Do you ever find that your teeth hurt in the morning after using a soft mouthguard?
I just got my second soft mouthguard last month, the right side of the guard feels tight on my teeth and my teeth can somtimes hurt in the morning. The left side of the guard feels fine, so much so that you can hardly feel it in your mouth. The teeth pain isn't realy bad, I mean it's nothing compared to the jaw pain but I was just wondering if anyone elses teeth hurt....

They probably hurt b/c the guard isn't fitting correctly - its exerting too much force on the teeth where there is a snug fit. Have you mentioned it to your dr - he could adjust it. Obviously the whole idea is to stop pain - any pain - so it should not be causing add'l stress on the teeth. Be careful - if it does not fit correctly and exerts enough pressure, over time your teeth may shift as a result - so tell your dr about it at your next appt, Ok?

Yes mine do ,Ive had my soft lower bite guard since august now and my symptoms are no wear near as bad as at the start but my Caine teeth both hurt I'm just presuming that I'm biting on my guard in my sleep and this is why they are aching my routine is clean my teeth with toothpaste then clean my guard then run it under the hot water as this makes it a bit softer to put in
Any dentists looking in ?why do they all come in clear plastic its bad enough going to bed looking like that please at least can i have a nice pink one to match my PJ,s lol
another question i know this is yuk but even though i am always cleaning my guard the smell always makes me a bit sick when i first put it in any tips would be appreciated , my dentist told me to soak it in white vinegar and then give it a good wash as i said its bad enough having to wear one i don't want to be stinking of vinegar as well lol

No I haven't mentioned it to my dentist yet, some day's it doesn't hurt and other day's it does a bit. Yeah it does feel like a snug fit on the right side of the guard. I have had the mouthguard for well over a month now because I didn't start using it straight away, I don't want to pay more money out to have the guard adjusted! I don't see how the guard can't fit right, I mean the dentist just takes an impression of your teeth with plaster so it must fit the same everytime right? Although having said that I don't remermber my first mouthguard being a snug fit. Also the dentist I see now does seem a bit of an idiot, he spent ages on me doing a small filling. He also had to do a dental impression for a mouthguard for me four times.lol I only started seeing him because I got an appointment with him the quickest, now I know why.lol
Also the guard hasn't helped at all yet with my tmj pain, so I am now thinking more then ever that my pain and trigger point is down to my nasal obstruction. Hopefully I will be having that operation soon, I'm on the waiting list. I'm getting really bad head pain as well now, either my head hurts or my jaw hurts, always one or the other but not usually at the same time. And I always have that weird pressure feeling up my nostril.

Hot water? I didn't think you was meant to use hot water on mouthguards because it can change the shape of it.
To clean it I just use cold water and some soap that I squeeze out of a plastic bottle. I use my fingers to clean it, no tooth brush. I let it dry naturally in the box with a few drops of water. So far it doesn't smell at all!
My first mouthguard use to smell and started to turn yellow after a while but I cleaned that one differently, so it seems I am cleaning the new one better!

You know I have lost count of all the different impressions I have had made but what I find most interesting is how they all come out so different than each other. Some have actually felt like they were pushng my jaw or face this way or another - some have had too much bulk others have had not enough. Although a lot has to do with the mold the dentist chooses to use (the size and shape) and the lab making the prosthetic, sometimes it is due to the technical instructions the dentist provides the lab has well. There's a part of me that wishes I could do it myself. I have a wierd feeling in one of my nostrils too - but I had a deviated septum corrected many years ago. I thought maybe the pain was due to cranial bones that moved due to the jaw dysfunction. I hope your surgery is the answer.
Mash Potato (I luv your name - its all I eat lately, too)
I would think dipping it in mouth wash before you put it in may help but you have to use one that does not contain alcohol so it doesn't dry it out. How about just dabbing a little bit of your favorite toothpaste on your tongue just before you put it in?
You made me laugh about colored guards - I recently was wearing something made to just relax my facial muscles and it had purple acryliic where the front teeth are - I looked like a kid who just had a grape flavored lollipop when I smiled. When my 2 yr old grand niece saw it she practically stuck her face in my mouth to get a better view!

How do you have a mouthguard adjusted anyway? Do you mean that you have to have a whole new mouthguard made?

Yeah I know, I remember you saying about it before. I also had my septum corrected a few years ago and I now have to have it done again. The ENT doc even asked me how my nose got busted again but I don't know do I. I was told by another ENT doc that my nose has gone wrong again because of allergies, all these docs say different things though, they are not consistent.

I've never had a soft mouthguard. The hard ones are adjusted by tapping on the blue articulating paper and then they grind on it in the areas that seem to be hitting or rubbing.
Are the soft bite guards better and more comfortable then the hard plastic ones? I've been tempted to get one of the new over the counter dental guards in the store.

Hard ones are the best. I have an upper splint that I wear 24/7 and it helps with my pain alot.

I have never had a hard mouthguard.
So can someone tell me that it's also possible to adjust a soft mouthguard? Or can you only adjust hard mouthguards?

The upper splint is better for talking.

I only wear my splint at night. I used to have a hard time during the day controling the clenching, but have now just about got it under control. If I feel myself start to clench, I put my tongue between my front teeth.

Hello All
Thanks for the tips on making my guard taste a bit better ,my soft lower guard was adjusted after 3 weeks of wear he inspected it and showed me were i was biting in my sleep he then put some paper that stained over my guard asked me to bite down then he filled away at the area that i bite on with one of his instruments .
He told me that he wears a hard one on his upper teeth as he himself is a grinder , but at the moment I'm still on a soft lower guard
I searched pictures of mouth guards and couldn't believe how many different types there are !!!!!
Have a good day everyone take care
