Yesterday was day one and went really well. I think the thing I missed the most was the ritual of smoking, and not the actual smoke and nicotine itself. I had to laugh at myself a few times last week when I actually forgot my breaks at work. Chantix does help a great deal. In the past I have tried the patch, the inhaler, and Wellbutrin.
I have been reading all the success stories here, and plan to be one of them, as my mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in November last year.

Hi Lynda,
Congrats!
Today is my quit day - I am also using chantix. I feel very prepared and very confident. I know it will be tough, but I know I can do it. I think at this point, like you said, it's not the craving, it's the habit.
You have found a great, supportive board here......
How are you feeling? Are you experiencing any of the side effects?

I'm very proud of you!! ;) I tried to quit in 2001 and on day 2, my Mother died in a freak car accident!! Needless to say, the quit was out the window and it took me another almost 5 years to get back to it. Hang in there and you and your Mom will be proud. I am sorry my Mom wasn't around to see me quit....she would have been very proud of me (as if that made that much difference in that department!!)

Hi Lynda,
Welcome to you!! Congratulations on your decision to become smoke free!!
I'm so sorry your Mom has cancer. But she will be so proud of you when you quit smoking. So will you!! It's not easy, but it is doable!! The Chantix helps tremendously. There is no way I could have quit without it. I had tried numerous times before.
We are all here if you need any advice. We will listen to you rant and rave if you feel like it. We will cheer you on as you become more confident in your quit. If it gets hard we will understand what you are going through because we have all been there.
Two days is a VERY BIG deal!! Pat yourself on the back.
Good Luck to you!! Keep us posted as to your progress. Remember now....
Smoking is not an option.

Thanks all!
Day 2 was a lot harder than day one, whew! But, I made it! I did call my Dr. though and get some samples of Rozerem. I know I dreamed last night, I just don't remember them. I thought it was odd that I actually had more nausea yesterday than I had prior to quitting. Did anybody else notice this? I hope I can drink enough water to flush the nicotine out quickly, I feel kind of flu-ish, or is it all in my head?
Have a good day!

Lynda,
The nausea is a little worse because the Chantix dosage is higher. You went from a 0.5 mg (white pill) to a 1 mg (blue pill). The flu like symptoms you are feeling is due to the nicotine withdrawal. Did you know that nicotine withdrawal actually begins about 20 minutes after you have your last cigarette? Quick, huh? These withdrawal symptoms will last a week or two. With the Chantix, the withdrawals are not as bad. After that you have to deal with getting rid of the habit. The Chantix also helps with that. I'm not sure which is harder, the addiction or the habit. Both are tough! But you can do it!!! You are doing it!!!!!!! Hopefully you will get some rest tonight.
Good Luck to you!

Thanks Memaw and Deb,
Yesterday I did feel a lot better physically. Still those twinges when I normally would smoke, like right now, after a meal, and in my car... long commute to work and certain landmarks I would light up.... How are all of you doing? How long have you been smoke free? Thanks for your support!

Just a note for KEYSTONE206 with the nausea. I started drinking half a glass of milk with my pills and of course followed by lots of water and the nausea completely disappeared. I noticed another side effect of mild blurry vision or it may be my new contacts need to be adjusted. Anyone have this particular symptom?

Has anyone noticed the extreme increase in the sense of smell since quitting??? my nose is so incredible sensitive now! I work in the medical field and when I am near a patient and they are a smoker boy, can I tell INSTANTLY!!! The medical field is probably the only occupation that you can (without them getting angry/insulted) talk to them about quitting and I talk about chantix with almost all of them! (I am gentle with them -because I know when I smoked, if someone preached to me, it was never really appreciated- they have to be good and ready!)
15 days smoke free!! YIPPEEEE!!!

Good for you Maryber! 15 days, that AWESOME! I can't wait to get there. Tomorrow is my quit day, I've had 2 today and could go out there and smoke the 4 remaining packs I have right now. I start my blue pills tomorrow. I might have to wait until Monday though, I know that sounds lame, but someone else wrote that weekends were tough for him, and he waited until Monday and then was okay. I'm okay during the week, plus my mother-in-law is coming next Friday and she doesn't know we smoke - I know, closet smoker!! My husband is quitting with me, as is my sister, so we are all going thru this together which helps some. Plus, everyone on the board is a HUGE HELP  - thanks for cheering us on!!

Skimmer,
It really doesnt sound lame that you want to wait until after the weekend to stop smoking, I smoked double on the weekends than I did during the whole week. I completely understand..... You just might not want to smoke or at least cut down over the weekend since you are starting the blue pills, either way.... you'll get there, you'll know when you are ready to set that quit day!! Good luck......

Lynda,
That's the "habit" you are talking about. Instead of lighting up a cigarette, grab a piece of gum or a piece of pepperment or some other hard candy. Some people carry fruit with them to eat at their usual "light up" places. You might keep some cinnamon sticks in the car to suck on.
dobie,
19 days smoke free is WONDERFUL!! Keep it up. You are doing so good. Aren't you proud of yourself? You should be!!
meryber,
You're right behind dobie!! 15 days down, a life time to go. You are on your way to a much brighter future. Keep on telling everyone who will listen to about how easy it was for you to quit. I do. Just think if you can get one person to quit....wouldn't that be awesome! You just might save a life. Cool, huh?
Skimmer,
If you want to wait until Monday, that's fine!! Do it when you feel you are ready. I was so scared to quit. That first day was terrifing for me. I was so afraid I was going to fail again. But I made it. Then I made it the second day. Then by the third day, I began to think...I can do this!!! WOW! I never knew I could. Not until the Chantix, though, could I have done it. Just believe you can do....It will happen!
Good Luck everyone!!!

Skimmer -
I wasn't sure if I would be ready, but the day before I quit, I took the full dose, and intentionally cut back the number of smokes I had. The last cig I had on Monday tasted like crap, and I only had 2 puffs. I quit on Tuesday, and was fine. You CAN do this. Pick a day, make a plan to keep yourself busy and you'll do great!

Skimmer, it doesn't sound lame at all. I did the same thing: my original quit date would have been 2/9 (a Friday) but I delayed until 2/12. I used the w/e to have my last "while driving", "while drinking", "while on the phone", etc. etc. At 9PM Sun. (2/11) I had my final cigarette so it's been One week, four days, 10 hours, 36 minutes and 38 seconds. 343 cigarettes not smoked, saving $90.10. Life saved: 1 day, 4 hours, 35 minutes.
My BF quite enjoyed smashing then giving a bath to the last 4 left in my pack! :p
W/O Chantix there is no doubt in my mind that I would still be smoking and feeling incredibly crappy [breathing]. Even in my bad moments, I know I've done the right thing [I can breathe, I can smell things I never noticed, "I" don't smell].
As you can probably already see, this board is a HUGE inspiration -- I visit daily (sometimes it seems like all day). So come back often and keep us posted!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement! I really need it. I've only had 2 today, but today was supposed to be my quit day. The cigs are starting to taste funny, so that's a good sign. My hubby's quit day is today, so if he's not smoking, then maybe I won't either. We'll see how the weekend goes. I will keep coming back here because reading how you all have done it, makes me feel like I can do it too! It's such a joy to have people like yourselves helping us out - cheering us on - giving us hope - that we, too, can someday become non-smokers!! Looking forward to that day when I can brag how many hours, days, minutes I have been smoke-free!! :p

It wouldn't be fair to smoke the weekend in front of him, and the sooner I quit, the better!! So, we're doing good so far!! So you're one week smoke-free? Congrats to you!! That's awesome! Hi I found this board last week. I am just finishing my second week of Chantix
I am still craving yesterday was horrible it was like I had not even taken the Chantix. I was a 3 pack a day smoker and I got down to a couple of puffs of one cigerette a day but just couldn't seem to get through that. I do get very sick each time I take the pill, I was just wondering if it took anyone else looker thn the 7 days. I really and true do want to quit. Please give feedback on if it took anyone longer.
thank you.

Yeah, I didn't even count the days, because I am weaning myself. But it was somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd week on Chantix I quit. Probably the third, because during the second week I cut way down before actually quitting. I quit three days, went back to it for a week (because the pack lasted a week) and am now on day 6 of quitting. By now I'm somewhere in my second month of Chantix, but I didn't even track what day I started taking them.
Also, the nausea seems to lessen the longer I take the pills.

Hi, my doctor prescribed me Chantix yesterday took the 1st pill the second I got home. I had a messed up sleep cycle but I was able to get to sleep at 5 A.M. No biggy. I also remember dreaming bout what I have no clue but I haven't dreamed or remembered dreaming for probably 10 years.
It's now day 2 and I've taken my second pill I have a question, Chantix blocks nicotine from having any affect, anyone have it to where into the 2nd day it started inhibiting the nicotine? My reason for asking is I've smoked 5 cigarettes since I woke up 3 hours ago and it's like I haven't had a single one I'm feigning like crazy but now I'm too the point of if it's already working why should I keep trying to get that nicotine blast??
Maybe it's all in my head, but man if it is already working I wish I woulda known that it could start the next day cause I was told that I didn't have to quit until the 2nd pack, god I'm sitting here smoking another one and besides the taste and physical connection I'm not getting anything.
Meh, what the hell am I complaining for whether it's the Chantix or my brain reacting to the hope of Chantix working, if cigarettes don't give me nicotine then what the hell am I smoking this thing for -(puts cigarette out)-.
I'm 26 been smoking since I was 19 and I really want to quit I can usually last 8 days without any helpers before I go nuts and am practically willing to kill for a cigarette, the down side is smokers cough. I smoke about 20-25 cigs a day hell just walking the 2 blocks to Walgreens to get the prescription puts me out of breath and coughing up my lungs.
No matter what though whether I end up smoking again today in 8 days or whatever, I'm going to continue taking the Chantix I don't care how bad sleep goes to hell.
