Hello Everyone,
I need some sound advice ( or gentle comfort, perhaps:) ) and any comments that might help me understand the possible implications of a seemingly unhealthy protime reading.
In the morning, I am having surgery to remove superficial blood clots from a varicose vein in my leg. One of the clots located just above the knee has grown to the size of a golf ball. I am serious, it really is!
I have been off coumadin for 6 days now preparing for the surgery and partial vein closure from groin to the knee on the offending vein. After the removal of the clots, the vein will be closed to the ankle after a week.
I had a Protime check yesterday, the results are as follows.
12.1 Protime
0.09 INR
I am so apprehensive about these readings. Have anyone experienced numbers in that range?
I would appreciate all input, please respond with any comments.
Thanking you in advance,
Ish

Hi Ish,
you had replied to my post "Gas trouble and respiratory problem" under "Digestive Disorder" heading. Thanks for the reply and I want to help you on this. I am not a very knowledged person about protime, but I would like to tell you this. My thought in life has always been: "Whatever happens is for your own good. And no matter, God will not let down you". Well, I don't know if you believe in God, but this theory really works and has helped me in all the occasions. So, don't worry. Everything will go on well. Pls post a reply either on this thread or on my thread "Gas Trouble and Respiratory problem" after your successful surgery. Get well soon friend..

Ish,
I'm so sorry you've got to go through all of this. I have a huge DVT in my leg and have had a very difficult time getting my PT/INR levels regulated. It looks like to me, that your levels are a bit high, but that's to be expected when you've been off of the Coumadin in anticipation of your surgery. I'm sure you will have everything back to normal after your surgery and are back on the Coumadin if needed. I KNOW it's hard not to be apprehensive, but I would tell the doctors tomorrow your worries. They will help answer any concerns you have.
I wish you only the best.

You are off coumadin now, so your PT and INR will now be in the "normal" range. When you are on coumadin, the PT will be elevated with a INR usually between 2.0 and 3.0
Good luck with your surgery.

Yes being off the coumadin prior to the surgery your blood will be "thicker" so to speak. as someone already said normal INR is 2.0 to 3.0. Now being .09 is obviously more viscous but once you resume the coumadin your blood will be "normal" so to speak as far as clotting time goes. Dont worry about it. I know thats easy for me to say, im not the one facing surgery. But what will worrying about it get you. An ulcer. In tears. And what will that change. Absolutely nothing.
Good luck with the surgery. You WILL BE OK. :)
