I think I have experienced some odd ones and I'm being completely honest and hope I don't gross anyone out: (1) I've had periods of complete giddiness--you know you just can't control the laughter and it's embarrasing (I think that's a release of the anxiety/stress of quitting, (2) no gas or constipation but extremely hard stools (very painful) and thankfully it's only happened 3x and (3) a listed side effect, one of which a lot of people here seem to experience is headaches. Having had a daily headache for some time, once I quit they've stopped. I haven't even had a headache as part of a hangover. I think the most important thing is unless the side effect is having a major impact on your life stick with the Chantix. I hope this helps you out.

I cried the first couple of days and my husband has had the hard stool problem. I felt foggy the first couple of days, but nothing I couldn't live with. I'm doing great now!! Someone did post of a breathing or heart palpatation, and someone else had a rash - everyone reacts different to meds - so you just have to try it to see if it does anything to you. I didn't even feel them the 1st 6 or 7 days! And now, as long as take them with food, I get a mild tummy ache for about 3 mins, just a bit queasy, but not bad, and then it goes away. Like I said, it's no biggie for me - if I can quit smoking with this, then I'm good with it!!

Good luck to you!!

Hi RIGIRL,
Nicotine withdrawal symptoms:
irritability, mood swings, restlessness, insomnia, fatigue
inability to concentrate, sore throat, cough, congestion, headache,
increased appetite constipation, gas, stomach pain, dry mouth
sore tongue/gums , postnasal drip, tightness in the chest.
Chantix side effects:
headache, sleep problems, insomnia, unusual dreams, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting, constipation, gas, weakness, tired feeling, increased appitite, unpleasant taste in your mouth.

Some of the nicotine withdrawal and the Chantix side effects are the same. The brain fog is a common side effect that is not listed on the Chantix. Most of the withdrawal symptoms go away after a couple of weeks. The Chantix side effects will go away after a shot period of time for most people. But for some, they last the entire time they are on the pill.

Good idea to check with your doctor.
Let us know how you are doing.

Don't want to offend anyone but I haven't read about one terrific side effect..Great sex!

ROFLMAO! I've been lurking for awhile on the board and hadn't had the courage to post yet. I was wondering when someone was going to menttion this! Tomorrow is my quit day and after 6 days on the Chantix, I concur with your observation!

Just as a side note, I've been a smoker for 15 years... the last 5 years or so I have been smoking 2 packs a day or so. I just have to brag here though, I've had a pack for 2 and a half days that I have only smoked 6 cigs out of! How amazing is this drug??????????

Welcome LucyRoberts! And congratulations on getting where you are today! You are almost exactly like I was, though I smoked a little less than you. But those last three days before I quit, I was thinking, man this is the same pack from before. You will do awesome on your quit day. If you can just get through that day without a cig, every day since then has been great. Come back to these boards when you feel an urge, take a deep breath (that worked great for me), eat a carrot, anything to not smoke. You'll wake up the next day thinking, geez, I did it, and I can do it one more day. I am 6 days quit and feeling good!

Thanks for the welcome!

I wasn't sure I was going to post here or not til today. You guys seem to have such a tight knit and supportive group, I didn't want to be a disappointment. :(

I have tried every quit method out there and have had a 100 % failure rate each time. After only smoking 6 smokes in the last 2 and a half days though, I am feeling extremely confident in my quit this time. I just can't believe I don't have the jitters and my nerves aren't grinding like rusty gears! Hubby even says I haven't been grumpy! This drug is amazing!

I've been lucky on the side effects, no nausea, no headaches, no insomnia... I have been having crazy dreams and been more tired on some days than normal. I hope to get to know all of you guys and reap the benefits of knowlege from quitters further along than I am!

LucyRoberts

I think you will find the Chantix will be a big help to you. I smoked very heavy for well over 50 years and had the same 0% success rate as you when trying to quit with other methods. I have had many of the common side effects from the Chantix but none of them were bad enough for me to even consider giving up. I quit on the 9th day after starting the Chantix and have had an easy quit so far. No strong urges or cravings. I am now one day away from finishing my fifth smoke free week and don't even think about cigarettes anymore. I'm trying not to become over confident, I know it's not suppose to be this easy. I'm just enjoying one smoke free day at a time.

I got a good laugh out of your hubby saying you are not even grumpy. My wife has been saying that since I quit. I guess she thought she was in for a miserable time!

Good luck with your quit.

LucyRoberts, just keep us posted on how you are doing. Like I said, and everyone else says the same thing, just take it hour by hour and get through that first day. You will be so proud of yourself!! And as far as cranky or withdrawel, etc., I could not even sit through a meeting without becoming a lunatic wanting a smoke. That was my fear with quitting. But the Chantix took alllllll of that away. I am really serious, for me it took it away. I wanted a smoke, but by habit. Good luck and next week you'll be posting how many days Quit you are!!! Just do it!

RIGIRL,
I'm so sorry the Chantix didn't work out for you. Let us know what method you decide to use to quit....cold turkey, nicotine replacement, etc. If you choose the nicotine replacement, know it is better to use that than it is to smoke.
Cigarette Smoke contains more than 3000 chemical substances, and a few of them deserve mentioning:
Acrolein: a toxic, colorless liquid with irritating cancerous vapors

Carbon Monoxide: a toxic, flammable gas used in the manufacture of numerous chemical products. Inhalation of carbon monoxide interferes with the transportation of oxygen from the lungs to the tissues, where it is required.

Nicotine: a poisonous alkaloid that is the chief addictive substance in tobacco. It is also used as an insecticide and to kill parasitic worms in animals.

Ammonia: a gaseous alkaline compund of nitrogen and hydrogen used as a colant in refrigerating and air conditioning equipment and in explosives, artifical fertilizers, and disinfectants.

Formic Acid: a liquid gas used in processing textiles and leather. Exposure to the acid irritates the mucous membranes and causes blistering.

Hydrogen Cyanide: a poisonous liquid used in many chemical processes including fumigation, and in the case-hardening of iron and stell. Cydrogen cyanide gas is used as the lethal agent in capital punishment.

Nitrous Oxide: a group of irritating and sometimes poisonous gases that combine with hydrocarbons to produce smog.

Formaldehyde: a pungent gas used primarily as a disinfectant and preservative. It is extremely irritating to the mucous membrances.

Phenol: a caustic, poisonous acidic compound present in coal and wood tar and used in disinfectants.

Acetaldehyde: a highly toxic, flammable liquid that irritates the eyes and mucous membranes and accelerates the action of the heart. Prolonged exposure causes blood pressume to rise and causes proliferation of white and red blood cells.

Hydrogen Sulfide: a poisonous gas produced naturally from putregying matter and used extensively in chemical laboratories.

Pyridyne: a flammable liquid used in pharmaceuticals, water repellents, bactericides, and herbicides.

Methyl Chloride: a toxic gas used in the production of rubber and paint remover and as an antiknock agent in gasoline.

Acetonitrile: a toxic compound found in coal tar and molasses residue and use in the production of plastics, rubber, acrylic fiber, insecticides, and perfumes.

Propionaldehye: a colorless liquid with a suffocating odor, used as a chemical disinfectant and preservative as well as in plastic and rubber.

Methanol: a poisonous liquid alcohol used in automotive antifreezes, rocket fuels, synthetic dye stuffs, resins, drugs and perfumes.

Good Luck to you! Keep us posted as to your progress!

Mango---congrats on Day 10. Isn't it amazing looking back and how you felt. If you were like me you were really afraid you wouldn't be able to do it? And wow, look at you now. With each day confidence is lifted. Again, if you're like me you will see a HUGE difference when you break the 2 week mark (you're nearly there)! I feel great, few, if any, side effects and just yesterday I noticed my skin is looking better too. You should definitely treat yourself this w/e---even if it's something small---you deserve it!

Well, I am afraid of treating myself too much (more $ than anything!) :)
I just went out to get my hand repair kit, and I got a "Queen Bee" kit too - it has face care products, a lavender eye mask, and a calming candle.
I have a massage scheduled in 2 weeks, and I am going to Boston to see my friend at the end of the month. I am taking the bus so I don't have to drive!
I sure am giving myself incentives!!!!

OMG! Yes. I feel lethargic, kind of whoozy, a little nauseated (slightly). Somedays it is worse than others. I'm thinking of only taking 1 day instead of 2. Any advice on that one?

Overall though, I have no desire to kill myself with cigs anymore. It truly is amazing. Haven't had a smoke in 2-1/2 days. I was a pack to pack and a half a day smoker for 20+ years. I don't really want to stop the Chantix cause it is the first time I've every quite where I feel like I am not sabbotaging myself so I can go back to smoking. I really WANT to succeed this time. It's MIND BLOWING.

So, any suggestions on dealing w/ these side effects?

giawiz,
Welcome to you!!
Congratulation on stopping smoking!!
You are going through smoking withdrawals along with the Chantix side effects. Please be patient. You should feel better in about a week.
Be sure to eat something and drink a full glass of water when you take the Chantix. That is VERY important!! It helps with the nausea.

Keep posting to let us know how you are doing.

Good Luck to you.

Thanks for the kind words. I will make sure to take your advice. Today was a little more difficult cravingwise, but nothing I haven't been able to overcome. My neighbor offered me one cause I said it was hard today & I actually couldn't do it. That is a first for me. I see why everybody sounds so cheery & upbeat. You just can't help but be amazed. There is a tremendous sense of pride about it. Now, I just have to remember to replace CheezIt's with carrots & we'll be okay. ;)

How long has it been for you?

Thanks again for the advice.

Thanks Sara & Traveller! Believe me, I will not forget about the chocolate. There is so much around here after Easter it would be difficult!:dizzy:

I took your advice Sara & did cut back to 1/2 pill 3 times a day. I started it today & yes the urge was greater, but not great enough. The best part was I could function today, where yesterday I was a zombie. How long have you been doing the 1/2 pill 3x routine? Is it still a little more difficult or is working well for you? Even though it was a little harder today, I think I can survive it as long as it doesn't get any more difficult. From what I've read I think I'm getting off easy, sounds like constipation seems to be an issue & I haven't experienced that yet. :bouncing:

Thanks again. I'm really glad I found this site. I can add this to my list of things to do instead of smoking! YEAH!

Hi there! Newbie here too. My name is Dixie. Monday I will be smoke free for 4 weeks!! Whoo Hoo! I just found this site today and have been reading all the great comments. I look forward to the support here and hope I can contribute as well. I had been smoking for about 30 years and almost 2 packs a day.

My first week on Chantix was fine. No side effects that I noticed. When I went to the 1mg twice daily, things started to change. I had headaches every day for the first week. I was crabby and very tired.

During the second week the headaches went away and most of the crabiness. As a matter of fact a few guys in the office asked if I had still quit smoking.

My worst side effect is being tired. Really tired. I typically sleep 6 hours a night. Now I am sleeping 8 hours and sometimes need a quick nap after work. What is up with that? Even when I wake in the morning I feel a little groggy. It takes me about 20 minutes to shake it off. Normally I am a morning person too. I'm starting to think I think of sleep more than cigs.

I went to the DR Thursday for another follow up appointment. I am now suffering from a little water retention. My DR started me on a mild lasix and we will see how things are in a month.

I am so surprised this has been so easy. I thought I would be pulling my hair out and every one else's that I know by now. Well, I'm not bald yet. During the day I don't even think about smoking. I love that my car stays clean and smells nice. The only time I really want a cig is late in the evening when I am unwinding. I think about them then.

If being tired and retaining a little water is the worst that happens, I have no complaints. I'm just keeping in mind this should be temporary and should quit once I go off the meds. It's nothing I can't deal with. It's worth it to me to not smoke.

Congrats to all of you who have started this journey of being smoke free. I look forward to getting to know you all. :)

Hi Dixie,
Welcome to the message board!!
Thank you for your wonderful letter!!
Congratulations on being smokefree for almost 4 weeks!! Way to Go!!:blob_fire
I too was soooooo tired the first month. I had to make myself get up and start exercising. That helped to bring my energy level up. But it was a chore for me. The tiredness has as much to do with nicotine withdrawals as it does the Chantix. So we get a double whammy of it!!

I'm so glad your doctor is helping you with the side effects. How is the lasix working for you? I tell people all the time to notify their doctor of the side effects that are just too tough to handle.

I'm so glad the Chantix is working for you like it is suppose to. I would never have been able to quit without it. I'm fully convinced of that.

Please come and post often to let us know how you are doing. Let us know how we can help you in your quit. The people here are the best anywhere in the world!! I truly mean that.

Remember now Smoking is no longer an option.

Good Luck to you!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I just started the lasix Thursday and so far, so good. I think I am one of just a few patients of my DR's to use Chantix. It's a learning process for us. From what I am reading, edema is not uncommon. Any time you try a new medication, I feel it is important to keep in touch with your DR.

Memaw, I had to chuckle when you mentioned exercise. I was talking with my daughter last night and mentioned I might need to work out a litttle extra. Then I said "What next...dieting???" It's hell trying to get healthy.

Hi Sue & chrvit,

I am 4 weeks on chantix & am 6 days nicotine free. I had some of the symptoms, but not the emotional ones. I had the woozy/dizzy thing, big time nausea & am definitely tired. What seems to be working for me is to break the pills in half. I take 1/2 pill 3 times a day instead of 2 whole pills. I make sure I take it food & LOTS of water. I'm still tired, but I don't have that woozy nauseated feeling that knocked me on my butt. That is what is working for me. It was great advice I got on this very chat board. Just keep at it. Modify it & make it yours. It will work. You're doing great. A lot of the people here come on later in the evening. They may have some better ideas for you. Don't give up, even IF you have to go back to your doctor. We're here for you. You can do this. I promise.

Nice to meet ya, been lurking for awhile, now just have to pose a question.

Is anyone experiencing hot flashes :blob_fire ? I've been on chantix for 2 weeks and started experiencing hot flashes just after starting the 1mg tabs. The only other side effect I've had are feeling tired the first week. I still really want a cigarette at certain times of the day. I managed to not smoke while driving or after eating but during the boring parts of my day I REALLY want a smoke. But am doing well to get past it. I started eating licorice Good and Plenties, they seem to be helping, but these hot flashes are driving me nuts :dizzy: !

Hi yourmajesty,
Welcome to the message board. So glad you stopped lurking and joined us here.

On the list of side effects it lists under Vascular Disorder as a Frequent side effect...hot flush.
The tired feeling also goes along with nicotine withdrawal. Even people who go cold turkey experience this. But the tiredness is also one of the side effects of the Chantix. So double whammy!! It will get better!!

How long have you been quit?
Yeah, I know what you mean about wanting to smoke because you are bored. What you have to do is make sure you aren't bored. And find something to do with you hands!! Find new habits!!

I understand about the hot flashes! I had them when I got off my hormone pills!! My husband has them because he takes a high dose of niacin.
Notify your doctor and see if there is anything you can take for them.

Good Luck to you!!
Please let us know how you are doing.

Thanks for the welcome Memaw.
I started the chantix the last week of March, quit date must have been after the first of April don't really remember exact date. I've had a few slips since then but I don't let that get me down I'll make it. They taste nasty and I couldn't finish a whole cig so I guess that's a plus. I think the hardest part in the beginning was that I didn't want to quit in the first place, I quit cuz hubby wanted to quit again (a string of cold turkey quits) and I wanted to make it easier for him this time. So we both started the Chantix, he gave in to want first so I was dumb enough to say bump this I didn't want to quit anyway and gave in. But we're back on track so we'll see how it goes.

Memaw649
04-17-2007, 02:57 AM
yourmajesty,
For your quit to be successful, you have got to want to quit more than you want to smoke. The Chantix can do just so much. If you are not giving it all you've got, you are going to keep "slipping". The nicotine in cigarettes is very addictive. Moreso than cocaine.
The cravings will pass whether you smoke or not. Try not to give in to them. They don't last all the long. Next time one hits you, time it.

I know I am an addict. I can never have even one puff of another cigarette as long as I live. If I do, I will be a pack a day smoker again. I think it was Brenda82560 that first posted N.O.P.E. (Not One Puff Ever). I urge you to not give in to temptation. Quitting has such wonderful benefits. Plus there are so many places now that you can't smoke!

Good Luck to you!!

 Hi Majesty,

I think Memaw said everything that came to mind when I read your post. You must want to QUIT to be successful at quitting. When someone is a smoker it does not take much to fall into temptation if ones heart is not in it. Chantix is a wonderful drug and does what it is supposed to do, but the person quitting must do his part as well. I hope you decide to QUIT for good. Most people do not "want" to QUIT cause they know how hard it is to QUIT. Chantix makes it not so difficult, give it a try and let the Chantix work, you may be pleasantly surprised. I was.

Sapphire :)

Hello everyone,

I'm on day 8 and I'm not smoking!! This is absolutely amazing - I had smoked at least a pack a day for over 30 years. I was extremely nervous to start the Chantix more because I was so afraid to be without my cigs (they were almost a best friend) and I was worried I would fail. After 5 1/2 days I took my last puff and I can honestly say I don't miss it at all. I have tolerable cravings and I do miss it but I am never smoking again. The side effects haven't been horrible except for being VERY tired. I happened to get strep throat and a sinus infection on day 2 so sleeping has been difficult and from what I have read the Chantix can cause insomnia. I'm hoping by the end of the week things will improve and I won't feel so exhausted. I haven't had any stomach problems which I did expect - I take my pills with a container of yogurt and lots of water. If anyone has any suggestions for the exhaustion I'd love to hear them.

Best of luck to everyone,

Philmajor,
Ditto what Sara said. Exercise. Had to make myself get up off the couch and go walking. Started have more energy when I did that.

Walking will hopefully help me, Im gonna give it a try today, I can walk 2 miles on the treadmill at the gym, so Im gonna try at least a half mile while I get really anxious - if anything it will help counter act the extra snacking!

Thanks everyone! I know I should be walking every night but I'm lazy. I have 2 beautiful dogs that hike in the morning with my husband and they would love an evening walk so I guess with the weather improving there isn't any excuse:rolleyes:
