After reading about chantix for over a month and finally getting it I am happy to say that it does indeed seem to work. I would think everyone is different as I took it for 3 weeks before actually quitting. I never really set a quit date as it seems impossible to keep it and i knew if i did and had any extra cigarettes that i would end up smoking for another day or so. So it turned out that Sunday at 1:45am I ended up having 3 smokes left and knowing that i really wanted to finally stop i chained smoked them and have not looked back. I suppose the reason i waited so long to quit after starting the chantix was that i just had to decide to when it was time. So here in less than an hour i will be free of nicotine for 72 hours and it really feels good. The first day was not real bad , worst part i think was just having something to do with my hands, day two was a little worse , but today has been great. Yes there are the wild dreams, but just being able to breath and not keep myself awake from the wheezing is something in its self.
I would like to go ahead and thank all of the board in advance as it was this board that convinced me to get the chantix to start with. And after smoking 2-3 packs a day for 22 years I really feel good. So now its off to bed for tonights Chantix dreams of the day:yawn: :) . I have made it 3 days and look forward to the rest of my smoke free life.

KentuckyGuy! WAY TO GO! Welcome to the land of the 'FREE'. Free from dependency, free from smelling, free from spending $, free from __________[you fill in the blank]. Believe me, 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have believed it but LIFE ON THIS SIDE IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!! I just had to run an errand for work, for which I normally drive but walked instead. Wow, what a novelty to not be 1/2 out of breath & still sucking on a cig. Geesh! Keep up the good work and keep coming here (it was an IMMENSE help for me).

Congrats! you can do it!!!
I just had a terrible 4 days, and remained smoke free through out! We lost power Saturday, due to an ice storm, and had to find shelter else where, we just came home less than an hour ago. I went to work Monday, and Tuesday, and my husbands Aunts funeral was today. It was tough, but i never even thought of asking anyone for a cigerette, or of buying any. The smell is a big turn off now!

Congratulations KentuckyGuy!!! Verrryyy nice work...
I did not discover this board until after I started Chantix. A body at work suggested I see if they existed and sure enough, here I am. I quit two weeks into Chantix and have not smoked in over 4 1/2 weeks. It is absolutely amazing to me. The time went by so quickly and it just got easier and easier. It really does help to keep telling yourself that smoking is not an option any more. Please let us know how your progressing every once in awhile.

That would probably be from Moss or Shell Farms, Both of which use to raise several 100 acres of tobacco. This use to be one of the top producing tobacco counties in the state before all of the buy outs. So alot of the farmers now are taking on other things. At least raising flowers are not bad for our health.
I am at 3 days and 18 hours so far and feel good, so nice to breath. Still find myself reaching for one after doing certain thing, but know that will pass in time.

Memaw, thank-you it has been 10 days. The discouraging thing is, when I tell people I have quit, they say "how long?" and when I tell them they say things like, well, talk to me in a month or 2 and I will be impressed, or oh wow (sarcastically) Of course they are non smokers and have no idea, but still a little support and encouragment would me nice! That is one reason I love coming here, we all know what we are dealing with and understand one another.
I hope that you are doing allright, I know you had a hard time recently too.
Hope everyone has a good day! more winter weather on the way here today, yuck....

Lynda,
Sound like you have really been through the ringer these past four days. No heat??? Arghh... That happened to me a few months ago when it was 15 below zero in Chicago - and of course it just HAD to happen on a Saturday morning when the Heating-N-Air folks were taking the weekend off.
I was glad to hear you made it through a stressful few days without smoking. Hey, CONGRATULATIONS on staying 10 days quit. I'll bet you're pretty darn proud of yourself. You should be, because we all are... :D
Good to see you back!!!

Lynda and Deb,
I don't care what anyone says....10 days IS terrific!!!!!
skimmer.....WOOWOO 6 days!!! Keep it up!!
When I went that first day without a cigarette, I thougt I had done something spectacular!! I had never did that before. I was very fortunate in that I had the support of my entire family. No one even acted like it wasn't a big deal. Even the ones who never smoked, continued to cheer me on. They really wanted me to succeed...but no more than I did.
I want everyone on this board to succeed!! I think that would be just so wonderful!!
Kevin, You are just fantastic!! You are always so positive and are so willing to offer up such good advice. You are gonna be smoke free for the rest of your life. Your attitude says that. Congratulations!!

Thanks Kevin,
It will be day 14 here in about 7 hours. its really hard to believe its already been two weeks. I can really tell the difference, mostly the smell of things. I find the smell of cigarette smoke almost offensive now. I was going to walmart the other day and walked by there butt can at the door and the smell about knocked me down. I was so amazed that before as a smoker i had never noticed it as much.
Today is day 34 on chantix itself as i took it 3 weeks prior to quitting. So tonight at 2 am I celebrate 14 days clean from nicotine.
Free and Healing for Thirteen Days, 15 Hours and 39 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 2 Days and 20 Hours, by avoiding the use of 819 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me $122.94.

Hey KentuckyGuy, I remember when you were starting your first quit day! You are right behind me as I am 2 weeks and 2 days quit! You have done an awesome job. I know what you mean about the smell. Some of the friends of my boys smoke, and OMG they all smell like an ashtray! I never noticed it before. I bought all kinds of air fresheners at the store this week. I never smoked in the house, but on a patio out back and I have been trying to get the smell out. It's not bad, but it was warm today and I could smell it more. Again, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Well, I have been reading about Chantix. I actually heard about it on the Art Bell Radio show last night. I then started searching the web for info and that led me here.
My plan is to see my Dr. tomorrow (Monday) morning 3-26-07 and get the prescription of Chantix. I have set a quit date for next Tuesday 4-5-07. I will probably do like someone else here said they did. I will probably try to quit when I run out of smokes next week.
Man this is going to be tough......I hope the Chantix really helps. I have smoked 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day for 30 years. I know I can do it. I also know it's not going to be easy. Best thing going for me is that I really want to quit. I never wanted to quit in the past. I was just trying to shut my wife up. She really wanted me to quit, so I would give it the old........see I tried.......just can't quit story.
I REALLY want to quit. If this stuff blocks the nicotine to the brain, like it is advertised, then it will make quitting much easier.
You all keep me in your prayers and I will try to keep you posted on my progress.
Man I can't wait to get to the Dr. in the morning.
Later

Hi Kenny,
Welcome to the quitters club! Chantix worked really well for me - I am 1 month and 5 days FREE from cigs today. It was a much better experience than the patch - which I used 2x to quit. I experienced a few of the side effects - nausea and insomnia, but nothing so bad I stopped using it. Make sure you take the pill right after you eat, and drink LOTS of water. Make a plan to keep busy - especially during your triggers - for me, the toughest part was in the car, right after work and on the weekends. Stay strong and you'll do GREAT!
you will be in my thoughts

Hi Kenny,
Welcome to this board, and just wanted to tell you good luck. I think you will find a LOT of people who were in the same boat as you, afraid they couldn't do it, etc. and we have quit. I am just over a month quit and still amazed how relatively easy it was. I come to this site almost every day just for motivation and to see where everyone is. If you really want to quit, then you will be able to with the med. What I found helpful the week before, when I started the pills, was to really pay attention to when and why I was smoking. I asked myself if I needed this cig, or wanted it. But the time I smoked the last smoke, I knew if I had an urge to get a cig that mostly it was habit. Keep checking in here and let us know how you are doing!

Kenny---- Congrats on taking the steps to becoming a nonsmoker. I have been taking Chantix for a week or so and tomorrow is my QUIT date. Without the Chantix I would not have stood a chance of making it, but with the way Chantix works, well, I think I will finally be successful this time.
Chantix is the first drug that addresses the biological processes associated with the addiction of smoking. With Chantix The BUZZ will become a thing of the past making smoking distasteful.
Smoking was actually distasteful before, but the BUZZ make it worth it for us. We tolerated the awful smell. We tolerated the way it made us smell. We tolerated ashes and cigarette butts flowing out of ashtrays. We tolerated the streaks of tar and nicotine all over our walls and furnishings. We tolerated going outside in freezing weather just to smoke. We tolerated the dirty looks from nonsmokers. We avoided social settings that would not allow us to get our BUZZ. We would cough and wheeze and have an overabundance of phlegm production, as our lungs worked to reject the poison we kept infiltrating it with by smoking. We constantly worried about emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Even the scare of lung cancer would not stop us from wanting and smoking that next cigarette.
That NICITINE BUZZ was is powerful thing. It made us do what even our common sense even told us was disgusting. And smoking is disgusting, even to a smoker. But that BUZZ, dang, we sure put up with a lot to get it and to keep on getting it. One cigarette after another, just to sustain the BUZZ. The ups and downs of maintaining the NICOTINE BUZZ is what consists of the day of a smoker.
Like you, I too look so forward to finding that I can really live life without having a cigarette hanging out of my mouth. I have smoked for 35 years, but many have quit that smoked a lot longer than I have. This message board is the best thing that ever happened to me. The support is wonderful and sincere. Keep coming back and let us all know how you are doing.

Kenny---I will do it, and you will, too. Wish me luck as I go thru tomorrow as my first day of being a nonsmoker.

Well, I have read alot of posts on here and it just makes me excited to see so many people that have successfully quit smoking. I am taking the Chantix also and today is my 4th day of quitting (blue pills). I am sooo done with smoking there is not enough money etc to make me take one puff. I have smoked for some 30 yrs and tried more than once and there will be no more trying. I have quit!!!! The first two days were rough but I am sure the Chantix helped make the urges more bearable. Cried like a baby off and on the second day. I kinda thought maybe since I am always grabbing a cigarette when I am upset maybe just my emotions coming out. Have'nt had many side effects but I follow directions about food and water. I did have trouble getting to sleep last night but I figured that was restlessness from the nicotine leaving my body. Anyways I already feel better physically than I did a week ago, just keep talking to myself and patting myself on the back for quitting. I really think attitude is the key I love that "Smoking is not an Option" That phrase went through my head today and then I read it on this board. Thats some kind of karmic fate huh? You guys are awesome in the way you cheer people on. I know just reading other people dealing with the same stuff is helpful.
Thanks Just alittlecrazy :)

Hi Kenny,
Welcome to the message board!! Glad to have you here. Look forward to getting to know you as you go through this journey to become healthier.
A little tip....while you are waiting for your quit date, try to change When and Where you smoke. It will help with the "habit" part of smoking. Try to postpone that after dinner cigarette for 5 or so minutes.
A little story about how I got started on the Chantix. I was at my doctor's office last August for a check up. My doctor asked me if I wanted to quit smoking. Well...you don't tell your doctor Naw, I don't want to do that. So I said Sure. He then told me about the Chantix and asked if I wanted to try it. Again, not wanting to tell him No...I said Sure. I thought he was going to give a prescription, but instead he gave me the first month's supply. He told me to call him after I completed the first month and he would give me a script for the other two months. Well, the only reason I agreed to take this new pill was to say to my husband and my doctor...See, I tried that and it didn't work either! But somewhere in that first week of taking the Chantix, I thought I'd give it an honest try. And Lo and Behold it worked!! I would have never believed that I could quit smoking!!
So if I can quit smoking while not really wanting to, it should be a breeze for you!!
We are all here to help in any way we can. Good Luck to you!!

Hi alittlecrazy58,
Welcome to the best no smoking site!! We just love it when new quitters join us here. Congratulations on being smoke free for 4 whole days!! Way To Go!!:blob_fire :blob_fire
I am 57 years old and I smoked for 40 years before I was able to quit. I did have some of the side effects associated with the Chantix, but I was able to make it through the 12 weeks.
You are right about the sleeplessness...nicotine withdrawal will cause that. The Chantix will too.
Isn't it amazing how fast you begin to feel better? Like I to told someone the other day...I didn't realize I felt bad until I began to feel so good!!
I'm glad you like "Smoking is not an option." I know the people on this board probably get tired of me saying that so often, but it works!!
I've also got a new one..."The cravings will pass whether you smoke or not."
I like that one!
And you're right, we are all going through, or have gone through, the same thing. We understand.
Keep up the good work!! Let us know how you are doing in your quit. Keep posting.

Hi Alittlecrazy!
I am on Day1 and after reading your post if I become overly emotional during my first week or so I will know that it is just a part of the program and I will get over it. I am so happy that today I do not smell like a tobacco farm. My Giorgio finally will smell like Giorgio. Before I had hoped perfume would cover up the tobacco smell, now I want to wear it so I smell good. Wow, what a thought.
My New Year's resolution was to quit smoking. I tried the patch and the side effects were just too much. Nightmare after nightmare. Anyway, I finally got to where I thought I would never be able to quit. I thought about going into some sort of drug rehab, but not being wealthy I could not afford it. Then I heard about Chantix and when I read how it worked, I thought that this just might be what I need.
I am cranking up my air purifier today. My father lives with me and smokes at least 3 packs a day. I would prefer not to have cigarettes in the house, but it is his decision to smoke and being an addict myself I know better than to nag him about smoking.
Congrats to you. So far so good. :)

Hi, Kenny!
Well, today is my QUIT day. So far so good. Did you get your prescription? Did you start taking it yet? How are you feeling?
I am apprehensive but okay, I am not crawling out of my skin NEEDING a cigarette. The urges come and go, and then come again. That is natural, dang, I smoked for decades not weeks. My body is use to me lighting up. It will take awhile for my brain to adjust that it is in a smoke free environement. My hands will learn to do other things than to be playing with a cigarette all the time.
Plan to drink lots of water. Ice water is wonderful and will help to flush out the nicotine in our bodies.
I am rooting for you. I am glad that you are quitting for "you" this time. That will make it all the more worthwhile. You are worth it.

Yeah for Kenny and Saphire!!
Welcome to the quitter's club guys and gals! You will find the best people in the world right here. We have all been thru what you're going thru, and are still going thru. I am one month quit last Friday, and still can't even believe it. After smoking for 20 yrs, it's pretty freaking amazing how easy it was to quit this time. I think it's got to be a decision that you have made to yourself, you have to really want to quit. Even though I know I tried before too, yeah, and it was always funny to see how long I could go before lighting up again. Well no more!! It's not funny to be addicted to something and have it run your whole life!!
And you know what? All my friends that smoke, are now quitting, have quit or are going to quit taking Chantix! I'm so excited for them and us getting a new lease on life....we are all in our late 40's, 50's and some are starting to experience health problems, probably from smoking.
Anyways, I'm glad everyone's here and helping each other out. This is an awesome message board!!
Good luck in your quit and let us know how you're doing....

Congratulations Sapphire!!! You're doing it!!! You're doing it!!!
Keep up the good work and please come back, especially when you feel the quit is getting a little rough. Do you think your father would mind if he were asked to smoke outside, or in a particular room with the window open? You sure are doing good so far. One thing I noticed when I quit is that the nicotine smell really started to stink after awhile. Three packs a day of second hand smoke in the house is a real hand-full.
Just wondering...

Thanks for the support guys. This is day 5 for me and its almost over. I am going to bed after posting. To everyone just starting hang in there it does get easier. Today was a little different? than yesterday. No overwhelming urges like the first couple of days, just thoughts about smoking, I just kept on moving like the energizer bunny. Got a little irritated at myself for obsessing so much. I wasn't prepared to be so distracted by the thoughts. I know this will get better from reading everyone elses experiences. To Sapphire I am sending good thoughts your way. I know you can do this. Smoking was the period to every sentence in my life. I was tired of it controlling me. I want my life back!! Good Luck and Good Night everyone.

Sapphire,
Sounds like your dad needs to find something else to do beside smoking. Anyone smoking three packs a day is doing so out of boredom as much as from the addiction.
How does he feel about you quitting? Is he supportive? If so, maybe you can aske him to smoke outside until you have been quit for a while. If you don't feel comforatable asking him to do this, hopefully the Chantix will get you through the tuff spots.
We're all pulling for you here!! Good Luck!!

Hey alittlecrazy,
Congrats on day 5!! WAY TO GO!! You're doing so good. Keep it up.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Your body is going through some radical changes. So you have evey right to be a little irritable and distracted.
Nicotine withdrawal usually last from one to three weeks, or possibly a little longer. Even though you are on the Chantix, you will still experience nicotine withdrawal. It will just be more managable and not as severe.
So Good Luck to you!! And cut yourself some slack!!
