Dear Grasshopper,
I have been referring to the threads and posts of all, on a daily basis.
I had an upper EMG completed a week ago and have been diagnosed with peripheral motor neuropathy. I also went for a lumbar epidural which made both of my legs weaker.
I see the orthopaedic surgeon this morning.
I just need some answers.
Thanks for the thread, my friend.
Dear Sid,
Thanks for the cyber "hugs" I needed those.
Take care

thanks FTM for the update. I am not glad about your dx but it is treatable. Thanks the Lord. When i had the lumbar epidurals they always made my legs weaker for a time. also i couldn't use the bathroom because I felt i had numb muscles and no push if you get my drift.
Be well my friend. You have a long journey ahead of you. but remembe ryou won't be taking it alone.
Peace,
Grasshopper

FTM,
When I had my Epidurals, the ting I hated was laying down for 8 hrs after. I have a hard time staying put...But I didn't have the weakness. Could be the location too. Mine was L5
Have they put you on any Meds for the neuropathy????? The little boy that I know that is dying from CF.... He got neuropathy from Anti biotics. His feet hurt so bad at one time he could hardly walk. But the meds have calmed it down almost 100%....
Hang in there, this too shall pass.

Dear Grasshopper and Sid,
I am taking Lyrica,Celebrex,Skelaxin and Vicodin.
I went to the orthopaedic surgeon yesterday and where the latest upper extremity exam stated "motor" nerves, he wrote over it, "sensory."
Then he proceeds to tell me that this is what the physiatrist wrote.
Little did he know, I went down to the office last week and picked up a copy of the report.
I didn't let on that I knew otherwise.
Then he states that I should go for six more weeks of PT, which is located in his office.
I am going to see my neuro/orthopaedic surgeon on Friday.
Yesterday's appointment was disappointing, to say the least.
Take care
God Bless

FTM,
I know that Lyrica is the new drug of choice, but have you ever tried Neurotin for your Neuropathy????

FTM ---- Lyrica is the new drug of choice for neuropathy BUT some have better luck with neurontin. Celebrex..... watch your belly. Skelaxin---muscle relaxer, will work for a time, massage adds to the effect. Vicodin.... you know the drill. Depending on what they are doing to you in PT it could help or hurt more. hubby an di have found that with the nerves involved that heat, ice, stimulation, massage and MILD stretching of the muscles to get them off the nerves has been the most beneficial. I hear in your words that since PT is in this Dr.s office you are believing it's the more money issue?????? please explain the difference in motor and sensory nerves. I am clueless as to the difference.

Dear Grasshopper,
sensory nerves gather information of the environment and send it to the brain while the motor nerves tell muscles to move.

FTM --- I then don't understand in your situation why anyone would not see that the motor nerves are what's causing the problem. If you have no strength in your arms and legs isn't that motor? sensory nerves to me would be more at the time of injury. the reflex sensation of clenching up since your body senses dange. did I get it? what exactly are they doing to you in PT? neck/lumbar and just what are they doing?

Dear Grasshopper,
They put on the heating pad with the electric stimulation, then ultrasound neck massage and have me do stretches that I can do at home; the machines are impossible for me to handle at this juncture.

FTM --- that's the reason I asked. I stopped all machines because it did more damage. my PT thank God wants nothing done that adds to the pain. I have not had ultrasound yet but had it on my knee years ago and loved it. the routine on my neck for the past 2 months ( I have stopped all PT on the other injured body parts) is mild stretches which I can do at home and do, then heat and stim, then some traction (by hand) and a massage. The PT last week decided since i also ahve a shoulder injury to expand the massage into my shoulder. She hit a spot that made me cringe and brought me to tears. the more she dug the more I cried. the first time that ever happened to me. Never felt pain like that before. They are sending a note to my ortho who I see monday telling him they believe that besides the obvious neck/shoulder injury that and the fact that all know I have bicipital tendonitis that possible the bicep tendon is torn away from my collar bone and bicep. something is horrible wrong in this area and what I noticed is that when she hit the spot it is exactly where the pain is when i use my arm. I believe it is preventing my neck from holding onto the therapy. when I move my arm I flinch my neck because of the pain. FTM I have been to 5 Dr.s and had every test imaginable done. 4 PT facilities and just finding more out after 10 months. I'm sorry i promised no more long post sand here I went. sorry!

Dear Grasshopper,
I need to see a new pain management doctor.
I just received a copy of my reports and he wrote that I responded well to the injections, which is an out and out lie. The last injection that he performed(lumbar) made my leg worse. His assistant called the next day and I told him that I was worse, yet on his report it states that I felt good relief.
The same thing on my median nerve blocks.
I am going to report this to my neurosurgeon tomorrow.
...............and here I am, putting my trust in yet another individual, with negative results.
Take care
God Bless

You know what FTM --- the medical profession is sometimes as bad as our legal system and insurance industry. All we have both had the misfortune of having to deal with on a daily basis. I have changed PT and Dr.s until I found the help and answers I needed. Not what I WANTED to hear but needed to know. Those lumbar injections are a nuisance sometimes. My first one many years ago I had the same reaction to. Couldn't move my legs at all, go to the bathroom. the pain was horrible and when I called they told me it was all normal.:dizzy: Lasted about 2 weeks and then I had 2 more injections and finally a blood patch because they hit my spine. Finally after my 4th and an injection in the Sacroid joint I found relief but i will tell you it took 18 months and alot of therapy. Is there a pool with warm water in your area you can go walk in? I did this recently and had my greatest relief and my legs felt stronger. Nothing heavy duty. just normal walking for about 30 minutes back and forth. My legs didn't feel like they weighed in at 900# each when I was done. The PT stopped me from this and off course I can't walk again. As soon as the weather changes a little I am going somewhere on my own. Feel better and keep me posted. I would make all liars known.
Hugs,
Grasshopper
