My seven year old has had 3 seizures in a year. They only happen at night when he is sleeping and they start off with him coughing once and then a loud violent vomit. The seizures last about 5-6 minutes but there is no convulsing. When the seizure is over he passes out and then wakes up about an hour later with a migraine and throwing up, but well aware of what is going on. He does not remember the seizure part but he remembers the headaches. Has anyone heard of the vomitting before a seizure?
The doctors want me to start him on Trileptal (sp?) I am so nervous to start him on this due to all the horrible things I hear about side effects and that sometimes it can bring the seizures on during the day. He is an over achiever in 1st grade already- he is reading on a 5th grade level and he is doing 3rd grade math. Someone said that the Trileptal will cause him to have difficulty in school and weight gain.
If anyone can shed some light on this for me it would be very grateful.
Thank you

I usually don't have a great deal in common with a 7 year old...( I am 51)he sounds much smarter than me....however...my tonic clonic seizures have been at night and I threw up with them. I don't know if it was before the seizure as a aura or in between several seizures...I also had headaches...and I take Trileptal...along with Keppra...I have not gained any weight with the Trileptal...it seems to have control my simple partial seizures better than Dilantin...I do feel dizzy but that may be my blood pressure medication.

Hi - although it is important to be aware of all possible side effects - they definitely don't affect everyone. In fact, they can have the exact opposite side effect than listed. My daughter has exprienced alot of that over 22 years. I was hesitant to put her on Keppra for years, because of all the negativity around side effects - she hasn't experienced any of them. Good luck - not easy making all these decisions for our children - all the best.....Paula
