View Full Version : Myofascial pain on both sides of face?!

Still no diagnosis of FM.
Last year I started having pain in the right side of my face. First I thought it was a sinus infection and was treated for that, then I thought it was a salivary gland issue, which my doctor thought it could be too. She sent me to an ENT who said it wasn't. My dentist said it wasn't TMJ. It felt like pressure in my jaw and mouth, and even in my throat sometimes. My face felt swollen, even though there wasn't any appearance of that. My ear felt congested. This lasted a few months on and off. Then I went to another ENT and he diagnosed me with myofascial pain syndrome from tension and teeth clenching. I do have anxiety disorder and health anxiety.

That pain went away, and I now only occasionally feel tightness on that side. Now I'm having the very similar symptoms on the left side. The only difference is that I actually have a spot behind my bottom tooth on the left that feels irritated when I eat acidic foods. I just had a dental check-up and everything looked fine. I really want to go back to the doctor, but I know they think I'm crazy already cause I went several times for the right-sided face pain and abdominal problems I"ve had.

I really wanted to know if other people had this problem. I just need reassurance that I don't have some underlying salivary gland problem. I don't think it would switch sides, but like I said, I have health anxiety. It is a horrible thing to have to live with.

I forgot to mention I notice often that my shoulders are hunched, and my neck muscles and top of my shoulder are sore on that side.

My lymph nodes are swollen now, especially on left side, but then again I have a cold.
But the thing that really worries me is a small, pea size hard lump I found on the left side of my neck. It's about 2 to 3 inches under ear and above shoulder, on the side of my neck. Is that a lymph node?

Hello Wondering, I have exactly the same pain you described on
the left side. My jaw hurts, my ear hurts and almost like the tonsile
area.It feels swollen and hurts all the time. This has been going on
for 4 or 5 days. I have quit wondering what causes the pain. Since fibro
made it's apperance, I never know where the next painful area will be.
I just ride it out and trust it will pass.
I wouldn't worry about the little lymph node. They often pop up in the
neck area where they fight all the little infections in the sinuses, mouth
and tooth area. Sometimes they get calcified and stay forever. If you
are worried, go to the doctor to put your mind at ease. May God bless you
and give you a good nights rest.

Thanks bilij. I am also convinced I have fibro, and have posted on that board several times. My doctor thinks I'm just a hypochondriac, so I try not to go if I don't have to. I'm pretty sure this swollen gland came on with this cold, it's just such a coincidence that it's on the same side as my pain, and not on both sides. That's what has me worried. I'm so sick of worrying about my health though.

hi wondering,
may i suggest you find another doctor? there are so many to choose from. it is pointless to have a doctor you do not have a trusting open relationship with. waste of time and money.
i went thru many till i found my dear laura. 17 doctors and 8 years of searching. it was worth it. i feel absolutely heard by her. she knows fibro inside out and admits her helplessness to alter my pain. she always places the choices in front of me and says think on it and let me know what you want to do. she knows i am a logical being who will do her research, think it over and then make my choice.
oh yes, on cmp. i get it everywhere. it picks and chooses. mostly it loves my bladder. a weak area for me anyway. the inflammation causes irritation and then infection. i will be on sulfa drugs the rest of my life.
so yes, you can get it on both sides of your face or anywhere for that matter. facia sheaths every cell in our bodies. every cell.
hope you feel better soon. may i suggest warm cloths on your face for maybe 10 minutes once an hour or as needed. i find heat really helps ease the discomfort and soothe that silly facia.
peace,

The cruddy part of myofascial pain that I have learned is that it can go anywhere, at any time, and stay for as long as it decides unless you get some type of treatment. Although "they" say with trigger point therapy you can eliminate it or it moves to another area, I have not had such fortune. All I can say is hang in there, and keep checking with doctors that can give you answers and help!

hello op, I feel ya pain..very freaky misurable pain. I was dx'd with fm several months ago but, I am pretty sure I have had it for years along with cf. doctors never could find out or tell me what was going on much less what it was..lol it was a lot eaiser to tell me we cant find anything wrong all your test are negitive..I stoped going to doctors for years because of this. the anzaity and depression is horrible by itself and on a bad day or flare makes a feller want to run screaming naked snatching all hair out as you scream and run with no perticular place to go. man do I ramble on sorry..this face pain I am having now is what you decribe you have it's all so crazy the pain moving around its like a poster said I also never know whats next, what will hurt, fall off, fall out, show up or disapear..most times I dont look in the mirror..I am only 43 I did that opra test? it said I answered thoes question like I was in my 70's..an yes I have looked in the mirror and screamed...lol now, back to the face pain..for me its on the right side of my face..the symptoms are jaw pain..gum pain ear pain/eye pain, sinus pain migrane pain..then there is the neck thingy that swells..to cut it down the whole side of my face and head feels like one hell of a toothache and my head will explode and my eyeball will pop out at any moment radiating pain and pressure are unbelivable..I dont tell people my face hurts..I am very scared they will say, well its killing me! I have not told my doctor about this..I will next trip..the thing is she is the doc for a clinic that offers financial scale payments, also she has this accent that I can not for the life of me understand.
.I dont want to be rude..the last visit she changed my bp med.
and therefore I had two bp precription..I ask about that and could not understand her answer..which depressed me more  .
so since i have a memory problem I just stop taking the first prescription for bp. I am going to ask for a nurse who speaks english to translate for me the next visit. I have become a hermit for the last year and it takes a mirical for me to leave my house. grrr what i am saying is I will post when I find out what this pain in my face is or what it is not. but, most of all how to make it stop hurting..last night i was up at 3;30 am this morning it was 1;30 am it is now three twelve am..with no naps in between..needless to say I should be hitting my head on the desk from sheer exzaustion
but, noooo I am wide awake and the only clear though is about this constant pain in my face and head..I have my sock filled with rice heated in micro..it sorta kinda helps ease the pain along with excredrian for migranes.
..besides if I happen to fall asleep I would miss my head exploding and my eye popping out..I know to grafic..lol I try to entertain my self..

Hope you all can read this and understand some of it..pleas look over my spelling and hope each and everone with this type of pain feels better..you are not alone...hummmm I think we all should recomend a just venting board..

Has your dentist suggested a night guard you can wear on your upper or lower teeth at night to relax the jaw and prevent clenching and grinding ? Tightening the jaw muscles tends to cause a lot of pain in the jaw, neck and ears.
