Hi, I quit chewing tobacco nine days ago after doing it for about 6 years and haven't felt worse in my life. I get chest pains and arm pains. My face feels flushed at times. I can't sleep at all at night. I sleep for an hour or so at a time and wake up again, it's terrible. I feel like I'm having a constant panic attack and sometimes I just feel like I need to cry. Are these things normal or is there something else wrong with me. Please help!

Hi Jeff,
Congratulations on quitting nicotine!!! Nine days is quite an accomplishment and you should be pretty proud of yourself!!!
I did not chew tobacco, rather I smoked it for over 30 years. So I am not sure if I can provide much help. However the conditions you described sounded like nicotine withdrawal symptoms. They are as follows:
Nicotine withdrawal symptoms:
Irritability, Mood Swings, Restlessness, Insomnia, Fatigue
Inability to Concentrate, Sore Throat, Cough, Congestion, Headache,
Increased Appetite, Constipation, Gas, Stomach Pain, Dry Mouth,
Sore Tongue/Gums , Postnasal Drip, Tightness in the Chest.
I think you will find these conditions will improve over time the longer you stay away from nicotine completely. I recommend you check with your doctor to see if he / she can provide advise. Your doctor may even proscribe something mild to help you to sleep at night.
Sure hope things improve for you. Best of luck!!!

Hi Jeff, I had all the w/d's except the chest pain. I couldn't sleep and my doctor gave me Ambian. I'm not so sure that's a good idea for me, but that's a topic for another forum.
Congratulations on quitting, keep up the great work!! :blob_fire :blob_fire

Jeff,
You described classic nicotine withdrawal. It will pass. You might call or go see your doctor to help you with the symptoms. Are you doing this cold turkey? Without any nicotine replacement or medication? You might want to consider one if the withdrawal gets too bad and you are tempted to just go back to chewing. This is a terrible addiction. It is a hard addiction to get over. But it can be done!! Just look at all the people on this board that are succeeding. You can too. Have you gone to smokefree.gov? It will help explain the addiction and what your body is going through and how to beat it!! The more you know the better you are able to deal with the withdrawals.
Good Luck to You!! Please let us know how you are doing.

Thank you all for your responses to this. I think it is just anxiety and have gone to the doctor about the chest pains and arm pains. He has sent me to get a chest x-ray and an EKG. The results for the x-ray haven't come back to me yet and the EKG is fine. Also, I work out at the gym on the elliptical machine and find that I don't get any worse chest pains or anything. The thing I find odd is that I have lost my appetite instead of felt more hungary. Maybe it's all the stress of thinking that something is really wrong with me.
