I just wanted to say thanks to everybody that has posted about quitting. Because of this forum I went out and got a prescription for Chantix. Over the last few weeks, I think that I read every post on here for encouragement. I am now on my second nicotine free day.
I have been a chewer by day and smoker by night for 20 years. You name it, cold turkey, patches, pills, hypnosis, I've tried them all. I went 2 months once.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have even started fights with my wife when I tried to quit so that I could blame her for my failing(to myself). This time I'm trying something different even though it may be a real shocker for my system. For about three weeks now I've been on the South Beach diet, quit drinking beer and as of yesterday I'm nicotine free. I've learned that for me, I can't quit smoking with my beloved Miller Light in my hand. Sorry for being so long winded. Regards, Tom

Hey TomJC - I am so glad to hear that you decided to quit after reading this message board. It helped convince me too. I mean, I really appreciate everybody posting everything they have, and the cheers and encouragement everyone has provided is just unbelievable. I am so happy to be nicotine free, once and for all. Well, I'm only 6 days into my quit, but I can already tell the difference. And you know what? I don't have to wash my hair everyday now, to get the stink out!! And I can wear my T-shirts more than once without having to wash them too!! And my husband and I are kissing and making out alot more now!! (alright, that might be too much information!) :)
Anyways, welcome to the quitters club, and keep coming back and letting us know your progress. The weight gain thing is scaring me too, but I will tackle it when it happens (if). I figure the best thing I can do for myself right now, is to stay smoke-free.

TomJC, Welcome and congrats on 2 days nico-free.
Re: your Miller Lite. I quite enjoy my Bud Lights and almost 'skipped' a get together with friends due to this (it was day 6 of my quit) but I said sooner or later, I'm going to have to face this (cuz I am NOT giving up my beer) and you know what, I got through it. I got the urges and thought how good would a cig taste right now, but then I dug deeper and thought no, it won't make my beer taste better, I won't feel better and to boot, I'd have to leave everyone and go outside to have it (which never bothered me before but did that night). I've had 2 more drinking occasions since and yeah, I think of them but in the 'habit' way not the 'urge' way and those urges are growing weaker & weaker by the day. Of course, don't rush into anything until YOU feel comfortable doing it; I just wnated you to know that there is 'beer after quititng'.
Keep up the good work!

You guys are great!
Thanks for your encouragement. I need a place like this because my wife never smoked and has no idea what I'm going through. So far so good. I bought these little mint pouches that are nicotine free and they are really helping me out with the habit side of things.

I went boating last weekend on my 2nd day of quit -and drank 3 beers (or was it 4, I lost count) and was fine. Yeah I thought about it, but I am determined to make this quit my last one!!
TomJC - I'm serious man, keep coming back to this board, it's addicting!! hehe - and it really helps with the whole quitting thing. We're all going thru the same thing!! It's a lifestyle change, and some of us have smoked for 20 yrs ore more, so we've got a new lease on life, all because we CHOSE to quit!!
Good luck - and if your wife complains you're spending too much time online, just tell her "It's better than smoking!" :)

Congratulations TomJC!!!
I know just what you mean about dealing with people who have never smoked. I have a best friend that has been nagging me very strongly for over 15 years to quit. He HATES the smoke. He never even noticed I quit smoking. I had to tell him over the phone before he even noticed. He said "Aw-right!!!" - and that was the end of it. No further discussion. No "How are you doing???". No nothing... I quit four weeks ago. Still nothing... Some support group I have over here, huh???
Oh well, I quit for ME and that's all that counts... At least he finally stopped complaining - what a relief!!!
That's why I absolutely love coming back to this place. The people here are terrific!!! Everyone can relate in one way or another.
Best of luck to you!!!

And Kevin, to add to your story, I am a closet smoker, 1.5 packs a day. Ooops, I WAS a smoker. How I managed to smoke that many I don't know, but I keep wanting to tell people Hey I Quit, and I can't! Because they never knew I smoked in the first place. Soooo, like you said, I did this for my children, and for me. I'm 47 and would love to be 97 with grandkids, great grandkids, etc. I used to worry when my sons got married and have kids that they wouldn't let me babysit because I smoked. And there is no more checking to see if you have enough for the next morning, do I have enough breath mints, is there enough time between this stop and the next to smoke. OMG it so controlled my life. I was even job searching based on where I thought I might be able to smoke. How sad is that? So no more for me!

TomJC,
WELCOME!! So glad you decided to join us! You will not find a better bunch of people anywhere on the Internet. They are so supportive and so willing to help.
2 days without nicotine is SUPER! Congratulations!
I too have a spouse who never smoked. We have our 32nd anniversary coming up next week and we dated for 3 years before we got married. So he put up with my smoking a long time. All I've got to say is he must really love me. That stuff stinks!! He says my hair smells better and I taste better.
As far as the beer is concerned.... you're going to have to judge for youself. For some people the alcohol lowers their resistence and they cave and smoke. I didn't try it until I had been quit for one month and then it was in a restaurant. It was okay. I had no bad urges to smoke. Just a passing thought.
Now I have no problem with it at all. I have been quit for 6 months 2 weeks and 1 day.
Please stick around and let us know how you are doing.
Good Luck to you!!

Hi All,
I'm almost done with day three and am doing pretty good so far. Today was probably the worst though. Nothing that I couldn' deal with.
Tonight is a little different for me though. Normaly I would be a my best friends place drinking a few beers, smoking and B.S.ing. I told him today not to take it personaly, but I might be away for awile. He understood. Maybe he will follow my lead. I'm not going to preach about it to him. I hated it when people did that to me. You kinda have to make up your own mind on this.

Congrats Tom!
I know how you're feeling. I'm on day 12 and it's friday and i'm dying for a drink and a cig. it's been on my mind for the past 3 hours and i just can't get it out of my head. i'm willing to go so far as to buy a pack, take one for myself and give the pack away. just to have ONE. but i got to tell you, days 4 to 11, i didn't want one. not at all. and i stopped cold too. without any help aids. but after the week i've had, i can't help it. i'm dieing for just ONE smoke. it'll pass though. i was a smoker for 15 years, so this is really hard for me. but if i can go through days 4 to 11 without one, so can you. day 3 is almost over for you, so you're doing great and it's all a smooth ride from here. eventually you're going to feel the way i do right now, but i promise you, it'll pass, just as it's passing for me right now. with any luck, i'll post again tomorrow to say i'm on day 13 of a smoke free future. :)

TomJC,
You're doing good!! Day three is always hard! The first week is hard. After that it gets a little easier. I've heard it said by some people that the 3's are hard. 3rd day, 3rd week, 3rd month. For me the first week was very hard, then it started getting better from there.
I too had to change some of my habits until I felt more confident in my quit. After a month I tried to do the things that I had been avoiding. Everything went okay. Nothing I couldn't handle.
Three days without a cigarette is A WONDERFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT!! Congratulations to you.
Keep it up!!

Vanita,
Welcome to the best support board on the internet!!! You're gonna love the people here.
So you're going cold turkey!! WOW! Congratulations to you. I'm impressed.
I have a suggestion for you. You are still new enough in your quit to do this. Write down how you felt that first week. The withdrawals, the emotions. Then when you get to thinking that you can take one puff of a cigarette, I want you to read over that list. Because I don't know anyone that wants to go through withdrawals again. That is what will happen if you smoke just one cigarette.
You say you are dying for a cig and a drink. Think about that statement.
Now aren't you glad to be smoke free!! And able to live a little longer than you would have as a smoker. Did you know that smoking kills 400,000 Americans each year? By quitting you have greatly reduced your chances of being one of the 400,000.
Day 12 is really, really good!!! It will get better the longer you're quit and the longer that nicotine and smoking is out of your body.
Good Luck to you!! And keep posting! Let us know how you're doing.

Well is't day four and I had a few beers tonight. I was afraid to drink while I am trying to quit but it was a nice day and I was thirsty. I went over to my smoking friends house and was tempted but I didn't cave in. I wish I were to the point that I find second hand smoke offensive but I'm not their yet. This was the hardest time I had so far but I passed the test.

Tom,
You're braver than I was. Ain't no way I would have attempted what you did after only 4 days!! Congratulations to you on staying strong. But maybe you shouldn't tempt fate too much right now. I would hate to see you have a setback after all the hard work you've put into this quit.
You know, cigarette smoke still doesn't bother me. Now my brother's cigar smoke is VERY offensive. Ugh!! But it always has been.:)

Great job TomJC!! I remember the day you started this and now look where you are?? As far as the smell of cigs, I have developed Laser Nico Nose. Man, if you smoked an hour ago, I can smell it now. And I feel I am a dog now sniffing everyone and everything. Especially in a store. But watching someone smoke has not bothered me. But watching people in their cars smoking is kind of sad, as that's what I used to look like. This is my tenth day and I am doing good!!!

I can smell an outside ashtray 50 feet from it. Does it seem to you that more people are smoking in their cars or do I just notice it more now? I was shopping at an outdoor mall yesterday and knew someone was smoking and looked to find who it was. Car exhaust used to bother me so much at first, but it doesn't anymore. Not all smells are good but boy does chocolate and coffee get me drooling. :p
