Hi
I just wanted to post on here my experience so far with Chantix for smoking cessation. I followed the instructions but didn't quit right away on the 8th day, I wanted to see if the medicine would work all by itself without any large amount of will power on my part. I was on the medication for 2 weeks when all of a sudden I woke up one day and had gone through the majority of the day without even thinking of a cigarette. I am now 7 days smoke free and it has been the easiest attempt I have ever made at quitting. I even have half a pack of cigarettes in my house and I haven't been tempted to smoke them. I am amazed at the results of this medication.
I also have a drinking problem and to my amazement this medication has also stopped my desire to drink ANY alcohol. I feel they need to research this drug for use in helping all kinds of addictions not just for nicotine addiction. I am also in a better mood since I was depressed before taking the medication as well. I think this has been my miracle in MANY MANY ways and I am feeling very grateful to have the ability to use it.
I have exeperienced several of the side effects but they are tollerable given the outcome. I have had insomnia, nausea, and some body aches as well as some headaches. It is important to eat something with it and drink the glass of water with it. I got lazy a few times and I paid for not following the instructions. Anyway by biggest hope for posting this was that they might research this medication for all kinds of addiction therapy, it has really changed my life and I can't even believe the idea of an alcoholic drink and a cigarette sounds like torture to me now instead of something I felt I could never life without before.
Good luck to all you quitters, I think this medicine is going to do wonderful things for many people.

Tina,
Congrats on being free of cigs!!!!! I too am amazed at how well chantix has worked. Today is day 8 for me, and for the most part, I have been in a good mood. The insomnia is what is killing me. I am going to cut back to 1 mg day in the morning to see if that helps. Nausea is gone, I have had a headache the past few days, but that could be from the lack of sleep.

Tina - great post! I agree, if they can get people to stop smoking that have smoked for 20, 30, even 50 yrs, the government should be offering it for free. Do you know how much money they would save in health care costs alone? I'm amazed it's working so well for me too. Side effects aren't too bad either.
Mangojunky - Congrats! 8 days SMOKE FREE - woo hoo! I'm almost to day 4 and feeling great.
I have been quit for 3 Days, 22 hours, 4 minutes and 47 seconds (3 days). I have saved $5.87 by not smoking 39 cigarettes. I have saved 3 hours and 15 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 2/23/2007 7:00 PM

Hi everyone! I'm so glad that I found this website. I am on day 7, and I am supposed to be a non-smoker tomorrow!! I am very nervous about how tomorrow will go, but I do feel a little better after reading about everyone's success! Congrats to all of you that quit!! I think the hardest part may be staying at my desk at work - I have gotten used to the frequent breaks!!!

Pinkdaisi - congrats on deciding to quit!! I thought my first day going back to work would be tough too, but then I didn't smoke at work, just 2 before and lots after. But I got thru the day, and then went straight to the store after work and changed my routine up. You need to find something to do to occupy your break time. Go visit a co-worker, call friend to chat on the phone, take a break and take a walk around the parking lot. Anything to make you not think about smoking. You can do it! I know you can!! You WILL be a non-smoker tomorrow. Just log on to this message board every day for your support. We are here for you!!
I have been quit for 4 Days, 4 hours, 3 minutes and 57 seconds (4 days). I have saved $6.25 by not smoking 41 cigarettes. I have saved 3 hours and 25 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 2/23/2007 7:00 PM

Hi Tina,
Welcome to you! Congratulations on being smoke free for 7 days. Awesome!!
I too kept an open pack a cigarettes around "just in case I needed one" for about a month. I never did.
I think it is wonderful the Chantix is working on your drinking problem as well as the nicotine addiction. I kept telling my husband that if the Chantix works so well on the area of the brain that keeps you from smoking, they should be able to target the areas of the brain that keeps you addicted to alcohol, or other drugs.
Stick around and let us know how you are doing. We're all here for you if you need us.
pinkdaisi,
Welcome to you!!
Glad you could join us. Isn't it exciting to think that you will soon be a non smoker!! How awesome is that? Why can't you take breaks away from you desk as a non smoker? Go get you some fruit and take a fruit break. Or a gum break like Traveller did. Just because you will no longer be smoking is no reason to give up going outside every so often. Let us know how it goes tomorrow!
Good Luck to you!!
Skimmer,
You are just doing sooo good!! I'm so proud of you!
4 days!! Congratulations!!
