Andrea,
Welcome!
Are you almost through with the first month? Or are you almost through with the white pills? When is your quit date?
Unfortunately depression is a symptom of nicotine withdrawal. It shouldn't last more than a week or two. The Chantix helps with the withdrawal but you have to work on the "habit" part. You know, like when you have your coffee or when you talk on the phone, or when you get in the car. Or whatever triggers you have that make you want to light up. Be aware of them and change your routine if possible. Keep some fruit or hard candy (sugarfree) or cinnamon sticks handy for when the cravings hit. I ate sunflower and pumpkin seeds like crazy. Also peanuts, but not so often. I used them for the "breaks" I took.
Good Luck to you!!
Trish,
Girl you're doing good!!! Keep it up. I think I've talked to one person who was on the Chantix longer than the 12 weeks. They just felt they needed it. My doctor told me he would give me another month supply if I felt like I needed it. But he wanted me to stop after the 12 week course and see how I did before he did that. I had no trouble whatsoever. I've told you how I tapered off the Chantix. That's all I did. I probably didn't even need to do that. But I have a hard time coming off meds a lot of the time. I know you and True Brit are worried about what is going to happen when you stop taking the Chantix. Don't.! There is nothing to worry about. You don't start craving cigarettes again. You are no more tempted to smoke than when you were taking the Chantix. You still have "thoughts" of smoking, but they are still controllable. It's amazing to me.

Welcome Rhonda,
I'm so glad you could join us here. Congratulations on your decision to become a non smoker!! Wonderful decision. I'm so glad the side effects aren't very bad for you. Most people can tolerate them pretty well. You are gonna find some wonderful people here! Now just remember Smoking is no longer an option. And no more puffs off someone else's cigarette. I know I can never take one puff. If I do, I'll be back smoking 1 to 2 packs a day again. This is not an addiction you can take or leave. You have got to leave the alone for good!! Good Luck to you!!
True Brit,
You have done so good in your quit!! Your positive attitude had a lot to do with it. Congratulations on 9 weeks!! Wonderful!!
When you get ready to start tapering off the Chantix, go to the pharmacy and buy a pill splitter. They don't cost much. Makes cutting the pills a breeze.
Life after Chantix is wonderful!! Thanks for inspiring us all.
Kevin,
Hey man! You rock!! 4 weeks without that ole nasty smelling cigarette is wonderful!! You are doing such a good job of inspiring others here.
Congratulations!!
You know, ya'll are all doing so well in your quit. I love the way you encourage each other and cheer each other on. Ya'll are a terrific group!! I'm so proud that ya'll let me be a part of this.

14 days today:blob_fire If you feel this good at 14 days be prepared to feel even better. We'll have to nail your feet to the floor soon. It's not only feeling more energetic that's so great but also how quickly you recover after exersise. I now cycle at least 10 miles 3 times per week in hilly country. Sadly being a non smoker does not prevent saddle soreness:rolleyes:

It's so great that you stick around to support us all. I aim to take my last Chantix (or half Chantix) 26th March. Will keep you all updated.
I may be the only person alive who quit smoking on the first days of meds as it made me feel too sick to smoke. After that the nausea went away. I only took one of the white tabs, quit, and then went straight onto the blue tabs for extra support. Plan to use remaining white tabs in 3 weeks time. ;)

Thanks for the tip about pill splitters Memaw. Brilliant idea. Hope they exist here in the UK. Nice to see you back:wave:

Hi All
Don't worry!! I will keep you all informed every inch of the way re reducing Chantix. I am not worried about cravings because if they get too bad it will be possible to increase the dose again for a while. My real worry is getting the waves of depression that I experienced the day I forgot to take my pm Chantix. That's what happened in the past trying to get off nicotine replacement. I might try to saw off 25% of the tabs to start with, then 50%, then 75%. As regards continuing for 24 weeks I think it would be a last resort as finishing Chantix will, I hope, be like finally being free to forget all about cigs and related subjects and getting on with life as a non smoker.[/
Don't forget all recent quitters, feeling tired and down in the dumps are normal symptoms of nicotine withdrawal and should improve slowly over a couple of weeks. Whatever, you don't need to suffer alone. There are plenty
of symathetic shoulders to cry on here and we really do know just how you feel.:D
True Brit,
In your last post you said you were going to begin reducing your dosage and also mentioned problems when you forgot to take a dose. In 47 days, I forgot only two doses. Both in the pm and neither caused a problem. I will start my third month (actually ninth week I guess) Wed 2/28 and plan to cut out the pm dose for at least four weeks and see what happens. If it creates a problem I will probably go back to the normal twice a day for a bit longer.
Please let me know how your schedule of cutting back goes and I will do the same. By the way when do you start cutting back? If you will, please post your reply to "Chantix: What comes next." Thanks.

Hi All: First of all, does anyone know what happened to our other Board....I went to it and it was marked "closed". I don't understand.
Thank all of you for the positive reinforcement. I wanna tell you this: in mid January, I fell off a desk and cracked a rib. I'm an avid exerciser (Body Pump and Body Step 5 to 6 times a week.) Because of the injury, I've been away from exercise for 6 weeks. Went back on Sunday (Body Pump) for the first time and did another Body Pump on Monday. Today I did Body Step. As dumb as I know this is, the first thing I always did after exercise was to light up a cigarette. (How dumb was that?!?) Anyway, after Sunday' and Monday's Body Pump, no problem with no smoking. However, after Body Step this afternoon, I wanted --CRAVED -- a cigarette more than I have since having quit....and it's been 2 weeks. Even during the class, I was missing not being able to smoke on the way home. I have absolutely NO idea why I wanted to smoke so badly. I didn't, of course, and wouldn't have even if I had one. And I'm in a really bad mood now because of it. It's just inexplicable....to me, anyway. Do any of you have any thoughts about why today had such an effect on me?
Meemaw: It's so good to see you back!! -- I missed ya. Someone said you'd had a death in your family. I'm sorry.
Thanks for listening!

Hi Trish M&M,
I am on day 5 of my quit, but I am also very active. I swim about 3-4 miles per week, quit last Friday and swam on Saturday. I kind of felt the same way afterwards, and of course it went away, but I used to dry off, get dressed, get in the car and smoke all the way home. Why bother exercising, but that's how it went.
Today I went shopping, and the first thing I do is smoke when I leave. I felt kind of funny today about that and realized I probably have to do everything at least once without a cigarette, like talk on phone, go out back, drive car, shop, etc. because I smoked before or after every activity that I did. I'm glad the urge passed and I wouldn't worry about it.
I have been quit for 4 Days, 22 hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds (4 days). I have saved $20.67 by not smoking 137 cigarettes. I have saved 11 hours and 25 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 2/22/2007 9:00 PM

I was in Macy's for about an hour, no problem... when I went to exit Macy's and walk thru the mall (it was an indoor one) somewhere the thought came to me that I needed to go outside first to have a cig before going thru the mall... it was a wierd craving, it threw me, and lasted longer than my usual split second cravings.

Tampaquit and Traveller: Funny how old habits die hard, or whatever that saying is. I just got back from investment club meeting, and the house is empty and I usually run out back and have a smoke. Well, guess what! I can't do that anymore!! So now I run immediately to my computer to get on this message board! I'm kind of addicted to it - is that a bad thing? It's way better than smoking!
Congrats on your 4 day mark Tampa! I'm hanging in there - right behind you with 3, no wait, 4 days under my belt!!

About the strong craving.....it happens. But the more you do something without smoking, the easier it gets. Don't let it put you in a bad mood.:nono: Just rejoice in the fact that you were able to resist it. Think "I had a really bad craving today and I won!!" Put a positive spin to it.
Thanks you for the expression of sympathy. I appreciate that.
Trish, you are doing really good. :bouncing: Keep it up!

First day of March and spring is on the way:blob_fire If quitting gets easier every day then it will get even easier even quicker when the sun is shining and the daffodils are dancing.
Today I was driving from London to the South coast with someone who quit 5years ago. When I asked him what his withdrawal symptoms were like he said he couldn't remember and he doesn't understand any more why he ever needed to smoke. I CAN'T WAIT TO FEEL THAT WAY.:dizzy:

It's interesting to read these posts. Sometimes I find myself waking up and thinking to myself "I think I'll have a cigarette" - or I'll plan on having one when I get into the car to run an errand. It's not a physical craving, just a thought. I usually shake my head "no" and go about my business.
I wonder/think that I will be fighting this the rest of my life, but I know now that I am strong enough to be free once and for all.

Deb, I hear ya sister, and I know what you mean. I cleaned the house last night and was all out of breath, and thought, I could sure use a smoke right now. I'm outta breath, and I need a smoke? It's funny, but I read another post about someone exercising and that's the first thing they'd do after hitting the gym was to have a smoke. Well, I can relate to that? Mowing the grass, dying in the hot Florida sun, yeah, gimme something hot and on fire to suck on! It's the addiction or the habit or the reward system I guess!! But no more!! I'm on my 6th day and it's getting better and better. And I'm not crying anymore!! Glad that only lasted a couple of days! I just hope when I get off the Chantix, I don't fall into a deep depression, cuz then I'll have to switch boards and you guys will have to come find me!!

I'm so glad you are feeling better. I know you'll be fine when it's finally time to say adios to chantix. I have cut my dose in half, and am sleeping better. I feel ok too. Just make sure you are exercising to get those endorphins!

Hey All: Good to read what everyone has had to say. Today is 16 for me smoke free and things are going really well. That one bad craving I had after exercise the other day hasn't happened again (or before, for that matter).
I do have a question: has anyone experienced edema while on Chantix. I read that it's a frequent side effect. Beginning yesterday, my feet, ankles and lower limbs started swelling. It's pretty uncomfortable. I drank a lot of water today and peed right much, but drinking the water didn't help at all w/ the edema. I took a diuretic when I got home about 2:30. I reckon I'll be up half the night...running to the bathroom. I've been on the Chantix since 2/7/07....seems like a rather long time to be having a side effect. What do you all think?
I have another question: can someone tell me how I start a new topic?
And one more question: is there a particular Board where you guys are posting most of the time? I wanna catch up w/ you all on a daily basis.
Thanks!

Hi Trish! Wow, you are in your third week as a non smoker. How cool is that! Congratulations and I'm glad you haven't had the cravings again. But I think you sent them to my house, as earlier this afternoon I was having a time. As far as your edema, I did read another post where someone had it pretty bad. But, if it were me? I would just give your doctor a call and let them know. The med is processed through the kidneys, not the liver, and you want to be sure there is nothing else going on. I don't remember what the other person did about it either.
To start a new post, on the top left, about a third of the way down is a button that says New Thread.
And I think everyone is just posting here, and you have to go into all the threads to see what everyone is doing because i sure don't want to miss anything!!!!:)

True Brit,
I can't wait to feel that way, too. Right now I still remember it all!!
And by the way, here in North Mississippi the daffodils and the tulip trees are blooming. Yesterday was 72 degrees. But next week we are liable to get snow!! You never can tell what the weather will do this time of year!!
Deb and Skimmer... aren't humans stupid sometimes? I did the same thing...exercise then smoke.
Trish..Doing good girl!! 16 days is wonderful!!!! Keep it up.
Some of the people taking the Chantix have complained about swelling. To tell you the truth, I don't know whether I had that or not. I am bad about eating too much salt (I LOVE the stuff!) and when I do my hands and feet swell. And I was eating sunflower seeds like crazy. So if I did have swelling, I wouldn't have known the source of it. But you do need to let your doctor know about it.
I'm all over the place on this board. Just find a place and start posting or start your own thread. Tampaquit told ya how to do that.
Tampaquit.....so glad you made it through the cravings. See how strong you are? Good going!!!!
