I went to the doctor today and he asked me how the chantyx was doing.I told him I wanted to use my nicotrol inhaler because chantyx can cause headachs and nausua. I haven't thrown up in many years and don't want to start now. He told me thhe only people that feel sick are the ones that smoke. NOT TRUE I said since you are able to smoke in the beginning or am I wrong???? he said we can manage my headachs (I get several migraines a mmonth) and he in the past told me to get off of the fioricet that had worked so well for me.I have done that also.So I am out of options.I don't want to change doctors because he is very good giving refferals to my husband who still needs so many tests and will in the next few years because of his lung cancer(he is cancer free right now). i can't lie to him because he will know that I am not getting my script filled and asking for future scripts and also there goes my script for the inhaler.HELP ME PLEASE>

Hi Lorrie,
The first week you take chantix, you are taking 1/2 the dosage and they recommend that you keep smoking. I noticed that I felt some nausea after I smoked while on it, and my cigs weren't tasting so good anymore. I made sure that I ate and drank lots of water when I took my pill. Now that I am not smoking (day 4!) I don't feel that nausea. I never felt like I was going to vomit. I feel totally in control, and have been in a good mood.
It sounds like you have a lot to deal with right now. Are you certain that you don't want to at least try chantix?
Could you take it with some anti-nausea medicine?
Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Thanks Deb for the reply and congrads on your sucess.I have no choice but to take the chantix. I have been smoking since I was 15 and I am now 62.I smoke two packs a day so it will not be day 4 that I will be smokefree.I just liked the inhaler and should have just used it all the time a few years back. I don't think the doctor would have had a case to tell me only chantix.I fear the migraines they are hard to deal with and I don't like I said need a side effect of headachs.I have a lot to think about.

lorriem, you have to quit when you want to quit, not when others want you to quit. I am sure there are people out there that never quit. If you do decide to quit, it will be the best health decision you have ever made.
Does your husband smoke? If not, was he a former smoker?
Only you can make this decision, lorriem... here are a few    to help you make it!

Lorriem - you can do this. If you read the boards, there are people who have smoked for 50 yrs and have tried everything to quit!! But nothing worked until Chantix! And it wasn't so bad after all, quitting, being able to breathe again, smelling the fresh air, tasting the good food! You will want to quit, and when you do, we will be here for you, supporting you the entire way. Keep posting and let us know how you're doing....

I would recommend you give the Chantix a chance. I have been a heavy smoker for over 55 years and could never quit. Chantix has been a miracle for me. I did have nausea and some headaches in the beginning. The headaches disappeared in the second week. I quit smoking 9 days after I started the Chantix. Once I quit the nausea was much less and went away completely by the end of the third week. It helps to take the medication with food and lots of water. I split my pills in half and take them over the course of the day. That helped with the nausea. You may want to ask your Doctor about that.
For me it has been well worth it. I am now starting my fifth smoke free week. This is the first time I have been smoke free since my early teens and it feels great.

5 weeks is awesome! Do you feel great, or what?? :) 55 years is a long time to be a smoker. I guess I've been smoking since my teens too, and I'm 44 - so damn, that's a long time to be a smoker! The Chantix seems to be working for alot of people. Lorrie, you should at least try it, what have you got to lose? Maybe it will totally surprise you and work! You need to set your mind to it though, that you truly want to quit and why and keep reminding yourself why.

Ray you give me hope that I to can be smoke free and yes I should give it a chance. I keep reading this board and have been for several weeks and it is an insperation but those darn headaches I don't want to start the fioricet again that really can mess with the liver. But I have had migraines since I was 8.That is a long time dealing with them ( I have never had a drink either for fear of a migraine) and to take a drug that can cause headaches gives me pause. I would hate to start chantix and hurry up my quit date just so I would't have any side effects that would defeat everything. I just hate being told by my doctor that I have to do this his way. I do have the script and have even taken it to the store where my scripts are filled but didn't follow through. You are all right though I have nothing to lose except $100 plus. Why did I think it was the cool thing to smoke when I was 15?

Lorriem I would tell you to go ahead and try the Chantix. I think one of the things that made me decide to try it was you could smoke the first week as it built up in your system. The first day I smoked just like normal and was thinking it might be a waste of time. The second day I smoked about 10 cigs less. The same with the following days. I just tried paying attention to why I was going out for a smoke. Did I really need it? And yes, sometimes I said yes I need it. But for the most part, I didn't and it was habit. I will tell you the Chantix has given me TREMENDOUS willpower and for me it is a miracle drug. I am only smoke free since Thursday but I don't have the heebies from not having a cigarette. And in 9 hours it will be 48 hours smoke free. As far as the headaches, not everyone I have read has them. I had a slight headache right after taking it, but nothing I needed to take anything for. And some folks have split their does up throughout the day and that seemed to help them. Keep us posted and good luck to you:wave:

Lorriem: Please, please try the Chantix! I did not have the headaches nor the nausea. You might not either! I did feel a little bit foggy - but so WHAT! If I can quit smoking forever, isn't it worth it? I would've given anything to quit smoking. You only get one shot at life, and don't you want to make it as long as possible? I kept losing friends to cancer in their 40's, I thought "how sad" or that's horrible, I couldn't imagine. Well, "HELLO!!" - if I ddin't stop smoking, how was I going to realize my dream of retiring and cruising the islands? I've been saving my money all these years, so I could, what? Pay for medical bills because I smoke?? I THINK NOT!! I need to go out and see the world!!!!!
Lorrie - please just try it - if it sucks, then you can quit!! But it really does help you quit smoking. I promise!! And the people posting here are proof in the pudding!! Good luck and keep posting to let us know how you're doing. I'm almost 24 hours smoke-free and I went boating today and drank beer and haven't had a cig!! WOOO HOOOO FOR ME!! I'm totally convinced this is a miracle
drug and can't figure out why they don't offer it for free!!

Well Lorriem keep us posted and ask questions. Also, like I said I read through every post there was on this site about Chantix and people's reactions. I'm an RN and read through the literature the pharmaceutical company provides and finally believed that what they were writing made sense. Just try not to worry about the headache, and if you need to play with your dose, like cut it in half, or take after a meal, some of the people on this site have done that with success and have quit. Good luck and let us know.

Lorriem: glad you've decided to give chantix a try. I never thought I'd be able to quit and here I am over 2 weeks. As others have said the nausea is minor (you don't feel like you'll actually be sick) and for me, as long as I drank a FULL glass of water (not just enough to swallow the pill) I was fine. I never did experience headaches. Actually I used to have a daily headache (I think from lack of oxygen) but since I quit, I haven't had one headache. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

Hi Lorriem,
Congratulations on your decision to begin using Chantix. I do not think you will be disappointed. I smoked for over 32 years and quit using this drug over a month ago. The drug made is so much easier and I do not think I could have done this on my own.
When you take the Chantix it blocks nicotine receptors in your brain from feeling the effects of nicotine. The more you take it, the more it builds up in your system, and the less you want to smoke. So you are more than likley going to start feeling withdrawal symptoms while you are still smoking and will want to smoke less. The Nicotrol inhaler will not work while you are taking Chantix. Same goes for all other nicotine replacement therapies (NRT's), the Chantix will block the effects of these. So save your money...
Chantix helps you deal with the addiction to nicotine by blocking it's effects. You, on the other hand, have to deal with the habit part of smoking.
Hope this helps...

Hi Lorriem
Just another booster - I started taking chantiz 36 days ago and have not smoked in 27 days. I never thought I could quit either but chantix made it so easy. You have a lot of life left to live and wouldn't it be nice to be able to live it without the effects of smoking? I only had nausea when I didn't eat or drink enough water. My sleep is better now and I couldn't be happier about this quit. As a matter of fact I am looking forward to excercising my clean lungs now. Good luck to you.

After you quit smoking for a month or so you may find your migraines improve. Smoking is known to make them worse.
