View Full Version : Chromium Picolinate dangerous?

I've been taking 500 mcg. of chromium picolinate for a yr. or so and am wondering if this form is safe. I've read that it isn't a safe form and it can cause liver problems. I had my annual bloodwork done recently and one of my 4 liver enzymes was elevated. I'm wondering if it's from the chromium?? My Dr. said I'll need an ultrasound of my liver if the enzyme level is still raised on my next blood test. I sure don't want to go through that for nothing. It could also be caused from my cholesterol med. which is Vytorin. Has this happened to anyone else?

I take simvastatin which is one component of Vytorin. I have not personally had any liver enzyme observances, but I am aware that these medications target the liver.

I am sorry that I have no knowledge of chromium picolinate or its side effects. I did find a reported case of liver toxicity when chromium picolinate was ingested at 6-12 times the recommended dosage.

Thanks for your reply. I hope you won't have any problems with your cholesterol med. Sue

My PCP's diabetic counselor recommended that I take it. I don't remember the dosage she told me to take as it was low and all I could find was 200mg. which I have been taking once a day. won't know how it affected anything until April when I am due for blood work.
