Last week i did some routine blood test and my dr said i have slightly high TSH values. I have to to further thyroid tests next week but i wanted to know if there s any relation between TSh and fertility. I only spoke to the Dr on the phone and haven t yet told him i m TCC.
Any feedback appreciated

I have an underactive thyroid. My cousin does too. She found out she had a problem because with her last baby (shes 2 now) her milk dried up. They ran tests and it was her thyroid. She is 30 weeks pregnant with her second right now. So to answer you question, I think as long as you are on medication it shouldn't cause any problems.

this was the 1st time i was tested and my dr wants to have more tests before sending me to a specialist or giving me any treatment especially since its not alarmingly high. Thanks for your help.

Hey there. I just wanted to tell you that I have underactive thyroid and I am on meds. My doc told me that as long as I am medicated...I am fine. Good luck with tests.

Hi Amy.
I have Graves disease (hyperthroidism) which I was just diagnosed with after getting tested for infertility. I am currently on medicine which brought my levels to the normal range and my endocrinologist told me there is no reason for me to wait getting pregnant.
It is great your Dr. is following up with more tests and your thyroid can definitely have an impact on getting pregnant. If my thyroid was not controlled I would most likely miscarry I was told.
From what you write it sounds like you are the opposite (hypo) as your TSH is elevated (mine was practically non-existent less than 0.01). Just follow with what your Dr. tells you and the additional tests should provide you with more information.
Good luck.

Thanks Jobeth.
I have to go to an endocrinologist on tue. I am not so keen on having another problem apart from TTC and a sticky blood prob. On the other hand its better that i identified the problem now(at 4 mnths of TCC) than after a year TTC. My dr also said that it might have been the cause of my m/c last summer. This makes me angry because i feel that maybe i could have prevented it. IF only i knew!!!!
If i remember correctly you had to have your tubes removed .How s it going ? Did you have them removed? Are you going for IVF?
Thanks for your support. Hope all works out fine with you.

I am not TTC, but have hypothyroidism and having been doing ALOT of research lately. I've read, from more than one source, that having hypothyroidism can cause infertility and/or miscarriage. I just popped in this forum to see if anyone here has made the connection. I was just recently diagnosed and have 2 children (10 & 7) but did have a miscarriage as well. Not sure about the validity or the connection, but I would definitely look into getting some thryoid meds to give yourself the best optimal chance of having a healthy pregnancy. Also, what is your TSN? The **** has changed what the 'normal' range is lately and some docs don't recognize this so you may be more out of range than you think. (The new range is .3 to 3.0 and old range was .5 to 5.5.) My TSH was only 7.1 but I was VERY, VERY ill!!!!
Also, one book I read stated that it used to be standard practice for fertility clinics to prescribe thyroid meds to patients TTC, without even testing them.

In November I became very ill. Could not eat and when I did force something down I always had terrible indigestion. Could not sleep (and that means not AT ALL some nights). Tingling in my left arm. Mild pain in my lower right abdomen. Very dizzy and very anxious. Very high BP. They sent me to get an abdominal CT to see if I had issues with my gallbladder and that night I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. The next day they called to tell me I was hypothyroid and to start on Synthroid. I did START to feel a BIT better a few days later and most the dizziness was gone in a few weeks. Then I was starting to feel even better by December and January (still not 100% though) then the beginning of February I screwed up my meds and accidently took 50 mcgs instead of 75 mcgs for 7-10 days. Wound up at the ER again thinking I was having a stroke (double vision with severe tingling in left arm and leg). Since I have been back on my usual dose of meds I am slowly feeling better, but still a long, long way from normal yet. I still have issues focusing my eyes sometimes and get tingles in arms and legs. Insomnia has been better but still have some bad nights.
I'm only 38 and know that I should be feeling some aches and pains for my age but I definitley feel like this issue has aged me way beyond my years. I am hoping as my body gets used to having proper amounts of thryoid meds that I will just start to feel better and better. That is why I urge anyone whose levels might be borderline to start treatment NOW before you get as sick as I was. Especially anyone trying to have a baby! Good Luck!

Wow you ve through quite a tough patch.
I don t have any of those symptoms Sometimes i get cold hands and feet and feel slightly dizzy. I also have a dry throat which has been so for the past 2 months. I put on 2 kilos and do feel tired.I thought that this was stress due to TTC. But i might be in early stages so i ll definitely check it out.
Thanks for the info.
At the thyroid board i ve read that meds take quite a while to work so i hope things will settle down soon for you.

Hi Amy.
I know what you mean about finding out problems after you have been ttc. First I found out about my tubes and then the grave's, so it was a double whammy for me. But after beeing on meds for a couple of months my levels are normal. We were ttc for over a year.
My Mom also has Hashimotos (hypo) and I consider myself lucky as I do not have any symptoms, but I have seen my Mom struggle with hers, but once she got the correct type/dose of medicine she feels like a new woman.
My surgery to remove my tubes is Mar. 16th and I will then be able to start IVF after that. I am nervous about the surgery as it seems so final but excited to start IVF. Thanks for asking too!
Good luck and let me know how everything works out for you.

Hi jobeth
Got my appt today but probably they ll need to run more tests before i really know what s going on. Thanks for your support.
Best of luck for the op on the 16th . Is it done as a laperoscopy? And if you don t mind me asking why do they have to remove your blocked tubes before IVF? Don t they immediately implant the fertilised egg in the uterus ?
I admire you spirit . .. . . looking forward to get things done with so you can start IVF. . .. keep it up.
Take care

Hi Amy.
I am getting a lap and we have decided to remove my tubes since they are both large hydros which they say can interfere with the implantation of the embryo due to the fluid that is built up in the tubes which can possibly leak out. I researched my situation quite a bit and got a couple of opinions from RE's before making this decision.
I could have tried to unblock the tubes or left them in but the success rates are much lower with those scenarios. I am also 35 so my age also played into this as well, plus the fact that emotionally/physically I did not want to try different methods before realizing I should have just removed them to begin with. I guess I am taking the most aggressive approach and hoepfully good results will come from this.
Good luck with your tests. I'm sure they will do a full thyroid panel to better understand what is going on. Let me know how it goes.

I have an underactive thyroid and am now on meds to keep it in the normal range. I had 2 miscarriages before going on meds and my dr said that an underactive th can certainly cause probs conceiving but MOSTLY probs with miscarriages.
Best wishes to you.

Well the endo said most probably i am hypo but she needs to do more tests. These will be done in about 15days time since she wants them done on CD10. She s also going to do a hormone profile so that if there are any other probs we can identify them now. I felt so sad when she told me that most probably my m/c was a result of my thyroid problem. But well there s nothing much i can do now.
Ok i can understand the tube removal now i think you are taking the correct decision. I still need to learn so much more about the subject. Things must not be that easy on you but i admire your positive spirit . Keep it up and take care.
Thanks for your support.
Mariella.
Thanks for the info. Did you have your m/cs after your 3 children? Just curious if you developed the thyroid problem after you conceived.
Good luck with TTC no 4.

Hi Amy my thyroid prob was discovered sev yrs ago during routine blood tests, maybe around the time of my 2nd baby. I have obviously always had an issue there, but we only decided to look further into it since I am having trouble conceiving. It was in the abnormal range, so I am on meds and it is normal now. I had my miscarriages BEFORE I started on the medication, so who knows, it could have been a contributing factor, I will never know, but I started the meds last August and I am still not pg after 7 months. But the issue I had was that I got pg 2 cycles in a row and they didn't take and I lost them so that was the strange thing.
Best wishes to you.
Best wishes to you.

Hi Amy.
The surery went well (was home that same day) and I am home recuperating, still a little sore but feeling better each day. My Dr. told me I made the right decision as both my tubes were so dilated and damaged she would not have been able to unblock them had we gone down that path. It was such a relief to hear.
She also said I could start the birth control pills for IVF so I was glad to hear that as well. One of the women I work with also just did her 1st IVF with my Dr. and she is pregnant! I am so excited for her and anxious to start myself.
How is everything going with you? Did you get your results back yet?

Hi Jobeth:wave:
really glad it all went well. Its great that you re even more convinced that you did the right decision.
Its also brilliant that you re excited to start IVF. try not to be anxious. . .i think a positive and optimistic approach helps in this TTC process.
Why is it that you have to take birth control pills? I ve never really understood this.
I got my results and i was diagnosed with hypothyroid. . . . i am dealing with it ok. A little upset that i won t be able to TTC until i balance out the dose i need to take. Had hoped for a 2007 baby but i know this is the best thing for me and the health of my (hopefully) future little one.
I am glad you re doing ok. I don t know if you ever posted or visited the infertility boards. .. there are some wonderful women who would be able to help you so much through your IVF cycles. I would reccomend you take a look.
Looking forward to know what s your next step.Praying that you d get your BFP on 1st attempt.
Take care

Yes started taking meds last sat 50mcg levothyroxine sodium. Had TSH of 7.5 so quite high . will have to do blood works again in 6 weeks time to see if i need to increase my dose.
What is your dose? WHat treatment do you take? Do you have any side effects from the meds?
Did your friends conceive after or before being diagnosed?
Sorry for all the questions .. . its just great to know i am doing things as i am supposed to. my dr wasn t too nice . .. ..

Hi...so I am on the same meds, with the same dosage. I don't really have any noticable side effects...and trust me I am ultra sensitive to my body, just from ttc for so long. My friends were on meds when they concieved. My doctor said that I will have to stay on the meds even when I get prego, and said that htey weren't harmful at all. I am sorry you had such a crabby doc. It took me a while to get over the idea...but my fertility specialist told me that since I am on my meds, its like I dont have a thyroid issue at all because it is replacing the horomone, like nothing ever happened. I feel like it is an answer to some of my questions regarding ttc. Are you going on clomid?

Thanks you reply has made me feel so much better . The people on the thyroid board are so helpful. But sometimes i try to folloew their posts to learn more about the condition and i hear about so many who feel really sick and it kind of scares me.
I had been TTC for about 6 months before getting diagnosed . Do you think i should consider discussing clomid with my dr? Nobody mentioned it to me as yet. In what circumstances is this normally given?
Thanks once again. You really helped with your positive insight.

Hey Amy...I am sorry I thought I read somewhere earlier that u were considering clomid. I don't know much about it, except it helps with ovulation. I must have been being scatterbrained. Sorry. Its nice to have people to relate to, huh? I feel glad to have found you.

Hi there
Read on the inf board you re going to do a post coital test . Sorry i don t know much about these tests. Is it the one where they check how long the spermies live inside you? When are you getting it done? I ll be praying for you.
I am actually already feeling a bit better . . . .i don t think its actually the meds i think its because i know what s going on. The fact that you and the people on the thyroid board assured me that what i am feeling is normal really helped.
Still find it a bit difficult to relate with my family though. Luckily nobody in my family ever had any health problems(hope and pray they never will) so i feel they don t understand a thing about me. Apart from the thyroid thing i have a sticky blood problem - essential thrombocytosis - for which i need to take a mild form of chemo to control. I had stopped them due to TTC though started them again now. when i stop and start them again i get a few side effects especially nausea and fatigue. However my family expect me to be always available for anything they need .. . .don t get me wrong i love helping out and love them to death. But the fact that i don t have kids makes them think i am sitting pretty all day waiting for their calls. Mind you i work full time and part time. And if i can t babysit for them or do some errand coz i am not feeling well or have work i feel soooo guilty. Sorry moaning too much here.
Tell me more about you. Do you work? I see that you ve been married since 05 i married in 05 too JUly actually. Both Dh and i are 27. You re still young at 25 so dont ever give up eh. Do you temp? I started doing it lately and it s great knowing what s going on.
Thank you so much for your support
