Hey everyone,

I was just put on Protonix a few weeks ago, for some acid reflux issues. My brother told me that he only had to go on it for a while, and then takes an occasional over the counter (Prilosec) now and then. Or, are people generally on it for long periods of time. I guess I'm not sure if it is supposed to 'fix' reflux issues after being on it for a while, or if it's never really 'fixed'.

Thanks in advance :)

Yes, everyone is different. Even though I had gastritis (mild) with occasional nausea for 40+ years, I never had to take a PPI (probably weren't out then). I recently had a bad episode (lst one) & put on Protonix. Took it for about 6 weeks, and have stopped due to the side affects. Dr. said if my stomach got worse off of it, you can do it for a couple of weeks & get off.

Personally I cannot take drugs anyway, and this is one of the worst I've taken, so for me, as it gave me symptoms like heartburn (not a prior symptom), along with many other side affects. It's just if my stomach symptoms require it very short term.

I was on Protonix for 4 years and have currently been on Prevacid for 1 year. I anticipate being on the PPI's indefinately.

I was taking Protonix for gastritis and it didn't help at all. I had my gall bladder removed (separate issue) and afterwards started taking Famotidine (Pepcid AC) at the suggestion of my surgeon. I was amazed at how well it worked. I was having terrible stomach pains at night and this stuff stopped that. I can take it either before a meal, or after the pain begins, works both ways although before works better. You might try Famotidine or some alternate products. Sometimes your body chemistry will work better with one drug over another.
