My husband got sick a few times yesterday morning and he told me last night that his vomit was black. I've never heard of this, so I did an online search and I still don't know what the heck it could be. I told him to schedule an appointment with this doc, but chances are he won't. I'm just wondering if anyone had something similar and if so have any idea what caused it?

Does it look like coffee grounds? Even if it doesn't, if it's black it could be an upper GI bleed; it needs to be seen by a doctor ASAP.

Hi, it could have been blood that has been in the stomach for quite a while. And it's important that he gets it checked out. If it really is internal bleeding, it could be dangerous. Has he vomited any more of the black stuff after that night? Get checked early than later! Good luck.

Btw, did the vomit have any iron taste?

generally, anytime someone vomits and it is blackish in color,it IS what the other posters have stated, blood.it is partially digested blood.he could have possibly an ulcer or some other upper GI problem that is causing him to actively bleed into his stomach.he most definitely needs to have this evaluated, today if possible.people do not just vomit up blood for no reason, there IS something that is periodically bleeding in him.is he complaining of pain anywhere at all,it doesn't actually have to be the stomach either?this does need looking into.if you call his docs office and tell them whats been going on,i am certain that they will want to see him today.you just really have to find out where this is actually stemming from, soon.please keep us posted as to what you find out,K?good luck to the both of you,i am hoping this is just an ulcer or some other easily treatable medical problem.let us know.FB

Thanks for all the respones! I asked him about whether or not it looked like coffee grounds, he said no, and if it had an iron taste, he said no, and he has not vomited since Wednesday morning. I asked him if he made an appointment, after he was telling me that it worried him, and big surprise - he said no. I also asked him if he's any pain that could be due to an ulcer and he said no. I'm going to bully him until he calls, and I'll keep everyone updated!

Sorry your going thru all of this, I swear the only way husbands get to the hospital is by ambulance when their laying there unconcious. They are sooo difficult!!!!!

Hope he's feeling better.

I know I freaked out one night, hubby was out drinking and he threw up and he said it was all red~freaked us both out, I called the ER and asked if he should be brought in....she said "do you think its an emergency?" well duh I think he's throwing up BLOOD!!!

After an hour we remembered he had a cold and was eating red cough drops all day, the "red" wasnt "red" it was PINK from the cough drops!!!!!!

Did he eat anything strange?

Hope

I don't think he ate anything strange, and he doesn't drink a lot. He got home late from work and said he didn't feel good, that he had the chills and was really tired. So he hopped in the shower and went to bed. When he woke up that's when he threw up blood.

I've been looking online some more and it looks like it could be related to heartburn and he's had so much heartburn lately. He wakes up with it in the middle of the night and it keeps him up. I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I called him just now at work and he said he'll make an appointment for Monday or Tuesday. I said "okay, well let's just hope you don't die in the meantime." It's definitely a guy thing!

I thought I had a stomach virus two years ago. It was coming out both ends, black. I did not think much of it, after 24 hrs, felt ok. A couple of weeks later, I started feeling really tired and getting chest pains. The chest pains scared me enough to go to my gp. I all kinds of test, and finally found out that I my hemaglobin had dropped from 13.1 to 8.1 in a matter of three weeks. I was anemic which caused all my problems. All that black coming out was blood. I had no pain and thought I was healthy for most part. My doctor said if I had not been in such great shape, he would have admitted me into the hospital that day. Did go to a GI, he found 16 ulcers. Never had a day of heartburn or indigestion. Seemed that I had a bacteria, H-Plyori which caused the ulcers. Tooks meds, and lots of IV iron and two years later, finally feeling better. So tell you hubby to get to the doctor sooner than later.
