So I Have Had Severe Back Pain For 10 Months, Since Having A C Section In May 2006....i Have Had Numerous Mri's, Xrays, Etc...i Have Some Small Disc Protrusions But It Turns Out My Issues Are More Muscluar And Joint...i Have Been On Percocet For 10 Months Now....only 2 To 6 A Day, Mostly 4....now I Am Seeing A Chiropractor And It Seems As Though He Will Be Able To Help Me, Well My Primary Figured It Was Time To Stop The Percocets, Without Warning And Without A Chance To Wean Off Them!!! Not To Mention That I Have Only Been Seeing The Chiro For 2 Weeks Now And I Still Have Pain...so Will I Withdraw? What Is Going To Happen? I Have 2 Young Kids To Take Care Of....what Do I Do? Was This Right For Him To Take Me Off Them Like That? Thank You All

Cam, what milligram perc's were they. You're probably gonna have some w/d's regardless but if they were 5 mg's then probably not as bad as if they were higher. In my opinion, no he absolutely should not have just cut you off, especially since you were not abusing them. If you do start having w/ds, I'd call him up ASAP and tell him to do something!! You may want to go to a pain mgmt clinic and see if they can help. Be honest with them about your fears of becoming physically dependent, because honestly that's what you are. You're not hiding your use, getting them dishonestly, taking them for other than when they're needed, or taking more than rx'd. I don't think your an addict, but you can become dependent on them, and he shouldn't have cut you off after 10 months of rx'ing them to you. Pitch a fit, do whatever you have to do if you start having problems. You didn't do this, and he shouldn't have left you to deal with it alone.

Dear Cam,

Unfortunately many docs and surgeons are notarious for dropping a patient off a pain reliever such as percocet with no warning. Definitely call him and let him know that you are very concerned. The least he should do is to design a taper plan for you so you are not thrown into withdrawals, which is what will most likely happen. As one of the previous posters stated, you were not abusing this med and took it as your doc RX'ed.

The doc shouldn't have done this to you, some docs infact are being sued for undermedicating pain patients, and suddenly stopping a strong narcotic that they themselves prescribed to you in the first place. If you have to get nasty, let him know that he started you on percocets in the first place and needs to help you step down slowly from this med. Even the info letters that the pharmacy puts in with your script, recommends strongly that if you have been on this medication for any length of time such as yourself, that you indeed need to step down gradually.

Bring up these points if you have to, you can be firm and still friendly, but I wouldn't allow the doc to just stop prescribing the percocets, but have a successful tapering plan in place, so you can return back to a fun healthy life without them. I hope this helps.

That was really rotten of your Dr to just cut you off like that. Did he give you any warning signs that this might happen and that you were going to be cut off? was he getting irritated with you asking for refills, did he show you he wasn't thrilled with you taking them? Also did you ever call for a RX early or did you ever loose your pills or give him any indication that you might be addicted to them and using them incorrectly? I am sort of shocked that a Dr would do this with no warning unless you might have given him a reason to believe you were abusing them... Please think back and note if he ever mentioned the word " addiction" or if he was feeling uncomfortable with prescribing them to you. Dr's normally cut patients off only if they are asking for early refills or saying they lost there pills and need more before the RX is do to be refilled.

If you were really ligitimate here, than I would ABSOUTLEY call him and ask him to at least taper you off and allow you to wean down because believe me, you WILL have major withdrawls after being on the pills for 10 months straight. that is HIDEOUS of him to do to you if you honestly were a compliant patient with no warnings signs of this happening.... I have never had a DR do that to me.

good luck and call him immediatley and ask to be tapered down, this is ludicrous of him if you abided by the rules of narcotics being prescribed.
