My son is 11 years old, had reconstructive surgery on his right ureter (narrow and wide) last September. He was healing great, then a week ago he developed almost same symptoms as pre surgery - pain in right ureter and lower back.

This pain is moving slooowly down the ureter. His CT scan was clear. Doctor is stumped. Small amt. of bacteria detected in urine.

First of all do ALL stones (even real small ones) show up on a CT scan?

Second, doesn't this sound like a stone ?

If it is moving, does that mean it will pass on its own?

What causes stones anyway?


Am giving pyridium, advil, and - per doctor keflex.

Allie, thanks for writing back to me. Did your son pass his stone on his own?
Our urologist took some time to believe me that it could be a stone, since it didn't show up on the CT, the stone has moved four inches in two weeks or so, but still has I think about an inch to go to be in the bladder. It seems to be right where the curve of the ureter is now, and he is in a lot of pain after not being in so much pain for several days.

Does the back pain come and go with stones?

We still dont have a definitive diagnosis; doctor wants to do cystoscopy, my son wants to wait thinks he will pass it.

Thanks for any advice! oh, we are giving him tons of water and trying the jump and bump stuff.

They were getting him ready to do a cysto and he got up to urinate and he passed one of them in the hospital. He was able to go home that night after passing that stone. He had 3 at that time.

wow, three. Your poor son. I just want to thank you for sharing this, it really helps to hear from another mom.

I am now wondering if we have more than one. he did feel it move all the way down right ureter from above his naval to just above (judging from scar from his reconstructive surgery) his bladder. Last night he got the severe back/kidney pain which he hasn't had since this began feb. 14. this past weekend the pain was less and the stone was moving (or at least what we call a stone since no one can see anything)

the big thing is that his urologist is going on vacation for two weeks. after telling me he wanted to wait and see until he got back- since stone was too small to show up on CT (or for whatever reason CT didn't show it) - but now he wants me to go ahead with a cysto on Monday (his last day in office.) my son doesn't want to do it, feels like it has moved this far, and he is SO gun shy about procedures/anesthesia etc. at this point.

also after the uro didn't seem to believe there was ANYTHING to be concerned about, now the rush seems wierd - he still insists my son couldn't be in any danger or have anything 'too serious...' and still says "well, if it IS a stone." What else would feel like a pill stuck in your ureter and painfully move thru it... this is maddening.

on Feb 14 when CT was run all looked perfectly normal and I heard the infuriating "is he having any problems at school?" junk like it was all in his head.

we had that before the reconstructive, but nothing now - although it's been 14 days, sigh.

we're not doing the cysto for now. I've put it off two weeks til his doctor returns, the stone moved again and is just right over the bladder. so hopefully it will pass...

I'm so sorry! I never knew there was a chance such surgery wouldn't take! that's always been my fear for my son, although the surgery itself looks good.

Oh, so sorry there too, it is always THE worst to have your children hurting. Do you think there is a correlation between surgery and stones? I do, but then what do I know.

Hi there!

Stones are build in the kidneys smostly from food consumption, do not give your son any food with small seeds like tomatoes, eggplants, bananas nuts, pop sodas, and water from the faucet, give him a glass of green coconut water every hour pure no additives, if you can't afford the coconut water then you can give him distilled water one glass every hour for 13 days and get him to urinate in a white container so you can see the stone passing if he has stone.

sorry to bother you again, my son's stone is now poking half in/half out (he says, and he should know I think at this point, its been four weeks since this started) of his bladder. hasn't moved now in two days, doctor is pushing to schedule cysto (two weeks out!) should I schedule do you think, or is it likely at this point it will just move into bladder?


And assuming it does - how bad is it when it's in the bladder? Better? Does it stay THERE forever?

we are now thinking this isn't my son's first stone, that he had one when he had stent in from surgery, and it didn't hurt passing thru ureter but caused the bladder spasms my doctor was convinced weren't really happening! he also had one day of sharp pain when urinated - i think taht was the other stone passing at that time, but again, i am guessing.

I saw my doctor on friday to remove the stent from surgery in the office, he said my urethrea is narrowing most likely from scar tissue. I have a very long road ahead of me personally, it's very difficult.

yeah me. recurrent utis although most problems went away after two pregnancies, dr. said had probably stretched in all the right places, LOL

Thank you! He is drinking almost that much water but haven't divided into hourly. I've never heard of the green coconut milk before.

We are so close, the thing is poking in his bladder, and now our urologist -- after discounting that it could even be a stone - is pushing for a cysto.

I am inclined to keep waiting because my son SO doesn't want anymore medical intervention, but it isn't an easy decision.
