My little guy (3 months) has started to have harder bowel movements. The last couple of days when I would go change a diaper he would have a small bit of poop packed up against his butt. Last night, he was fussy through the night. In the morning, after eating, he was still fussy. (and he's usually a pretty laid back baby). After he eat, he started to make the pooping face. He strained really hard and then started screaming. I immediately took him to change his diaper to see what was going on. Without going into too much detail, I could tell he was very constipated. After great efforts he did get it out. What came out was pretty hard as far as poops go, and quite a bit harder than he's had it before.

He's on Enfamily Prosobee LIPIL soy formula. I've heard that the Soy formulas do sometimes cause firmer poop. Do you think this could be it or could it just be a fluke? My daughter (now almost 3) used the soy and I never experienced this kind of problem with her.

Anyone deal with constipation for an infant and what did you do to help or avoid it?

Thanks

sorry to hear your lo is constipated. my ds had similar issues we were recommended to mmix prune juice 1/2 and 1/2 with cooled boiled water so he could drink it through the day this worked wee. now he is an independant eater lol i mix prunes in his porridge as if i stop on the prunes his bowels return to being slow:)

We had the same issue when our DS was 3 months old---DS is 7 months now. He's a soy drinker too----we were told that apple or prune juice would work really well mixed with formula, however, doc warned us it would cause really bad gas---and when a babe is already constipated---they don't need an additional discomfort like gas. The other option that was given to us was 1-2 ounce of water mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar. Sugar helps the intestines draw water into the stool to help the baby pass their stool---helps soften it up and helps move on! :) It worked wonders---without gas pains and issues!!!! We gave it to DS 1-2 times a day for about a week and then his constipation let up and he was regular again. Then we took him off the water and brown sugar. I didn't have to worry about my little one getting hooked on the sugar water part---he could honestly have taken it or left it either way. :) He doesn't miss it! :) It didn't interrupt with his eating schedule either. :)

Good luck! :)

I have had the same issues with my one year old since he was very small. We were told in the beginning that we could use a little Karo syrup in his bottle twice a day, I don't remember how much it was now. We now use Miralax, which only softens him, but for most babies causes "blowouts" and bad cramping. This past weekend his stool was almost rock hard, no exageration. He screamed until I gave him some Miralax and a glycerin suppository and once he passed the stool, he felt much better. You can also try pulling babies legs up and imitate cycling and rubbing his belly, my son also finds this amusing and relieving.

Those things are awesome! I know that a bit of apple juice in with his milk woudl always help, but those little suppositories just made that poo slide right out TMI! :p

make sure you Ok suppository use with your doctor. don't use them all the time---use them VERY sparingly. the baby's bowls cam become "use to" using them and he will have a hard time using it on his own. They do work from what I've heard though! unless it's am extreme case, I wouldn't use them. :)

I think the apple juice is doing the trick. He had a bit of trouble earlier tonight, but nothing like before and nothing he didn't seem to manage ok. So that was better. And, then he had apple juice earlier this evening. He just had a diaper that definately was not evidence of constipation.
