I know this is an odd question - but what is baby poo supposed to look and more importantly smell like in the first few months before solids are introduced?

My baby is 2 months old and on breastmilk only. His poos seem normal to me, except for the smell. They say that breastfed babies are supposed to smell less than formula fed babies but my ds smell really quite bad. This is my second baby and I dont remember my first son smelling anywhere near this bad. It smells sort of like off-milk or off-yoghurt.

This colour is mustardy and quite 'wet' looking. Sometimes it has a tiny amount of mucous in it.

What have all you experienced with the colour and smell?

How do I know if it isnt normal? If it isnt normal (the bad smell specifically) what could be causing it?

I dont understand what they mean when they say it should look 'seedy'?

Ps the reason Im asking is he has had a few problems, nothing big, but things that could indicate a bigger problem, and Im curious if this is another indication something is wrong. I described the colour, smell and consistency to the breastfeeding helpline and she said it all sounded normal except the smell, but she didnt know why it would be like that.

I don't have an answer for you. But, perhaps you should inform the pediatrician about this?

Oh my gosh, I just logged onto the boards to ask a similar question and saw this post. My dd was having normal BM's--yellowish, mustardy, at just about every diaper change. Then, two weeks ago, she didn't have a BM for almost 5 days, and when she did, it was dark green. Now, we're lucky if we get one movement a day, and it's still dark green (almost black). She's also been passing really smelly gas a lot too (sorry, TMI). I asked the pediatrician during the period when she went the 5 days without a movement and they said it's normal for a bf'ing baby to go up to a week without a movement, but I have not yet told them about the color change. Has anyone else had this happen and, if so, can shed some light? We're going back to the pediatrician's next week for a Synagis shot, so I'll ask then, but thought maybe I could get some peace of mind here in the meantime. DD is getting expressed breastmilk and was born two months premature. She is three months old (actual age), but 7 weeks corrected. Thanks so much!

I was looking this up yesterday, and there were lots of mothers on this forum all with the same prob, that their babies poo was green to varying degrees. There were lots of different explanations for it. With some it was food your eating, or allergies. Sometimes my baby has green ones, but theyre light green, and the nurse said thats from wind. Couldnt say for sure, but good luck finding out.

I will be seeing the ped in about 4 weeks. The last time I saw him, he actually changed ds pooy nappy himself, and didnt say anything about it being odd. But then he wasnt looking specifically for something being wrong with his poo. Do you think he would have picked it up even if he wasnt looking for it?

Thank you so much for the info. I would say if your ped knows about your ds's BM habits he/she would have said something if they sensed a problem. DD's BMs smelled pretty bad to me, but then again I've had no other experience with baby poo ;) . Does your ped have a call in line? Mine does for one hour every morning to discuss concerns. That way, if they think baby has a problem they will tell us to come in right away rather than wait for a scheduled appt. Being a FTM, I've called the line many, many times!
