View Full Version : Wellbutrin for Obsessive Thoughts?

I have some questions about medication, OCD and anxiety...

A few weeks ago my primary care doc put me on Wellbutrin for anxiety with an element of depression. I started researching anxiety and discovered this forum--and ended up reading about OCD.

Though I didn't realize it when I spoke with my doctor, I think a big part of the problems and anxiety I've been having fall under this category.

In particular, I tend to have runaway thoughts that I just can't control. I will think of something (usually a minor social gaffe or relationship problem) and just chew on it over and over to the point where it blocks out everything else and inside my head I am absolutely freaking out. Is this ruminating?

I have always done this, but had a few very intense episodes since I started taking the Wellbutrin. I have heard that Wellbutrin can cause anxiety but that it usually does away after a few weeks.

Sorry to ramble. I guess what I really want to ask is whether Wellbutrin is ever used for this kind of thing and whether I might consider taking something else.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

It may help to some extent, but usually the only real way to attack OCD is with a combination of drugs and cognitive behavioral therapy and/or meditation. You will probably feel some symptomatic relief when you find the correct drug, but it probably won't free you from the disease.

It does sound to me like you may have a mild case of Pure OCD, but you need to see a specialist to be sure. I wouldn't take a GP's advice on anxiety ever! You need to find a specialist and a therapist preferibly who works with your psychiatrist.

Good luck,
OE

Thanks for the reply and the advice. I do appreciate it.

I just got off the phone w/my insurance co to find out about my coverage for mental health issues and there's a $1K deductible and then only 50% covered. That makes me mad. Oh well, I suppose I should just be glad I have insurance at all.

And regardless, I know I need to see someone, so off I go to find a therapist who does cognitive behavioral work...

Good for you! I think it will help you if you find a therapist that you connect with. Let us know how it goes.

Later,
