Hello there.

My Mother has just been diagnosed as a diabetic. She's been put on a diet + she has to take oral medicine for it. I'm going back to the UK in just over a week + I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to support her. She was feeling down the other day when we spoke + unfortunately I don't have much knowledge of diabetes.

Thanks.:)

How well someone does with diabetes really depends upon the person. People with diabetes need to get their blood sugar under control. In order to do this, they usually need to 1) change their diet, 2) often lose weight, 3) take medicine 4) exercise on a regular basis, 5) get enough sleep, and 6) keep stress down. At first this can seem overwhelming, but all of this is can be done with education and desire. You can be a very big help if you learn about diabetes and encourage your mother to find and follow a regime that works for her. There is not cure, but diabetes can be controlled.

Thanks for the reply HannahAnn:)

She has started to lose weight which I have been on for her to do for a long time, plus she is sleeping ok, too much in fact. As for her diet + excercise I'll just have to give her lots of encouragement.
