I have thinning hair. It's has been going on since my daughter was born 9 years ago. My hair was thick before, now it's really thin. ( like baby fine)
I wish my hair was thick again but it's not happening? I asked a doctor about it once but he didn't tell me much. I know I had my tyhorids check before and it was fine. I don't know what else to do.

Are you taking any medications at all? How is your diet?

I don't take any meds. My diet is eating on the run most of the time.
I don't have alot of time to eat right.

You didn't say how old you are, but you might want to have your hormones checked. Also, since your diet is lacking you might try adding a multivitamin for women, some zinc, and biotin. Another thing that might be beneficial is to drink protein shakes. Hair is mostly made up of protein, so adding more would probably help.

It's common for women who have gone through child birth to lose some hair but it is supposed to grow back. Another factor is iron. A lot of pregnant women end up needing to go on iron supplements. Perhaps your iron has nose dived since giving birth and never really returned to its original levels.

I didn't know until i began a heap of research that your iron levels need to be over 70 for proper hair growth with no abnormal shedding. If i were you i would get a blood test done first and get your iron levels checked out. If it is the iron, you wont see immediate results and it can take as long as 6 months for visible signs that things are getting back to normal. You may simply have to get on a good diet and start taking a quality multivitamin with some extra iron, but first i'd get a blood test done so you will know for certain.

Thank you. I haven't been online in awhile because I haven't had time lately. But the next time I go to the doctor I will ask him aout it and see if he can check my iron level too. I'm 26 years old and my hair has been thinning since I was 17 after my daughter was born. It grows but it's just really thin like a baby's hair. when I pull my hair back into a ponytail you can see my scalp in some places. But I'll try what you said & I'll talk to my doctor too. Thanks again.

If your diet is bad your hair will suffer. Especially, if you are not getting enough protein and iron. It's the ferritin level you want checked. Be sure you ask for a serum ferritin level test. If it's below 70 you will have hair problems. And you'll need to be on supplements. Do you eat red meat?

It can happen even if you are on a good diet as other things can lead to your body not being able to absorb iron as well as it should such as insufficient enzymes and also due to gluten intolerance.

Nobody could have had a healthier diet than i did and i'm mystified as to how my iron problems began. I still think it goes back to years ago when i had an overgrowth of candida which lead to irritable bowel and even though i was eating healthy, all the vitamins went in one end and out the other (that's putting it politely :) ). I recovered but never took supplements very much and what i did take wasn't of high enough dosage to boost my iron up fast enough.

are you on iron supplements now? i suspect i have candida and i take lots of supplements - including acidophilus. did you get rid of your candida in the end and if so, how?

i realise i'm probably getting a bit off the hair topic. my hair is very thin, too and has been since i had my children (my youngest is 8) so it's been thin for a long time.

In the blood type diet book Dr D'Adamo says that people with blood type A have lower stomach acid which means they have trouble absorbing iron and are therefore often iron deficient. i am usually borderline iron deficient but i think that's because my periods are so heavy - sorry for TMI.

Wow, i didn't know that about blood type A.....then again, i dont even know which blood type i am. Next time i have my blood test i should get them to verify my type.

I got rid of my candida by taking an oral tablet (forget the name of it), taking acidophilous, taking a good quality multivitamin, going on a NO yeast/sugar/caffiene/dairy/alcohol/vinegar/certain fruits type of diet for a month so that the candida could be starved off in the stomach area. It was difficult to do at first and i wondered what on earth i could eat, but it simply meant finding replacement things out there and in the end there were lots of things to eat and i felt fantastic afterwards.

Is iron safe to take regularly? any side effects or will it causes any danger to my health if I take it regular?

Just like biotin. From this forum, a lot of females are taking biotin (spelling??)...but is that suitable for males as well?
