I have pain on my left and right sides at my bottom rib, mostly on the right side - radiating down to my right side to my abdomen - pain ranges from 1-5 (5 being worst) anywhere from a constant 2 to 4 at times. I wake with sore throats and usually have asthma problems the next day.

I don't have acid reflux or heartburn. I have heart pain on the left side, behind left breast bone. About 2 hours after I eat anything, doesn't matter what it is, I start hurting. Feels like heart pains. When I lay on my left side, they ease up. I had an endoscope done, and will be having a HIDA scan for the gallbladder. These pains feel just like heart pains, but I've been checked out by cardiologist. I'm trying Prilosec - I didn't like Prevacid.

You could Try keeping a food diary and see if your discomfort adds up to any patterns.

Chickie99 -- I read you article. So much sounds like me. Thanks. I don't have asthma, etc. But I did try Prevacid -- and then I switched to Prilosec, which is what I am trying now, as of 2 days ago. I can't tell if it is making it worse or better. I called the gastro doctor's office this morning. Told them again that I need something for the pain, or something to help ease the esophagus or something. Not sure if they will. I do have the HIDA scan coming up this Friday. Right now he has me on Nortryptyline, which is an anti-depressant, but it's supposed to be a pain killer too. I told his office I really believe it has just made me worse. I do have heart palps and take Atenolol (spel?) for heart palps. I was able to get of the heart medication, until I began taking the Nortrptyline. Now I'm back on the heart med too. I'll see what gastro doctor's office does today. Thanks for the notes.

Your doc is probably going to have to work with you through process of elimination and testing. It's not a quick fix but I wish you wellness.

over the past three days, I haven't been eating much. I feel really full after a 3-4 bites. whatever I try to eat doesn't seem to digest properly either. it just sits in my stomach like a rock all day and all night. i'm thinking its the medicine i'm taking, sucralfate (1 gm 4x day) and omeprazole (20mg 2x day) that is blocking absorption and digestion? (I've been on the omeprazole for 2 weeks now and have been taking the sucralfate for 4 days).

I haven't had a bm in 2 days too. I cannot figure out if its because i'm not eating much or its the meds? i'm going on 2+ weeks now being ill with horrible gastro pains and rancid acid reflux and waiting to see the gastro specialist tomorrow *thank god*!

So this evening I realized that my breathe is horrible - despite perfect oral hygiene. I thought to check my urine for ketones with some keto-stix i had from when I was doing the low carb diet. I would monitor my level of ketosis. Sure enough there is a considerable amount of ketones in my urine, despite my eating what I could today. Had half a bran muffin that I ate slowly over a 3 hr period this morning and an 3/4 of an egg bagel dry. Thankfully I did drink nearly 2 liters of water today too, to avoid getting dehydrated.

Has anyone experienced this while they were still intaking food with this condition?

Lately now I've been having fullness feelings on my left side below my breastbone. Like I feel bloated on that one side and it kinda goes into the middle of my stomach. Anybody else have this?

Nancy. I had to stop when I read your post. I have very similar symptoms. That weird burny feeling in my nose/throat I could never describe but I have that. I also have a general burn/tingle in my chest/upper ab/back area that feels almost like dry skin on the inside. Doc says I have non-acid reflux since Protonix seems to have taken care of the acid when I had the bravo ph probe test. What is your diagnosis? What are some things you have done to help. My doctor put me on Librax to see if that helped but it didnt at all. Not sure what the next step is...maybe alternative medicine??

i had that too - i had my endoscopy and it showed a sliding hiatal hernia. they got me on acid suppressing drugs. some herias require surgery. mine does not because its minor but its troublesome enough to cause a great deal of discomfort. my stomach was also getting strangled!

i've seen a chiropractor 2x already who has really helped me and got me out of discomfort. i can eat again, slowly but can get more than 2 bites down!

My diagnosis is GERD and Barretts Esopagus..I thought it was controlled with the 40 mg 2x a day of Nexium but it seems to have lost its ability to work.. I was taking magesium/zince/calcium and that also worked for a short time but now everyhting is back...so I am back to cutting things out.. coffee for example.. and hoping to get this under control again.
Interesting you have non-acid reflux.. and I am wondering about that... and wondering how it differs from acid reflux.. let me know if you hit on a medicine or life change that works.

My pain is in the middle lower chest area...between my breasts.
And spreads out to my whole chest area. Burns like heck !
And it explodes with pain up my throat. It can also even hurt my breasts.
The pain is very uncomfortable and takes me almost to the point of tears.
I have been using the prescription drug Cimetidine, for over a year, but lately
I really don't think it's working anymore. I have never had the test when they put a scope down your throat, although the doctor mentioned it once
or twice, but I declined. I heard that the test is painful and makes you
sick to your stomach.

Try some over the counter Galviscon! I had the same symptoms as you a few days ago. A smart pharmacist said if you have acid and you have pain and a heart condition has already been ruled out - obviously the acid is eating your stomach lining!! So Galviscon coats and protects your stomach lining and stops the pain. I was using prescription strength called Carafate. It however has a nasty side effect of functional dyspepsia which is not a fun ride - but it is strong and stops the pain.

With regards to the scope test - (endoscopy), I had it done a week ago. May I suggest you request conscious sedation where they don't knock you out completely but you are sedated. It doesn't mess you up and you don't feel a thing. It's not painful per say, but the puff of air they blow into your mouth to expand your inner piping sorta speak can give you some gas afterwards. That's the extent of it.

My fiance' had the endoscopy test done a few months ago too and he can't even remember the entire day. It's a blur to him. So don't panic or worry - just keep in mind that they need to do the endoscopy to look at why you are hurting. You don't want to keep hurting any more, right?

The test is quick (7 minutes) and when they're doing it you're out cold! When they're all done you wake up and think, (did they do it?!) - really!

Just think of it this way too - at least you'll have closure and answers to why you're not feeling good too.

Maybe your doc can give you something for anxiety to calm you days before the test too. Keeping your mind from going crazy with ideas of "what if" will just make your stomach hurt more - stress = more acid!

Feel better and don't worry. You will be alright! Those docs do 1000's of endoscopies - they're pro's!

I have it exactly at the base of the rib cage right smack dap in the center of the chest. Lived with it for a while until I couldnt take it anymore and went to see the Doc. Then I figured it was time to get it checked out. I have never been knocked out before in my life (48 years old) so I wasnt looking forward to getting scoped. It actualy was a very pleasant experiance. Once the Doc injected the drugs into the IV the next thing I remembered was 45 minutes later waking up. I didnt feel or hear anything during the procedure and it put to rest anything that could have been really bad! I have GERD.

The stomach has a sphincter at the top of the opening. If the sphincter at the top of the stomach doesnt close all the way, when you lay sideways or go to sleep the acid in the stomach makes its way up to the esophagus and the stomach acid burns it. The Doc recommended Prilosec OTC. Take 1 tablet every morning and in a few days the symptoms went away. I took it for about a month and then went off it for many months only to have the GERD return again. So it looks like I am back on it and will probably stay on it forever.

My pain is right in the center of my throat, sometimes in between my shoulder blades, often right under my breast bone. I always have the taste of vomit in my mouth and can smell it in my nose. My nose burns and it makes me sneeze a lot which in turn sends more stomach juice up into my throat and mouth which stings really bad. I keep having asthma-like coughing fits and recuring sinus infections with pink eye. Anyone else get the pinkeye?

definitely chest-like. It is acid though. If I wasn't 28, the pain is such that I would think I was having a hear attack.
