Hi there, I have been 15 days without chewing tobacco. I have felt terrible since I quit. Not being able to sleep at night, feeling sick, etc. Also, I have been getting really warm cheeks over the last couple days. They don't really turn red but they are definately really warm. Does anyone know if this is a withdrawl symptom or not? Lucky for me I have a loving fiancee that has been supporting me over the last 2 weeks. I have been a total handful for her. For others quitting smoking or chewing, please find someone to lean on in this tough time. It helps greatly!

Hey Jeff!

Way to go! Warm cheeks, that sounds like maybe you're getting a "hot flash" - lol. Just kidding, don't know what that could be from, as long as you're not getting heart palpatations, or feeling dizzy or passing out, it's probably just a rush of some sort, maybe from nicotime withdrawls? I'm glad you're fiancee is helping you out, that is a huge help! My husband and I are quitting together and it makes a world of difference to have the support!

Good luck to you - 15 days is awesome!! :blob_fire

Congratulations on your quit Jeff!!!

I really don't know what it's like to quit chewing tobacco. I smoked it for way too long before I quit last month. However it's just another way of consuming nicotine.

It sounds like you are experiencing withdrawal from nicotine. The symptoms are as follows:

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms:

Irritability, mood swings, restlessness, insomnia, fatigue, inability to concentrate, sore throat, cough, congestion, headache, increased appetite constipation, gas, stomach pain, dry mouth, sore tongue/gums , postnasal drip, tightness in the chest.

You might find it helpful to drink lots of water and fruit juices. They help wash the nicotine from you system while regulating your sugar levels. These should pass in a short time.

Good luck to you !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff,
Refresh my memory. Are you going cold turkey? or are you using a nicotine replacement? If I remember correctly, it's cold turkey. I'm not sure what the flushing that you described if from. That is a side effect of the nicotine replacement therapy. The other stuff if normal nicotine withdrawal. Drink plenty of fluids to flush the poisons out of your body as quickly as possible.

You are doing a super job!! 15 days is terrific!! I'm so glad you've got someone to help you through this. It does help. I don't know what I would have done if it wasn't for my husband's and my family's support. I didn't know this message board existed. Although we don't "know" each other personally here, we are a family of sorts. We want very much to see each person succeed in quitting smoking or in your case, chewing tobacco.

Keep posting and let us know how everything is going.

Thanks for all your responses and yes, I did quit cold turkey so the warm/flushed feeling in my face is not from any nicotine replacement or anything. I think it's just the stress. I am constantly worrying over my health now and I keep thinking that I must have cancer or something like that. There isn't really any reason for me to believe that but I can't get it out of my head. I think it's more of a health anxiety thing but it really bugs me. Any suggestions on what to do about that?

Jeff - keep up the great work!

Have you been exercising? Are you up for trying yoga, or at least some deep breathing techniques?

I have found exercise and yoga to be key to keeping me in good mental health - great stress reducers.

I know what's it's like to stress about what you have done to your body, but try and focus on the good you are doing, and the healing that is/will take place. Once you are feeling better, make a doctor's appointment and talk to them about your concerns.

hope you are feeling better daily!

Well, I am feeling better in general and have a doctor's appointment in a couple days and a dentist appointment next week, since chewing affects the mouth a lot. I hope that after those I will lose some of this stress from health anxiety. I just can't seem to think that there is nothing wrong with me. I mean, I only chewed for about 6 or 7 years so it wasn't a really long time but it's bugging me a lot now. Thanks for your response!
