I've gone through the samething with the panic attacks. Their not to fun. Have u had any test done? Like a upper GI or anything like that. I mean if u have insurance, u could request to have some test run, u know to pin point what is going on. Ease ur mind. u know

hi - i think you might have a too tight LES. have you had a manometry test? it tests sphincter pressures. if your LES is too tight, food could not be making it into your stomach - its getting caught in your esophagus and you are regurgitating it. you may be have esophageal spasms. you may want to ask your doc about doing a manometry test. hope this helps you.

ok kewl thx u, i remeber my doc had me drink some white nasty stuff with X rays and i also had to swallow a pill to and the pill hung in my throat for like 2 sec's and my doc didnt no why so he said it wasnt a big deal because it finally went down but its a big deal to me because im like almost choking on food.
i just dont understand why the food keeps trying to come up out of my throat even with taking 2 nexium a day one pill in the morning and one at night.

because...... if your LES pressure is too high, food gets caught and comes back up - nexium won't fix it. you may need an esophageal dilation. i wonder why your doc didn't question the pill sticking - seems like it is a sign os esophageal spasms. ask him.

None of the Dr.'s told me about "diet". It's THE most important thing to help heal acid reflux, gerd, etc. Google the GERD diet, and to begin with, start with just one food at a time and "graze" all day........rice........celery, carrotts, spinach.......fruit if the sugar doesn't cause a reaction.......no caffeine; no spices; no salad dressing, soy sauce, sugar. Do that for the first few weeks; then slowly add one food at a time, and gradually build the diet that doesn't cause any reactions. Even teas can be a problem.
Be sure to take a strong acidolphilus from the health food store & sip it all day.
And Nexium doesn't work for alot of people. Get a 3rd opinion.......acid reflux & GERD are related.
It's a tough road, but you gotta bite that bullet. I'm in the middle of it, so I know.
Good luck in finding your way.

Spend $10 on a cooler and ice packs and make your own food and pack it in the cooler. You can bring anything for lunch from the grocery store - make your own lunches, etc. Have all the good drinks and healthy food, fruit, etc you want all day in that cooler. Not only will this be a healthier option but cheaper too! In one year you can save, 100's of dollars! Think about what you could invest 100's of dollars into.

Tell your doctor that Nexium isn't working for you. My doc gave me samples of like 3 or 4 different acid reflux pills to see which one worked the best. See if he gives out samples. If not then tell him you need to try a different drug.

Hi
I know when I tried nexium it did not work for me. You should find out from your doctor if there is something else you can try. I have been having a terrible time with reflux and I am going back to the doc today. I find the night the worse. I have to take gravol sometimes just to get the pills down. I have been on alot of prednisone for asthma and my doctor things it has effected my stomach. I think knowing you are not alone can make things a little better. Thank goodness for these message boards.
Good luck.

I have been using Omeprazole 20mg 2x a day. I take one at 8am and another at 8pm. My reflux is worse at night too. I have heard of cases where doctors allow patients to take Omeprazole 40mg (max dose) once a day. Perhaps taking this at night could help? Ask your doctor. In so far as other medications, I am taking Sucralfate 4 times a day (every six hours). Though it is not a pain medication - it is like a liquid bandage for the stomach - it has helped reduce the pain in my stomach considerably.
I have found avoiding eating more than just a few bites at a time really reduces the feelings of discomfort and additional acid. Take your time eating - drastically reduce portions - but increase frequency to avoid losing weight.
Something else to consider, certain foods irritate more than others. If I have anything with nuts, potatoe, margarine, dairy, meat (all those things rich in protein) - I feel horrid. Granted it is a limited diet - but I'd rather take supplements - eat really basic foodstuffs than experience the pain and discomfort I had when this all started.
Also, avoid eating at night too. It's better to go to bed hungry than it is to go to bed with a throat full of acid and pain in the gut. Ya know?
I have a consultation with a gastro specialist tomorrow. Hopefully, with all my symptoms, current test results, etc they'll have an idea of what is going on with me. I can only hope this isn't going to be a life long thing. I have lost 10 lbs in the past 2 weeks.

Oh I so need to join this topic...count me in....since Nov I feel I have been in a deep depression over this. They first said I had LPR then they said I have vocal cord dysfunction. Most of my tests do not show signs of reflux but I am going for a monometry test in a couple weeks. I cannot stand it anymore. I try not to eat bad but almost everythng sets it off. I take Aciphex and honestly sometimes I think I feel worse on it. I also take enzymes and the Dr. just added carafate whcih I have not started yet that is like Sucralfate, he gave me liqid form so maybe it will help my esophagus.
I also take Klonopin for the anxiety since I cannot handle the breathing and lump in the throat feeling!
I avoid dairy and chocolate, i eat low fat but I still have a half a cup of coffee a day, i add coffe tamer to reduce the acid (that is my only vice).
I just have not found relief yet...I hope this test shows something.
Good luck everyone, it's good to know we're not alon!

Coffee and caffeine are big no no's - they'll mess your stomach up bad! when I was in the ER they warned me that caffeine makes it worse. I have since eliminated the caffeine in all forms. It is brutal!

Sounds like you eat a lot of junk food. Ice cream - milk - from my experience, dairy products will coat for a short time and dairy is a base against acid - but the milk sugar in the dairy (lactose) can create aggravation in the stomach and cause other problems.
Don't panic - don't be afraid - just remember - just like everything else that happens to us in life - "This too shall pass".

Hi Chickie99
I find eating the least possible gives me the least pain in my stomach and I find the worst time is during the night. The more I eat the worst and more symptoms I have. I find gingerale, toast and jello is the best diet for me but I do get hungry. I take a drink that has nutrients in it called propel. I have lost about 15 pounds in a month which is not a bad thing for me but not the right way to do it. I am on 80mg of omeprazole and 40mg of domperidone a day and gravol for the nausea and maalox which works a little if I do not eat much.
I am waiting to get a scope done but the appointment is not until April 4th just to see the specialist.
My family doctor is trying to get my appt. earlier because he is concerned about what is going on.
I hope things improve for you.

Thanks Karen. Wow! 80mg of omeprazole? I was told the max dosage is 40mg and after that anything higher can create more problems. I was desparate for relief and inquired all around about increasing my dosage and I got a big "NO" all the way around.
April 4 is a long way off to see a specialist - you should try to get in to see another local specialist and explain the severity of your condition and perhaps try calling every day to get in on a cancellation! That's what I did!! Just kept calling the gastro everyday until they got me in sooner!!
Consider imbalances and lack of nutrition and the other effects not eating or intaking balanced meals will have on your body. I've been going 2+ weeks now on just breadstuffs and water and I feel messed up.
Sometimes you have to fight and fight and push hard to get the correct attention you need - when you need it - not when there's an availble slot.
When I needed an ultrasound of my pancreas - the docs office scheduled me for 2 weeks out at the hospital. With the amount of misery I am sustaining - I went to the ER and explained that I am suffering and in great amounts of pain - my blood levels are elevated and I need an ultrasound asap.
Sure enough - that same day - I had my ultrasound!
So persistance works! You just have to stand your ground - cry - scream - be a pain in the butt - etc. It's your body, your health and nobody in the healthcare industry cares - they just want the insurance money. There are more patients than there are docs out there so look out for #1 and make yourself the number one priority!
That's my two cents on the topic.

Hi Chickee99
I was told that 80mg was the max. I was told to do that at emerg but I saw my dr today and he said if it's not working than go back to 40mg. a day.
My family dr e-mailed them to get an earlier appt but you are so right that you have to persist to get any action sometimes. This dr's office said they might be able to get me in in March so I will phone if I do not hear anything from them.
Thanks for your comments and take care of yourself.

i can't eat anything either... i've lost 10 lbs in the past 2 weeks. I am not overweight either. All i can eat is bread and drink water. i haven't been able to eat BBQ for years - all the sugar and processed crap in the sauce makes me ill just thinking about it. Beef is very difficult to digest from the get-go too. I grind my teeth and cannot chew my steak very well so I can't eat it too often and when I do - I can eat a few little bites and i'm done!
From what you are sharing with us - sounds like the types of foods you are able to consume are easy to chew or no chewing is required. Have you considered that you might be eating too fast or not chewing your food completely? When you don't chew your food enough, the initial enzyme in your saliva that begins the digestive process doesn't get into the food to begin breaking it down. Then your stomach has to work very hard to break it down. If you're getting chunks of food coming up into your throat - rather than squishy mush - this might be a hint that your eating too fast and/or not chewing enough and digestion is not beginning in your mouth like it should be.
Just a thought. Only you know.

you're not "screwed" - they can do alot for spasms - there's medications to relax the esophagus, or you could have a simple esophageal dilation procedure - depends what the manometry test shows. if your Les pressure is too high, they can stretch it - there's lots of solutions, but first you have to find out what the exact problem is. get it checked out, have the manometry, and tell us what they discover. honestly, I believe you're going to be fine - try to relax because stress never fixed anything.
