greetings, i am new here. trying to find info on muscle spasms. heres the gist: i am 43, DX last june with type 2. trial diet for 3 months, levels all good on everything but doc gave me metformin to take twice a day, 500mg in am, same in pm. no side affects and feeling pretty good. was taking chromium, cinnomin, multi vities and calcium. trapped inside alot due to blizzard type conditions. we heat large older home with wood (no back up) and am chained to wood stove most 24/7.
ever since i was DX, i have muscle spasms in my legs at night when i go to bed. i sweat like crazy and feel hot and nauseus. it has now traveled to my arms as well. i have some confusion and dizziness, i have tested my sugar during these times and it varies. the spasms come after minutes of intense "ice water" feeling in my legs, it builds then releases in this manner. asked my doc who said he thought it was RLS, i don't think so. has that before years ago, not the same. there is no HX of diabetes in family, though i had gestational. its been 13 yrs since last child. i was EMT/Firefighter and diet was mainly junk food, lots of stress, little sleep. though i didn't have trouble with this until i quit work last year.
i get a fair amount of exercise in the good months. i am concerned because the jerking of my muscles is violent at times and hubby says i do this in my sleep too. last night i got up and walked around room and that helped some. hubby is paramedic x 19 years, he says its build up of some toxin he thinks? not sure. it feels like adrenlin pumping. i am having anxiety with it also on a constant basis now too. almost feels like anxiety attack. but no rapid breathing or tachycardia. during this episode last night sugar level at 98..?
any feedback would be greatly recieved!

I have seen other diabetics complain of muscular spasms. But I don't know what the explanation is. Are you taking a statin?

Mark :)

Statins are cholesterol lowering drugs (Lipitor, Zocor etc). Muscle weakness and spasms are a common side effect. Metformin is generally pretty safe. Lactic acidosis is a rare side effect and the symptoms are described on the packaging as follows :
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these symptoms of lactic acidosis: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting.
If that looks familiar, speak to your doctor.

Mark
