Hi, this is my first posting, and I wondered if anyone had any advice. I injured my ankle a year ago; I felt a burning searing pain, and it was weeks before that was relieved. I have been for physio because the ankle still swells and is tender; not the bone, the soft tissue at the back of the ankle bone. Physiotherapist tells me it is more than likely an injury caused because of a fallen arch and has recommended arch support and a wedge. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this. I suspect that the injury is unusual. GP didnt say much; just said she would send me for physio. Hmmm...hate the thought of this for the rest of my life....yeuk.

Hi,

I have the same problem in my right foot, however I never injured it. My arch has slowly dropped over the years and my ankle is all deformed looking. In fact, if I walk barefoot on a smooth surface, my foot acts/sounds like a suction cup <LOL> I've had horrible bouts of pain & swelling all around my ankle area. When the swelling first started many years ago, I had insurance so my treatments and imaging options were extremely limited. I've had many orthotics, anti-inflammatories, steroid injections, tens therapy, etc...but nothing helped. Then all of a sudden the pain & swelling would go away on it's own, but has flared up many times over the years. (however, i have other joints that have flared up as well). But now I have to walk with my right foot pointing outward because if I walk straight, I cant bend or put weight on myfoot due to pain. I have pain on the inside ankle, top of foot, outside foot & ankle, and now pain in my upper heel area. So walking with my foot out is more comfortable. And recently i'm getting some swelling again. I did go to a foot doctor upon my PT's request 6 weeks ago and told him all this. He told me it looks like I have stage 3 posterior tibial tendon dysfunction...all the tendons & ligaments are completely stretched out, and I may have tears or even a tendon that's completely seperated. He said he needed an MRI to be sure of the exact extent of it....however I still havent had my MRI. Approval thru insurance usually only took 5-10 days in the past for other things, never 6 weeks. The doc office just said they will call me whether it's approved or denied. So I am still at a loss as to whats causing this for me. The foot doc, my PT, my spine & hip doctors all said my muscle& tendon problems coudl be due to my lupus.

Anyway, I do know that orthotics and physical therapies are usually standard treatments to try to help with fallen arches, but if you had an injury that tore something, that would probably have to heal first. I would say do whatever you can to take care of it, otherwise you may end up with all sorts of other problems with your knees, hips, and/or back.

Thanks a lot for your quick response! Much appreciated. Sorry you have had all those problems. It sounds grim! I may well need to get a scan just to check the damage. I suspect the ligaments or tendons may be involved in the original injury.
