View Full Version : Gum graft shifting?

I had a gum graft on one of my bottom front teeth, and I think it may have shifted. I took vicodin the first day and threw up. I don't know if that did it or brushing my teeth or talking or opening my mouth to eat. I don't know how they expect you to keep in in place when it's right at the front. Every time you talk or open your mouth, it feels like it moves. I can't just sit still for 3 weeks and not eat or talk to anyone. Anyone else have any problems?

It sounds like I had my graft in the same place you did. It had to be redone, but I'm not sure it was b/c it shifted. It just never really took like it should have. Was you graft covered with putty stuff when you first had it done? Mine were covered for the first week while the stitches were still in. After a week I went back and the putty and the stitches were removed. For the second week I was only allowed to massage the graft area with a q'tip to give it time to heal. Does any of this sound like what you had to do? I wasn't concerned about it for the first week b/c it was covered. After the putty came off I was a little cautious with it just b/c I didn't know how strong it was. I can kinda see how it might have shifted if it wasn't covered so it could start to heal.

I don't know if it was covered or not. I didn't see it after the surgery. I'm only guessing it did because I took a small peek while brushing my teeth the second day, and it looked good, but today I could see more of the tooth. I must have the dissovling stitches because I don't go back to the periodontist for 3 weeks. He never really gave instructions on what to do past the first day. I don't know if calling him would do any good since, in order for him to see it, he'd have to pull out my lip and that might mess it up.

Did you have to pay for it again when it didn't take?

When I say covered with putty.....you would know it. Mine was covered with putty that looked kinda like bubble gum. It covered the entire tooth that was grafted plus a couple teeth on each side. It was visible when I talked even. The same putty was used to cover the donor site. When I had the front tooth grafted, I also had a frenectomy where they cut the thing that is attached to your gum and lip. That made it so my lip wasn't pulling on the gums. Because of the putty I was not able to brush anywhere near the graft until the second week. But then I had to be careful brushing the teeth near the graft and just use a q'tip on that tooth and gum. I was told not even to get toothpaste on the new graft b/c it was too abrasive. That was a little tough and I'm sure I did get toothpaste on it. I just used the q'tip to clean the area. I don't think it would hurt to call the periodontist especially since you don't see him for 3 weeks. Four weeks after I had mine done, three weeks after the stitches came out, I went back for a checkup and he told me that from that point on, I couldn't hurt it by what I was doing, like brushing and flossing, but I could only hurt it by what I wasn't doing. I thought that was pretty well put! And I did not have to pay for it to be redone. That made me think it wasn't my fault that it didn't work. Cause if it was something I had done, I'm sure I would have paid for it!

I don't think he put any putty on it then. The inside of my mouth is swollen though, the inside of my lips have indents where my teeth are. I guess that's normal. I probably should have seen what he did after the surgery, but there was some blood and I'm very squeamish, so I didn't want to. I may give him a call and mention getting sick the first day and see if they think that may have done any damage.

I didn't see what mine looked like after surgery either. I really wanted to see what the stitches looked like but it was covered with the putty so I couldn't! Hopefully the periodontist will answer some of your questions. Let me know how you make out!
