I had my root canal done 2 days ago. Now I'm in slight pain but it's normal as far as I know. What I'm worried about is - when will I know if it's been successful? I know some of them fail but how soon after root canal would I know and how would I know it?
Also, how long can I wait till my crown is fitted? My dentist still hasn't contacted me about my appointment as he should. I have a temprorary filling at the moment.

Hi, I had a root canal done on the 9th of feb. My dentist told me that, or the paper he gave me, said that it would take 1 to 2 weeks before the bruising would go away and your tooth to feel normal. My tooth felt better after a week, but it was a painful week. I guess if it doesnt feel good after that, you should probably go back and ask.
As for the crown the paper said I should make another appt to get the crown on between 3 to 4 weeks after, just to make sure. I havent gotten a crown yet and my tooth is fine (and my tooth was a molar).
If you really feel something is wrong, though, you should call your dentist and ask if your symptoms are normal.
Hope you feel better! =)

Thank you for your replies! Pain is gone now and my dentist already made an appointment with me for tomorrow, probably to measure for my crown. (sounds almost like I'm a queen!? ;-) )
I hope it goes well from now on!

wow, exactly what I am going through at this moment. I had my root canal on a front tooth three days ago now and when I bite down it hurts and i have a temp filling in there. A filling fell out of this tooth and the back is almost completely gone. That putty like filling is wearing down so I need to apply some more to keep it filled.
I was also wondering how long I can wait to get my crown. I am glad to hear that I don't need to get it done right away due to money issues. Is there any problem in waiting six to eight weeks? Am I opened up to infection if the temp filling comes out?

Also I want to say something about a disappointment with my dentist. She did a good job with the root canal and numbed me good where I felt nothing but no explaination of procedure was explained before hand. No info was given to me afterwards about what I can expect.
So I went in there having to ask all kinds of questions to whom ever was near me in the office. I had to ask the lady cleaning my teeth and the assistant in passing because there was such a lack of expaination. I never had a root canal or crown or even extractions. The dentist wants to extract three wisdom teeth in one day in the office and it would have been nice to have some explaination of what I can expect since I never had an extraction.

bjz - that's not very reassuring! I am a little disappointed with my dentist also! When I came in for my appointment he just said he'd put a normal filling in and put a crown when he's sure the root canal has worked. Fair enough... But he only went and put an expensive white filling (£75!!!) without asking whether I mind paying that much money for something that will be pulled out in a month's time!!!! He probably thinks I'm made of money... I already paid nearly £500 for my root canal as he sent me to do it at some private clinic...
Or am I wrong? Is this a part of preparation for a crown?
