My son wrestles and got a fungus in his scalp back in June 2006 where he had hair loss. He was put on griseofulvin and nizoral shampoo which his hair grew back and after 8 weeks it came back so they put him on Grifulvin 500mg with milk which again it appeared to go away but, came back immediately so they continued him on the Grifulvin 500mg and added Xylogel which worked except he started having stomach pains, was getting weak and losing weight from being on the medicine which they doctor thought may have an impact on kidney/liver. Biggest issue is the kid is 10 weighs only 55 pounds (size of most 6 year olds) and the medicine issn't even for kids under 12! Then he's been on it for 7 months and the normal treatment is only 8 weeks.

They don't know what to do at this point other than continue the xylogel.

Anyone have any thoughts. We already tried a different dermatologist and all we've been told is it's an extremely strong fungus. Yes it was tested under a microscope and confirmed a fungal problem and was through his hair follicles.

There are anti fungal pills at health stores. Since he's a kid, ask your doctor if its safe for him to use. Just take a piece of paper and a pencil to the store, check out some products, then write down the ingredients and show them to his doc.
