I know it is hard to know how many ounces a breast fed baby drinks but is there an approx. amount that they may drink. My little guy is just over 3 months now and I have to go out of town in 6 weeks without him and I need to express milk but I haven't really given him a bottle so I have no idea what he is drinking? Will he drink more ebm out of a bottle then breast? I am going to look on line but I would like to hear from any of you who might know. I know my trip is a ways away but I am already freaking out leaving him.
Thanks.

Hi S!
I asked my doc this very question at the same age (3 months) because I was starting back to work. He thought she would take around 4 oz at a time so I sent her with 5 oz bottles just to be safe. She typically drank around 4 oz, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Anyway, then a little after 4 months old she started drinking 5 oz at a time pretty consistently. Now at almost 6 months she is up to 6 oz bottles at a time. :p

At my daughter's 2 month visit the ped said "is she drinking at least 26 oz. per day?" (she's bottle fed) and she is... so all is well. I guess that's a typical amount for a 2 month old.
She's almost 3 months now and is drinking about 4 oz each feeding, about 7 times per day. I, too, always make sure to have an extra bottle on hand if I'm feeding from a 4 oz bottle, or to make 6 oz if I'm using a larger sized bottle, because ocassionally she'll be REALLY hungry and will take 5-6 oz.

Green & X are right.
Just remember breast fed and formula fed kids take different amounts. Breastmilk from a bottle ds was taking 4oz at 3 months now at 6.5 months he is taking 6oz + - depending on mood.
