I haven't written in a very long time. I don't know if any of you remember, but I had muscle pains, chest pains, lower back pains, headaches, and many other FM symptoms for decades. About 13 year ago I had my dental amalgams removed, and followed a good healthy diet. Getting rid of those amalgams was a life-saver, for there were times I didn't want to go on for another day. Previously, there were times I had trouble walking and then after the amalgam removal, I was running almost 20 miles weekly. Life had been pretty good for about 10 years or so.
Then last year about 13 months ago, my right arm started hurting so bad. It hurt so bad, that I couldn't even use it, but I continued running. And when anyone shook my hand, I had excrutiating pain. Then my lower back hurt so much, that I couldn't bend down easily. My running came to a stop in the summer six months later, as I hurt so much.
I went to the doctors, and she said that I had arthritis, and prescribed orthodox pain killers. Since I have followed natural health care for so many years, I didn't want to believe it. So, I started changing my diet again to less acidic foods, started using natural herbal deordorant, drank green tea, and now eat one clove of fresh raw garlic every day.
Slowly, my muscle pains went away. I'm back to running nearly 20 miles a week, and lifting weights. My lower back pain is gone. It took about 5 months for this to naturally go away.
I don't know all the reasons for this, but I theorize that a lot of fibromyalgia is caused by toxins, poor diet, and unnecessary stress and other poor lifestyles. I haven't figured out which of my changes, made the most significant difference, but I think the garlic this time was a major contributor. I write more about this, if you want. I'll tell you why raw garlic is so important.
I was so oooold last summer, couldn't hardly walk...kind of depressed...but with God's help I'm back. :) I hope that I'm encouraging to all of you. There's more out there then these doctors understand.

Which I could find that kind of help! What is dental amalgrams? I am not sure if I have fibro or not but it seems that alot of my symthoms are the same as those with fibro. I can not afford the go the the doctor to find out, do you think if I started eating garlic, it would help? Thanks, CR

Hi CR,
If you are strapped for cash or have poor to nonexistent medical insurance, I recommend you visit your local public library to see if they have one or more books by Jacob Teitelbaum, MD. The titles are: From Fatigued to Fantastic and Pain Free 1 - 2 - 3.
If your local library doesn't own the books, they will likely be able to get them for you from another library, for free or very low cost (like one or 2 dollars). Most public libraries in Oregon participate in a program called Interlibrary loan. If all this is too much info for you, just ask for the books at the library's reference/information desk & they will be able to help you.
The main reason why I like Dr. Teitelbaum's books is because the information there has been extremely helpful to me personally, in reducing my pain level, and also in increasing my energy levels. There are hundreds of treatments described in each book (with some overlap) -- conventional drugs, alternative treatments, and self-help stuff. Each treatment is described in terms of helpfulness & side effects, followed by Dr. T.'s personal opinion. Another thing I like is that Teitelbaum isn't just a one-fix-fits-all doctor, like some other people who write on fibro & CFS. And this is appropriate, because research increasingly shows that there are a variety of causes for fibro/ chronic fatigue.
Dr. T. himself was a chronic fatigue sufferer -- one of us. He understands our pain in a very personal way. As an internal med doc, he specializes in treatment of fibro & CFS. He also runs research studies on treatments for fibro. Recently, he has signed on as medical director of Fibro & Fatigue Treatment Centers. In Oregon, a new FF center just opened in Beaverton. IMO, specialized treatment might be a better option than trying to get somewhere with the docs in Umatilla, where there are few if any fibro specialists. Maybe something to save up for while you try a few self-help things.
Dr. Teitelbaum is giving a free lecture in downtown Portland on March 13. He will also be in Seattle on the same tour. This is a great opportunity, as he is based on the East Coast & doesn't often make it to the West. I realize that Portland is a ways from Umatilla, but it might be worth your while to consider attending.
Best wishes.
PS. Garlic is helpful to people in a number of ways. It has antiviral properties. It stimulates the immune system. It contains a lot of sulfur (as do onions), which helps with enzymes & detoxification. But, in some people raw garlic can cause upset stomach. You can use it in cooking, for some benefit & maybe a little less stomach irritation. In people with a lot of toxin exposure, whether due to chemicals or to dental fillings (silver amalgams), taking a lot of garlic at once can make you feel pretty ugly, as the bad stuff starts to move around & hopefully out of the body. So ... easy does it, start slow.
Epsom salts baths can provide temporary pain reduction in muscles, and are also very relaxing -- good before bed. One cup of salts in a tub of warm water, soak 20 min. Last I checked, I could get Epsom for about $1.50 at Walmart -- 3 pound bag good for at least 6 baths. The salts provide a small amt of magnesium, which is often deficient in fibro sufferers.

My whole life, all that doctors would give me was "dumb" looks. You would tell them your symptoms, they would stare...it's like they just didn't know. This is a typical response I later found out of a lot of doctors for people that have FM or similar conditions. I was told to not run more than 100 yards, I was too old, and I was too fat in 1978. The doctor said it just like that...not overweight...but fat.
To make a long story short, I experimented with changing my diet, taking herbs, and finally when my tooth broke and exposed a dental amalgam...and my pains got worse...I decided on my own to have them removed. Doctors have always failed for me. Even my last one, who is really nice and knowledgeable...just thinks it's arthritis. Would they believe that I'm well again? No, I just get those same kind of looks.
Before the internet, I would read and read about so many things. I did not want to live that way, so I explored natural healing. One of my anti-mercury experiments made me extremely sick, but most of my experiments were successful.
I only take small amounts of raw garlic, and it's important to mix it with other foods. It has these remarkable properties:
1) Anti-inflammatory
2) Antibiotic
3) Removes mercury and other toxins
4) Lowers blood pressure some
I'll let you read more about this, as there's mountains of information about raw garlic and it's medicinal properties. Will they tell you about this at the doctor's office? I only learn these things on my own. And with the internet, we now have access to much more information. We can make changes to get well.
Like I've said many times, changing to a healthy lifestyle for you may not work as it did for me, but it certainly won't hurt. Eat better, avoid processed foods, remove toxins and excess stress from your life. Be patient with natural healing and read a lot about it. For what choice do we have? I chose to not be sick.
You all can read about dental amalgams with the mercury that leaks and accumulates in the body. It's controversal with both anti and pro positions. I can't understand why anyone would believe for a minute to think that mercury is safe in our teeth, inches from our brain. I don't care what anyone says, I know for me that they were not safe. My headaches, after those mercury amalgams were removed, have never come back.
I hope that helps everyone. :)

The questions in some of your minds, might be...how was I able to accomplish all of that? What drove me to go outside of traditional medical care?
It's quite simple. They fail for so many of us, because they only follow their standard practices. Very few recommend natural care...or understand nutrition...or understand toxins like mercury...and the affect they have on our bodies and so forth.
For those that have Faith, what I will say will mean a lot, and for those that do not, you might wonder in awe. It's my constant faith in God, our creator, who guided me through with prayer. Prayer is always there in my life, and it can move mountains for those that believe.
I know there will be other challenges as I get older, and they will be harder and harder on us that become elderly. But we can try, we can rely on that inner strength that some of you understand.

Hi Rhody,
Could you explain in more detail about your amalgam fillings and how you found out they were releasing "toxins"? Is there proof?
Did you have any amalgam showing in your mouth beforehand and how many teeth were filled? Also, what was done about the fillings - were the teeth refilled with a "non-toxic" filling or removed?
I have a lot of amalgam in my mouth and certainly with me there are a few things that need explaining health-wise. I am a jogger (daily, of sorts) and therefore very interested in your connection between running distances/or hardly being able to walk, and the amalgams. If amalgams affect running they are bound to affect many other activities too.
Why is it, do you think, that the effect you describe of amalgam on our physical health, has not been recognised and well-researched by now?
If you are onto something it should be pretty easy to prove - by that I mean ppl with amalgams are easy to find and to separate out as a group. Even I could research that sort of data.
Cheers and thanks - I'll read some more about it.

Hi Beefsteak,
Is mercury harmful to humans? Not much argument there; scientists worldwide have been unanimous for decades, that mercury is bad for humans & most other life forms.
Silver amalgam fillings are typically 50% mercury. It is well-known, even in the dental community, that amalgams de-gas slowly over time. Chewing & drinking/eating hot foods increases the rate of Hg release. We're talking mcg per day for the average person -- which of course varies with number & location of fillings.
There is controversy among scientists about the harmfulness of this leakage. For a long time, it was assumed that the body was capable of dealing with minute amts of heavy metals. But we now know that the body processes that deal with toxins -- glutathione & selenium based enzymes, & metalloproteins in the gut, have a range of expression in the general population. Some bodies are better able than others to cope with toxins & heavy metals. There are genetic variables, as well as nutrient / dietary / lifestyle / environmental factors that also contribute. So, the mercury does leak; how a given individual copes with it ... that's a question.
For an outdoor runner, there are sources of airborne mercury & other pollutants that the body has to deal with, as well as the increased burden of oxidative stress from the running itself. Not that running is bad -- no one is immune from pollutant exposure and oxidative stress.
There have been a few studies demonstrating impaired detoxification pathways in a subset of people with fibro. And, there have been case reports of some people with fibro improving after chelation of heavy metals. There has been some research, fairly recent, suggesting that fibro sufferers suffer greater than average oxidative stress loads.
So ... why aren't amalgam fillings recognized as harmful? There are sociopolitical issues & powers at work. Clinical practice in both medicine & dentistry moves slowly. Research may filter in, if economic factors for making the change are favorable to the profession.
Rstarre, blood tests for mercury can be done, but they are most accurate for acute exposure to Hg.
Mercury binds readily to body tissues, & mercury from dental amalgam seems to have an affinity for nervous tissue, like the brain & nerves. Chronic low level mercury exposure tends to predispose more to the tissue-bound scenario than to the acutely high blood level scenario.
T detect bound mercury, a challenge test is done. A chemical is given to mobilize mercury from body tissues. Pre & post challenge urine samples are compared for mercury content. If higher post-challenge, mercury toxicity is usually diagnosed.
But there is disagreement of the safety of doing challenge tests when people have a mouthful of amalgam, as it is possible that some of the amalgam mercury may be mobilized, not excreted, & then rebound elsewhere in the body.
Best wishes.

Ok then isn't drilling out all the mercury fillings going to make you ingest that much more mercury into the body tissue. Sort of like Asbetos in the house. Once you start ripping it apart, it is much more harmful than if you would have left it alone.

Thanks elmhar and rstarre for the useful replies.
I have a "huge" amount of amalgam fillings so if anyone is going to suffer toxicity effects it's likely to be me, however I don't suffer from fibromyalgia, but I do have gout and heart disease. My main problem is increasing my exercise tolerance - due to the strong chest discomfort I experience while jogging.
From what I've read so far mercury poisioning has not been proven to be prevalent in the population (in those with amalgam fillings). Also the body seems to be able to rid itself of low levels of mercury. The recent child surveys were clear - so there is no major effect in that age range it seems (and that was with many teeth filled in each mouth). I can't see why dentists would push amalgam fillings ahead of composite since amalgam lasts much longer.
Still its early days, and I'm new to this topic. Thanks again for your inputs.

You've raised a good point. While it's dangerous to remove asbestos, there are certified asbestos removers who make preparations, use special equipment, take precautions, & have a "safe technique."
There are dentists who specialize in amalgam removal in ways that minimize mercury ingestion during the work. They are called "biological dentists," and they are NOT common. BDs use specialized equipment & typically have certain recommendations for things to do, pre & post procedure, to bind as much Hg as possible.
Biological dentists for amalgam removal would be like certified asbestos removers for asbestos removal.
But your point is taken: the daily amt of mercury leakage is MUCH less than the mercury a person would be exposed to with typical dental technique. However, once the amalgams are replaced, the body can concentrate its efforts in dealing with tissue-bound mercury, rather than the day-to-day leakage from the amalgams.
Rhody's experience of improvement following amalgam removal, has been reported by many other fibro & chronic pain sufferers. However, not every person who has the amalgams removed has a guaranteed result. There is considerable variation.
HTH.

Rhody, you are VERY fortunate that you fibro has improved!
I suffer from fibro/chronic fatigue and am willing to try almost anything to try try and lessen the pain and fatigue. I am now being treated by a pain doctor and the meds I take help to take the edge off otherwise I would have trouble functioning.
2 years ago, my doctor ran tons of blood tests, infact the nurse at the hospital mentioned that she had never had to take so many vials of blood. She tested me for everything including heavy metals. My results were elevated levels of Epstein Bar Virus and one other virus. My mercury levels came back very low but after doing alot of research, I decided to have all of my amalgam fillings replaced. My dentist replaced all 14 of them. Yes, I had tons from when I was a kid. It is a pretty expensive procedure but I was willing to try anything to eleviate the pain. It's been 2 years now and no difference. So for me it did not work. :(
However, this does not mean that it might now help others. This was just my experience.

Mystic,
I'm wondering, did you use a biologic dentist who specializes in mercury abatement during amalagam replacement? Most of us just use our regular dentists, and that has it's drawbacks ...
Also, I'm wondering, since you had elevated viral titers, did your doc treat you with anti-virals? There's some recent research that has shown excellent results for fibro/CFS sufferers in your subgroup (++viral titers) when treated w/antivirals.
Best wishes.

Congrats on still feeling well using natural methods.
I, too, use these types of alternate "healing' techniques and watch what I eat. Some of my biggest triggers is.... beef! I've found that EVERY time I eat beef, I flare.
I, also, removed my silver fillings... and take a multitude of vitamins and other supplements to help. I'm not taking any pain meds - my leg spasms have stopped - and I sleep at night. to me, even this far has been a miracle.
I take melatonin to help me sleep nightly, flax seed oil to help my hair from falling out, ginko biablo and st. johns wart for those memory fogs, b-12 and magnesium for my leg cramps... it all depends on what is bothering you... and what you find works for you. I'm not so radical as to remove all dairy/meat/flour from my diet - but I HAVE heard of it helping.
Thank you for sharing your triumph and here's to hoping it continues.
-Cindy

I'm not so radical as to remove all dairy/meat/flour from my diet - but I HAVE heard of it helping.
Thank you for sharing your triumph and here's to hoping it continues.

elmar, I did use my regular Dentist, but I did ask alot of questions before I agreed to have them replaced. They used some sort of very strong vacum to suck the old ones out and assured me this was the method they use not to leave any residue. As for anti virals, no, I have never been treated by any. Do you mean antibiotics ??

Hi Mystic,
Thanks for your reply. A reg. dentist who did the vacuum thing -- you did well.
There are some newer antiviral meds -- diff from antibiotics -- that are sometimes being used in people w/elevated titers in FM/CFS. Other doctors use herbals/botanicals with broad spectrum antimicrobial action.
Best wishes.
