I was started on IV Protonix in the ER; then 40mg 2x/day for 4 weeks; then decreased to 40 mg lx/day for 2 weeks (all due to side affects).

Now I'm down to 20mg 2x/day, and have heartburn with alot of what I eat (very restricted diet). I rarely had this symptom before starting Protonix.

Now I'm wondering how you or your Dr. determined when to keep reducing.

Thanks for any feedback....................carole

as yes, the exact same story as me - i was put on IV protonix in the hospital too. twice a day 40 mg. yup. my throat and chest started burning so horribly - doc says I can't "possibly" be hurting that bad cuz he had 99% of my stomach acid suppressed. so he adds carafate to the mix. I was in sooooo much pain I had tears - and the thing is that I felt NOTHING! nadda zip before the Protonix - a little chest tightness is all - that's why I went to the hospital. After a heavy dose of antibiotics to kill H-pylori, now i have LPR and GERD........can't take the PPI's they give me migraines - I am soooooo upset that all these meds seem to have messed up everything. I am working very hard to get myself back on track with probiotics. I really feel for you. I'd say just stop the PPI's cold turkey and see how long you can wing it without them. Maybe your heartburn will spontaeously go away. worth a try. meds can really mess ya up.
