hi i am new. i had some back, side and abdominal pain a couple of weeks ago along with severe naussea. went to the ER 1st time & after a cat scan they said it was a 6mm stone suck in the left side ureter just before the bladder. and i also had a 1mm stone in my right kidney.

they sent me home with meds, but went back two days later in even more pain. had what was supposed to be emergency procedure to use a laser to blow it up, but the stone was just outside of the kidney not the bladder and instead they stuck a stent in there even though i was passing urine anyway.

i've since gone back for a KUB x-ray. the doc wants me to have lithotripsy (sp?) and waiting on when that will happen. then a week after that i am to have my stent out (i wish it was like two days later!)

anyway, how painful is the lithotripsy procedure?

how painful is the stent removal?

i have to admit that i am a afraid of this all and what it might mean...but i don't want to feed that fear with guessing game sin my mind.

also, i have broken my nose three times, broken and dislocated all of my ten digits, hyper-extended my right elbow, and fractured my knee cap and partially torn my ACL all in sports injuries and what not from the time i was 8years old (i'm 34 now). and i have never, and i mean never, had pain like i did with this stone stuck in my ureter! at its height i honestly wanted someone to simply shoot me...i was praying for it to pass or for the Lord to take me...it was that painful. i see by the above posts it is that way for most everyone with a kidney/ureter stone. :(

is there a light at the end of the tunnel???

Hi:

I'm sorry you're dealing with kidney stones too. The Lithotripsy isn't bad b/c you're asleep when you have it. I never had pain afterwards either. As far as the stent removal, I can't advise you since I'm a woman, but for me, it was only a little embarrassing when the male Dr. removed it in his office. It wasn't painful. Good luck with your Lithotripsy and stent. Write back afterwards and we can compare stories. Only other kidney pain sufferers understand how horrific the pain is. Sue

My 9yo daughter (yes, 9yo) had a stone stuck in her ureter and had a laser lithotripsy done last year. It was outpatient procedure, had general anesthesia, and came home with a stent in place. She said she felt ok but the stent was bothersome. She stayed home from home school for 1 week and when the stent was removed, she felt much better walking. (she walked like she just got off a horse while it was in)

Good Luck.

thank you everyone and i do feel your pain...

sadly, i was rejected for lithotripisy by the big kidney centere here in Denver, which medically i was OK'd for the procedure, but the next day the financial review rejected me because of insurance, which then made them do another medical review at which point i was rejected for "medical" reasons - yeah right!

so the doc said i will have to have a ureteroscopy instead, which i don't know why we couldn't have done that the first time when they did the emergency procedure to put it in, which was supposed to be the ureteroscopy in the first place! URGH!!!

anyway i am having the ureteroscopy in about 3 hours. i report to the hospital in about an hour and a half. they are going to leave the stent in for another week after the surgery, so it can "properly drain" with no damage, which if that's true that is great...i can deal with the small pain and terrible discomfort from the stent if it prevents the terrible pain of the stone.

so, does anyone have ideas on how that is supposed to be for recovery and ease of pain etc? any personal experiences with it?

i don't like meds, so i am trying not to use the narcotics they gave; in fact i wish they'd give me back the Toridol, as that was the most pain free i felt during this whole thing and it isn't a narcotic! but, i could only use it that one time they said and not now as it thins the blood and they don't want that because of the procedure today.

is it difficult to pass the fragments of the stone? or are they less painful than the 6mm stone that was trying to get passed but was stuck in the ureter?

all very frustrating, so i feel for everyone here who has had this problem! misery does love company. ;)

Hello Donn!
I was there too!.......My Doctor who is a Nephrologist, gave me some medication for the pain and adviced me to drink green coconut water, one glass every hour about 8 oz. for 13 days if you can't get the green coconuts water then you have to go with distilled water mixed with aloe vera or sabila juices 75% distilled water and 25% aloe vera juice, do not drink pop sodas, no chocolates, no nuts, no tomatoes, no eggplant, no bananas, no fruits with small seeds, get a strainer and a coffee filter and urinete there or white container so you can see the small stones passing, i know how much you suffered because i experinced myself i felt like dying was sweeter than that intense pain, Donn! Don't drink water from the faucet, regardless of how good is your water filter, distilled water is a blessing for us.

I saw my stone passing on 9th days one was as big as a shirt botton and the other one was as big as lentil, then the third one was as big as rice grain, and many small one like sand.
Good luck to you Donn, don't worry about it you will pass all of them, is good that you keep a sample and have it analize and see what's in it in order to avoid eating that in the future.

The toradol is a blessing in disguise but most insurance cos will only pay for a 10 day dose as it can cause ulcers. Good luck with the procedure and let us know how you made out!
