uterus is tilted so the doctor had a hard time getting the catheter in. Every time he jabbed at the hole it really hurt. when he was finally in and injected the dye he had me turn to the right the turn to the left and I was able to see the image on a monitor.
During the procedure I was having bad cramps (like AF but stronger) and after for a few hours I had on and off cramps as well. Make sure you take some extra strength tylenol 30 minutes before and dont worry -- once i found out that everything was ok i realized IT WAS WORTH IT!
Good Luck!

Hi. I had one in July and it was a little uncomfortable but I did not have a painful experience (want2bmom - sorry that happened to you. I had a friend who has a small opening and they could not perform the test on her).
First they clean the area and once the catheter is in and they inject the dye, they take the images and have you tilt just slightly to each side to take different angles. I took some advil about an hour before the test. Also, bring a small maxi-pad with you as there is some leakage after the test. I did have a little cramping afterwards but it was not so bad.
This test let me know that I had two blocked tubes. I am having them removed next month and will be proceeding to IVF.
Good luck with everything.

My husband and I have been trying for about 7mths now. So we thought we would turn to a Fertility Dr so that we could find out why we are not getting pregnant and if we can, on our own. So byt the end of this month we should know something.

I had one done and It didn't hurt at all. Actually, I didn't even know they had done anything it happened so quick. My cervix is always slightly open though because i've delivered 3 children vaginally. Good luck to you
