My name is Wailana. I'm Free and Healing for Sixteen Days and 11 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 13 Hours, by avoiding the use of 160 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me $41.49.

KarenAre we twins? I didn't even read your answer here and I posted almost the same thing in your new thread! LOL
By the way, it was cold at the beach today, 71 degrees with a fairly strong wind. I had to cover myself with my towel the whole time I was there.

Okay - do I want one? Or need one? No, but do I crave one? YES! I haven't been 24 hour since quitting yet - and we went boating today - and I drank 3 beers, so, yes I could use one, that's what we did!! Boating, and smoking and drinking! But I'm doing good - I don't feel like I HAVE to HAVE one - I'm fine. My hubby is a little snippy at me - but that's okay too... We clean up the back porch today, and I did 3 loads of laundry, and cleaned out his "smoker" car - OMG - that was a mess. You wouldn't believe all the places ashes go in a car!! Anyway, we're doing good - one more hour and I'll be 24 hrs smoke free! WOOO HOOO!! I know I have a long way to go, but it's a good start,

Oh, me too, Skimmer! I think we'll make it to 6 months and then a year and so on. Chantix is like a miracle to me because it seems like I didn't have to have any willpower. This is the first time that I've quit that I haven't searched the house and car for cigarette butts to smoke...so disgusting. I always reasoned that they didn't count as really smoking because they were already smoked..pretty dumb, huh? Lol, I can even remember looking longingly at the butts in public ash trays and wanting to smoke one. How sick is that? :D
Everyone keep up the good work! We can do it!:bouncing:

OK Karen1711, I am laughing out loud about checking the public ashtrays for butts. I was thinking today of digging the butts out of the garbage can that I threw away, BUT I DIDN'T. But it was funny, I went to the grocery today and there must be a smoking area out front because I could smell it as soon as I walked through. But it was like hyper-smell, and really disgusting. I think I saw someone else say that too.

You are farther along than me with a week under your belt, but I'll get there, I'm right behind you. Today marks my first smoke-free day - 13 hours so far - I know it's far from a week, but I'll get there. Chantix is the wonder drug! I feel good - cept for some mild nausea even when taken with food and water, but no vomiting - just a second or two of "I don't feel so good." then it passes. And one night of insomnia. I'm doing great! So far so good!!
Good for you - one week is awesome!! :)

Tampaquit, I guess we have to be honest here,...I did dig in the garbage, LOL.:D Good for you that you didn't.:) I know what you mean about the smell. Now that I'm not smoking I can only describe it as a sort of icky heavy odor. I think we're less likely to smoke since we are so affected by the smell.
Skimmer, that nausea will pass. I also get nauseated if I don't eat enough before I take the pill. No other side effects except I think I'm eating more....you gotta have something.:p Guess I missed out on those wonderful dreams some of the others have talked about.

Traveller...you go girl...I didn't realize it had been so long since you quit! Hooray for you!
Want a cigarette....or nicotine?? I shall say not! ;) Not now, not never.... not forever...I think even if they allow us one in the after-life, I'll turn it down! LOL :nono: And I don't want anybody's 2nd hand smoke either, thank you very much! LOL Smoking sucks...so much! I hate cigarette smoke! (wow, can't believe this is coming outta my mouth, as I used to LOVE em so much!)
Skimmer...best of luck with your quit...you sound like you have such a great attitude, there's no way you'll fail. We'll see you here making announcements in a month, 6 months, 1 year, etc.,... just keep all of those positive thoughts going, and eliminate any negative thoughts if they happen to come along, ASAP! :P GOOD LUCK !!!!!
Karen....I laugh whenever I'm reminded about "digging up butts". I remember (years ago, during many of my failed quits), and vowing not to smoke a whole day, and by night time, there I was,....in the trash can outside, [after getting all I could out of the kitchen trash] diving in head first! Eww gross..huh?! And if I found one longer than an inch of so, boy was I excited!! Insanity!! Like a freakin crack addict, ya know?
Good idea Traveller...you got everyone talkin'. :) And sorry the beach was too cold at 70....wind ruins everything sometimes, huh? We're having rain right now, after so long without it, it was looking like another drought. I can't wait for summer! I'm a summer girl all the way...and I hate this freaking cold, wet stuff! Supposed to go to N. C. to visit our daughter next month....I hope it will be warmer by then.
Happy Sunday, all of you [very smart] non smokers!

Keep up the good work everyone.
Two weeks, 13 hours, 44 minutes and 10 seconds. 437 cigarettes not smoked, saving $114.76. Life saved: 1 day, 12 hours, 25 minutes.

HI everyone!! No I don't want a cigarette today...this is my official quit day and since the last 4-5 days I have smoked maybe 1/2 a cigarette. Today has been a fairly easy day. I was working and looked up at the time and realized that the normal "break time" earlier this morning had already passed and didn't even think about it. I actually went outside to get a little sunshine (it's a beautiful day today) a bit ago with a coworker who smoked and didn't even have the slightest desire to light up. Whoo hoo for me!!! :blob_fire Way to Go Everyone!! I am proud of each and everyone of you!!

No, I don't want a cigarette today! I'm not going to want any tomorrow either. I'm now on day 31 and it does get easier everyday. I didn't even think about cigarettes today. This whole quit has been so much easier than I expected. Thank You Chantix!

Hi RD!
Congrats on not wanting a cig today. Wow, quit day is here for you - my quit day was Friday - and I'm doing just fine. Got thru my workday okay - I don't smoke at work, so that wasn't the problem. It was the 2 I smoked before work and the immediate one when I got home, but I went to the store after work and now I'm cooking dinner. Just keeping busy - occupodo - no tmie to think about smoking (except for when I'm on here and reading about it, which is mostly NOT smoking!)
So, how's the Chantix working for you? Any side effects? Man, I get a queasy stomach as soon as I take it, and I always take it with food and plenty of water, maybe I need to do more water. It only lasts a few minutes, and I never feel like throwing up, just a slight, ewww, my tummy hurts a little. So, I can live with that. And the sleep thing, getting less hours of it, but so far, so good - I did some exercise this morning. Just a teeney bit - don't want to shock my body too badly at first. That would be my luck, quit smoking and have a heart attack from working out!! DANG!
RD keep us posted on your progress. This board is great with a lot of supporters on here for you. Not sure I could do it without all the people writing to cheer us on. We can do this - if we all stick together!!

My attitude, aside from "smoking is not an option" is
"smoking will NOT fix my problems" - I need to remember this and keep repeating it, because it is true!
It won't solve my problems, or make them disappear. It won't make me feel better.
Today is day 8 and it would seem my lungs are ready to get rid of some crap....I was coughing so hard I almost threw up. Anyone out there experience this?

Hi Deb!!
Oh! I love it!! "Smoking will NOT fix my problems"
It is so true. We all have to find new ways to deal with our problems now. We can't postpone them by stopping and smoking any longer.
What I do is stop and
a) get me something to drink b) eat an apple or orange or peanuts
c) get on the air walker for a few minutes.
By doing these things it helps me to stop and think about what my problem is and maybe come up with a solution.
About the coughing.......Oh yeah!! I coughed up all kinds of gunk.
I'm still clearing my lungs. Every so often some stuff will come up. I don't know how long it takes to clear them out. I need to find that out.
You are doing super in your quit. Day 8 is wonderful.:blob_fire
Keep it up.

I'm still clearing my lungs. Every so often some stuff will come up. I don't know how long it takes to clear them out. I need to find that out.
You are doing super in your quit. Day 8 is wonderful.:blob_fire

wailana,
19 days is really awesome!! You are doing so good. The fog should be lifting pretty soon. You should also have a little more energy shortly. It takes about a month or so after you quit. Try some light exercise. That should help pull your energy level up. Don't know what to tell ya about getting up in the middle of the night. I've been doing that for years!! If I were to ever again sleep for 8 straight hours, I don't know how I'd act.
Keep it up!! You're doing soooooo good!!

Wailana - 20 days - WOOO HOOOO!! Still eating those peanut butter cookies?
Memaw - I have found that having an apple or banana in the car helps - I also have some lollipops. The time of day that is toughest (and it's not that tough anymore...) is at night..... I just do my best to keep busy, or I end up eating and eating. It's better than smoking and smoking though!
I DO NOT want a disgusting, stinky, cancer causing cig today!

This might sound silly and I'm not sure if I read this idea here or in Allen Carr's book but a tip when you're driving: put the radio on and sing -- I don't mean that lame voice that used to accompany the radio in between puffs, I mean, ALL OUT SING (like LaKisha on American Idol). Even if you don't have a voice like me (monotone), it's awesome----not only are you singing in a way you never could while also having a cigarette, I find it almost stress releasing!

OMG - I sing in the car all the time - and then I think, What an idiot I must look like. Because I've seen people before singing and dancing in the car, all by themselves. But you know what? Who cares!! Pick your favorite Rolling Stones, Credence, Chili Pepper or Kelly Clarkson CD and sing away.....

No I don't want a cigarette now but I have to admit that I did earlier but I prevailed and didn't smoke one. It has been a long hard day, my hubby's Aunt and Uncle's house got hit by the tornado in Americus Thursday night and hubby's been there since then and today we have been cleaning trees out of just about everywhere around there house, thankfully nobody was hurt and we had a wonderful group of people helping!! It is just horrible what damage I witnessed today, the news said over 200 houses were hit. :-(
Well didn't mean to go on about it. Everyone have a good smoke free night!!

[QUOTE=mangojunky;2824257]My attitude, aside from "smoking is not an option" is
"smoking will NOT fix my problems" - I need to remember this and keep repeating it, because it is true!
It won't solve my problems, or make them disappear. It won't make me feel better.
I love this! This should be everyones mantra. I smoked for 13 years, and although I found it fairly easy after listening to allen carr's cd (I'm on my 12th smoke free day) I still need positive affirmation every now and then! Good job everyone, and congratulations!

Oh Rhonda!!
I'm so sorry your family was in the way of that tornado!! But, thank the Lord that ya'll are all okay. I've been in one tornado, and hope I'll never be in another one!!!!!!! Considering the stress of the situation, I'm very proud that you have remained smoke free!! Congratulations to you!!!!
Do you want to hear something pitiful? On July 22, 2003, we got hit by a really bad thunderstorm that had straight line winds in excess of 100 mph. They called it Hurricane Elvis. Anyway...I was out on my back patio smoking my cigarette as the wind howled around the house and uprooted trees all up and down the street.
I'm so glad I didn't want a cigarette today!!
sunstar,
I agree with you. Smoking really does not solve a thing. Just makes matters worse. Congratulations on being smoke free for 12 days. Way To Go!!!!
Keep it up!! You're doing sooo good. I just wish that I could just snap my fingers and that would be it....no more smoking....no more craves...no withdrawals....no side effects from drugs or NRT. Wouldn't that be wonderful?!! But here in the real world it is not like that. It is a hard addiction to kick. But ON THIS BOARD WE ARE KICKING BUTT!!!!

I don't want a cig/nicotine today. Yesterday (Friday) I had so strong cravings. I didn't give into them. My thoughts of lighting up was tough. You seem to be having a little harder time of it here lately. Of course I'm glad you didn't have one!! Is there anything we can do to make you feel better or to help you? At 6 months 3 weeks and 3 days there are times when I think I'd like to have one, but then the thought usually leaves as fast as it arrived. I don't know how I would handle it if it got stuck and stayed in my head longer than that. Hopefully, I would be strong and not smoke. I know you are a strong person!! You've proven that. It just seems that you are a little down lately.

I breathed in wonderful, fresh, 82 degree air all day today, [and we were digging the sun too] as I went on hike with one of my girlfriends (also an ex-smoker)...it felt great to be able to do this! Had I not quit smoking...I probably couldn't have trekked up these hills/small mountain...I really doubt I could. What a great rush to know I could still do this, after all of this time!
I know for certain, as long as I live, I don't ever want another cigarette, ever again!! I worked to hard too get here....too many quits, too much work, and I love being a non smoker...I've had enough of that quitting game, this one is for keeps...and I know I can say this with certainty now, as I don't miss smoking one little bit. I can't believe I was so afraid to quit....and look how many on this board have quit and are so thrilled about it! :) It's really super to see so many happy, postive people, all a result of stopping smoking.
Congratulations to all of you [strong] people! (You're all awesome!)
:nono: Callin' it quits, for-ever!
Bless everyone of you!

Deda - sounds like a great day! I can't wait to ride my bike to work so I can see the difference!
I'm with you - this one is for GOOD! It's getting easier every day, and I am working on healthier eating and lots of exercise. I DON'T miss smoking (at least today :D )

Hi Mangojunky...
I think it really does get a little easier everyday....and every month gets better, and you will one day reach a point where you will hardly think about them anymore...it just takes time. I thought the first 6 months dragged by so slowly, and after that, it seemed like things were so much eaiser... you'll get there too. One good, (great) thing is...Spring & summer are coming, and you can get out and do more outdoor activities...like you say, ride your bike to work, take walks, and all of that helps so much, just getting your mind off smoking, and focused on all around improving one's health. I love summer so much, I even enjoy washing my car, just to be out in the sun. (I was just telling my son today, I want to get out in the sun, [again] this weekend, as I bet I'm lacking some vitamin D) :) It felt so good to be out in the sun this past weekend.
Isn't it funny, mangojunky, how after we quit, we suddenly want to start taking better care of our health, all around? I eat so well now,...lots of fruit and veggies every day, fish, protein shakes, whole grains, and I take vitamins,...never skip days either. When I was a smoker, I rarely ate a breakfast...maybe an occasional pop tart, (junk!) LOL, now I never skip having a healthy breakfast. I just need to exercise more frequently.
Hey, I did go get my lab work done today. Should know some results tomorrow, after I go to the website..they're usually ready the next day, except the T3 might take a bit longer. I have this scary feeling they are going to be okay...and this fatigue is from depression, or something else. I know I need to work harder on that too. When you mentioned biking, I thought, hmmm. maybe I might (try) to give that a shot too [again]...see if I can still do it! I have a great mountain bike hanging out there in the garage, but it's been so long I've riden it. My hubby put new tires on it a few yrs back but I was too ill, (while adjusting my thyroid) to even go around the block. I think I could do it now, and I always did enjoy riding a bike. That sounds great, MJ! Thanks for giving me that idea... By the way, I keep meaning to ask you,...do you love mangos..is that why you are mangojunky? I love them too. And Kiwi..
Anyway, you have a nice week, and keep up the good work. I will be back in a few.

Hello Deda
Thanks for being an inspiration  Quitting sometimes feels like a long journey and one in which you don't know when you are going to arrive at your destination.
As for cycling, it's the best exersize for lazy people like me because you can sit down while getting fit!! So dust off your bike and just go for it. Bikes make great shopping trollies too. I am trying to do all my shopping on my bike + a 20 mile trip with a club each week but to start with I just did a couple of miles a day and have slowly built it up. Better still it's addictive and after a couple of hours cycling you have definitely earned some chocolate to refuel your muscles.
Please keep inspiring us all :)

Deda- like True Brit says - dust off that bike! I would be riding, but it's not quite warm enough! It does get easier day by day and I hope you feel better day by day - Sounds like you are taking good care of youself eating-wise. I bet that more exercise would help.
Thanks so much for your posts - they truly help. It's been a wonderful experience coming here daily, and I'm grateful to have such sincere support from people I don't even know!
True Brit - how are you feeling today? Did you get another bike ride in?
Have you been stocking up on chocolate? I have been treating myself to chocolate covered almonds....YUM! :D

Thank you, True Brit! :) I hope I can help inspire a few poor souls around here, give up what they think is a hopeless habit. (As I used to too, until I myself was inspired by others on this board) Try to give back a little, as I'm sure you guys will do the same after we pass the torch on to you...I plan to come back here, indefinitely, because I get real excited seeing people give up this son of a gun habit.
I'm laughing at what you said abuot us lazy people, how biking is good for us cuz we can "sit" while we exercise....too funny, yet so true!! :p It also remeinded me, (duh!), that I also have a "recumbant" exercise bikes in the garage, (alnog with a Healthrider, newish treadmill, incline bench, etc. [I have a whole little fitness center out there, just waiting to be dusted off and used] ) LOL Anyway, yep, maybe later today I'll get on that recumbant bike and take a spin. I have back problems, and those type of bikes are suppposed to be easy on your back. Thank you for planting the seed in my mind, and to mangojunky too! I have a daughter that is an avid athlete and she is always telling me to start biking. she is on the pro biking curcuit over there in N. C., and boy...what I'd do to have a tush like hers! ;) Of course she bikes many, many miles a week...but it is time to do something...at least to make an effort.
Thanks for your post girl, and have a super great day...non smoking, of course. (hey, it goes without saying anymore huh?) God bless...

Hey there mangojunky--
How are you doing today?? And you're welcome for the posts--and THANK YOU for your posts too sweet girl. :)
Today I'm feeling just like I have been lately, dragging my butt around, trying so hard to wake up today. I just want to roll up in a ball with my favorite blankie, (I'm cold and it's so warm outside), but I have an appt. with my shrink at 4:30. Plus have other errands to run. Usuallt once I get out of here, I perk up and feel a bit more energy...like last weekend.
Oh, here's the news on my thyroid results...I was online at 4:30 A.M. when it popped up on my screen....and my levels came in, ...all except for mt T3 test results. (I'll check there in a minute...should be there now) Anyway, sure enough I was right,....my Tsh was 3.6, which is definitely hypo for me! No wonder I have been callling all of my frineds by the wrong names, freezing on warm days, dragging, painful tingles, hair falling, cry over anything and everything....etc. Such a slight decrese in levels, but so many lousy symptoms. Glad I causgt it before it got worse. When I go to see my shrink today, I will leave a note for my endo over there, asking for an increase to 137 mcg's. I just hate going through 6 weeks of the not so nice effects of starting an increae. I tend to get crabby, and feel some lousy effects until it balances out. But 6 weeks from now it will be good. :) So at least I can look forward to that. Hopefully by my birthday, (4-15) I'll feel good, cuz we are supposed to go up to Lake Tahoe for the weekend and have some fun.
I really think all of us on this board could so benefit from daily exersise expecially since our metabolisms do slow down so much after we quit smoking, not to mention how it does wonders for our mental states. I hope it warms up soon for you mangojunky so you can start up. We'll all have to start an exercise thread on here, and check in and tell each other how we're all doing,...just to help inspire others and keep the motivation alive! :D
Have an awesome day, MJ, you deserve it!
Love,
Deda

Deda,
You said "Glad I caught it before it got worse."
You'll be feeling much better before you know it.
Wished I still knew how to ride a bicycle. I can't get the balance right. I look like a drunk on one. But at least I can walk straight!! I'm walking 2 miles in 30 minutes twice a day. When the weather is bad I'm on the air walker for 30 minutes twice a day. Makes me feel so much better.
Deda, you truly are an inspiration on here. We all aspire to be where you are.

Hi Deda,
I must admit - when I start noticing more symptoms, I hope my numbers are high, just so I know what is causing it. I do know that my memory is not what is used to me. Nor are my energy levels. Maybe smoking is partly to blame for my energy, since it deprived my body of oxygen. All is know is that I am in more control of my health right now than I have been in a long time and YES! I am trying to take better care of myself :) It’s almost like I think I can, now that I am not feeling like a hypocrite. I have started eating better, and taking supplements. I am even trying to take better care of my skin. The gym has been a part of my life for a while now, but I am ready to take on more cardio – since my lungs will be able to handle it.
When I had my massage on Tue, my therapist told me that people who quit smoking sometimes “release” on the table – I was wondering if I was going to start sobbing, since I have been emotional lately. I ended up laughing more than anything. He is wonderful! I do find, that it is at the gym in my strength training class that I feel like I am going to cry – when the class is at it’s most intense. Odd.
I KNOW you are on the road to feeling better. I’m sorry that it will take awhile for your body to adjust, but at least hope is in sight. Keep eating well, and get on that bike!!
I think a thread for us gals and guys who want to support each other in exercise and eating well would be great! Thankfully I have an exercise buddy at work – we normally go to class together. It’s great motivation.
Have a great FREE day!

Deb,
You are so right about having an exersise thread to support each other because it really does help with those anxious moments.
This morning, early, I joined my Dad for a bike ride. We did about 10 miles BUT, he had to wait for me at the top of every hill. This would be fine and dandy except he is 82 years old. He quit cigars at 75 because he thought they might shorten his life.:dizzy:

Congratulations Black Widow!!! Four days already?!?!?!
That is awesome!!!
This is quite honestly one of the very best things you can do for yourself - and you're off to a terrific start. I'll bet you sure are proud of yourself. You should be. Quitting this addiction is one of the hardest accomplishments.
You did it!!! You did it!!!

Deda,
An air walker
Combines aerobic and stretching training exercises in one low impact, calorie burning machine. The Air Walker features a dual action design that allows you to go from a slow gliding walk to a full gliding run in one fluid motion.
It provids a low impact, high intensity cardio workout. The Air Walker helps you in increasing your fitness levels and burning unwanted calories.
It is designed to provide an intensive fitness regime with virtually no impact or stress to the joints, the design allows you to focus on toning the hips, thighs and buttocks.
Check it out on the web. It's easy, but boring!! I put on the Four Tops or maybe Roy Orbison or even some Beach Boys (I love the old groups!) to help pass the time and keep my rhythm.
I don't think I want the job as President!! :nono: Thank you anyway. Sounds like too much work!! I will be head cheerleader though!! :jester:
Warm weather is getting here and hopefully we will be able to get out and go fishing pretty soon. I love to crappie fish!!!:D As soon as the dogwoods start blooming, the crappie are spawning. Maybe in a week or so. Right now, the daffodils, Japanese Magnolia trees, the Bradford Pear trees, the forsythia (yellow bell bush), just everything is blooming out so pretty!! The trees are getting green. We've had above average temps lately. High 70's. I love it!! I've been walking different streets when I go out now so I can see everyone's yards. But I think the next couple of days are suppose to be back in the 60's again.
Thanks for all the kind words. I just come here for therapy. It helps me to help others. I guess when I feel more confident in my quit, I may slack up some. But right now, I'm enjoying this. All the people here really seem like "friends." We've gone through something very personal together. I mean we talk about constipation for goodness sake!! I haven't "met" anyone here that wasn't nice. It is a great bunch of people!!
And thank you for all the work you've done on this board!  You've been leading people to quit smoking for years now!! We all owe you a big thank you.
