Hi, I am a 16 year old and my mother has had pancreatitis three times in the past 5 years, and my aunt has type-2 diabetes. Should I be worried that diabetes is in my future?
Thanks

Should I be worried that diabetes is in my future? Thanks Sponsor softball19 02-21-2007, 11:32 AM hey, im 16 years old too. my grandmother had diabetes and thyroid disease, and i already have thyroid disease and since i have thyroid disease there is a good chance that i will get diabetes. it is some what caused by your family members having it, so there is a good chance you could get it. just watch for the symptoms.. - meliss london12 02-21-2007, 12:13 PM Well one day my doctor advised that I buy a testing kit because I was having some issues with feeling really crappy and one instance when I was feeling crappy, I was 72 mg/dl and another time I was 198 mg/dl. So I'm not sure - perhaps I could have pre-diabetes. I need some advice - what are some symptoms and how can I track them??? softball19 02-22-2007, 10:05 AM i would just ask your primary doctor if he can do a fasting blood sugar test, it would be more accurate. the symptoms are : increased thirst increased urination increased hunger blurry vision & fatigue shellshell82 02-25-2007, 04:39 PM I would ask for a 2 hour oral glucose tolerance test, since fasting glucose tests miss 80% of glucose abnormalities. Do you ladies have PCOS as well? london12 02-25-2007, 07:21 PM Do you ladies have PCOS as well? I'm sorry, I have no idea what that means. :) I do have a lot of fatigue  but have no way to track my thirst and stuff. ah well. luvmyyorkie 02-25-2007, 11:37 PM Well one day my doctor advised that I buy a testing kit because I was having some issues with feeling really crappy and one instance when I was feeling crappy, I was 72 mg/dl and another time I was 198 mg/dl. Same question for when it was 198. london12 02-26-2007, 12:05 AM the 198 was at like 11 pm, so I hadn't eaten anything for a while. i just felt odd. smip 02-27-2007, 10:21 PM You should ask for a fasting glucose with an A1C along with other tests that your doctor would know what to test for. (c-pep, medobolic panel, ect) The GTT is good for pregnant gals. One usually does not diagnose diabetes in normal non preg. folks with just an OGTT. |
