View Full Version : Does cardio prevent muscle gain?

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I don't feel like digging through old threads to find where. I've just recently begun weight training. My goal is to gain a lot of muscle and reshape my body as well as raise my metabolism. However, I'm also trying to burn off a good amount of fat especially around my midsection. My current routine is to 30 minutes of cardio every morning and 60 minutes of weights every evening, working a different group each night. I don't work my legs cause they're already kind of big and I don't want them bulkier. I take in about 125 grams of protein a day.

Now, I've recently read that if a person wants to gain muscle, then they should cut out all cardio cause this will prevent or slow muscle gain. First of all, how much truth is there in this? Second, if I cut out the cardio, how will I burn off the excess fat? Third, if it's OK to include cardio along with weight training, how much should I do? I can only spare 30 minutes in the morning for cardio so how many times a week would be good given that I'm also trying to gain muscle? The cardio I do is not intense. It's enough to get my heart rate up to 160, it makes me sweat a lot, it makes my legs slightly sore, but it's by no means what I would call intense which is why I don't see it as being excessive. So how much cardio should I do?
