im not sure if it is "legal" to dicuss this on the boards but if it is and anyone knows... could you give me the names of some good RE's in NYC? Im starting to look into some. I work at NYU so if i found a good one here that would be even better.

For all of you experience people... how do you go about finding a good RE? What should i be looking for and where?

thanks,
aymie

Hi Aymie,

I can't give you any names or anything - I'm in Pennsylvania - but I was referred to my RE by my OBGYN. That would be a good place to start. I was very fortunate that his office is close (we're in a small town, not many specialists), his success rates are good, and they make me feel extremely comfortable. I think I really lucked out in that I didn't have to 'shop around'.

Of course, some of the most important factors would be:

How comfortable they make you feel
Whether or not they accept your insurance
Success Rates
Pricing

Don't know if that helped of not, but I hope so!

thanks holly.. it does help

my assumption would be anyone in NYC is going to be crazy pricey! If I go to NYU doctors I think i get a little break on the cost but nothing crazy. I have 10k maximum lifetime on IF. Im sure Ill go through that really quickly and then will be paying out of pocket.

Success rates i guess are a good thing for me to look at. My OB will give me some names march 1 when i go back but sometimes i like to do outside research. Since the FI is a doctor i know how referels work. Doctors will sometimes refer to another doctor because the other doctor refers to him or because they have a friendship ... not nec because its the best one out there. I see it happen at FI's hospital all the time. They create a little clique and as much as I love my OB-GYN... even the best doctors do it sometimes.

where in PA are you? My sleepaway camp was there and all my friends from camp grew up in PA

Aymie, you would be surprised how long that $10k could actually last. Insurance companies get to set maximum amounts on how much they will pay for procedures, and often times, it is MUCH less than a patient would pay out of pocket. It's not fair at all if you ask me, but it might work out in your favor in that it will take a little longer to reach your limit...

That is disheartening what you say about dr's and referrals, but I believe it. I guess it is just business everywhere these days.

I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Allentown on the PA Turnpike. I doubt you would have heard of the town I live in, but some surrounding *cities* (I use that term lightly ;) ) are Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and Hazleton. What is the name of the camp you used to go to? I used to go to Camp Ladore in Waymart, PA as a kid. I loved it there and met many people from NY, MD, and DE!

and that is exactly why doctors dont make much money anymore these days. The insurance is killing their practices. An ortho surgeon used to get 5k for a knee scope. Now they get $870. My FI went into medicine at the wrong time!!! but hes passionate about it and for that i respect him a lot!

I went to nock-a-mixon for years its in kintnersville PA. I know allentown. Most of my friends were from bala cynwood, huntingdon valley... i forget the other towns. i loved camp so much!

it would be great if 10k would last me awhile. originally i was going to switch onto FIs insurance when we got married but then i found out i have PCOS and everything changed. his insurance gives 80% of 15k lifetime max BUT you have to use north shore/lij doctors which for me isnt convenient since he takes the car to Long Island to go there everyday and I wouldnt have a way of getting back and forth for all those visits... so now ill stay on mine. besides i think city doctors are better anyway (no offense to my wonderful FI)

Yeah, and then add in the cost of professional liability insurance...We have a HUGE problem with that in Pennsylvania...Dr's are leaving the state left and right because of the astronomical premiums.

I've never heard of that camp before, but I'm ashamed to say, I'm not very well traveled. I can get lost in my own town some days...drives my BF crazy! :) He knows the area better than me, and he was born (and spent most of his childhood) in NYC while I have lived here my whole life. :jester: What can I say? I'll blame it on being blonde.

My insurance has a max of 3 IUI's in a lifetime and there is no coverage for IVF's at all. No coverage for injectibles either. I'm trying to get my employer to offer some better choices...No word back yet on that.

Well, good luck to you! I really hope you get lucky before you even have to see an RE

My RE is affiliated with NYU and Valley Hospital in NJ. Name is Ali Nasseri and he is wonderful. First impression may need always be great but in the long run glad I used him. Not sure if he has an office at NYU still but if he does - go for it!
