Has anyone taken Dong Quai? I read that it is supposed to help menstrual problems (infrequent cycles) among other things.

I am 20 and I haven't gotten my period in a while...I'm not looking for a cure, necessarily, but maybe something to help.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I think it is an ephedrene substance that speeds up the metabloism

Dong Quai is not ephedrine...it is an Eastern remedy used to balance the hormones and I have used it in the past when transitioning off birth control pills without any problems or side effects.

But my concern is you really need to investigate why your period is MIA. That is not normal. There can be many causes. Excessive exercise, dieting, rapid weight loss or gain...I lost my menses over a year while in college due to anorexia. It could be issues with your thyroid, PCOS, or other hormone imbalances. You really should see your gynecologist and get checked for those things and have some hormone tests run to see what is going on with your body.

If your gynecologist won't help you, try going to an endocrinologist and having the hormone tests run there.

Dong Quai is supposed to be great for women with very painful cramps. From what I've read, it's supposed to be really great in helping the cramps be less painful.

But I agree that you should see a gyne to find out why you haven't had your period. That should be your first step.

Thanks for the replies! The thing is, I have seen several different gynes and no one seems to know what is going on... It is very frustrating. I do agree that finding out what the cause is IS most important, and will remain my priority, I'm just worried that this wait time is doing harm... and sometimes natural things could help (maybe)

the thing is I haven't lost/gained any weight, I don't excessively exercise, etc etc etc...no one can pinpoint what it is  ...although I'm headed in the direction of PCOS even though I don't have excessive body hair growth and i'm not overweight...
I just hate the thought of being INFERTILE, it just makes me sad. :( Then again, I don't know that for sure.

Sorry, I'm done venting...
