I just read an article and it was taking about new meds for pain management. The article said it may lesson types of nerve pain. Has anyone here used either of these for nerve pain? When you ****** these nothing is mentioned about using them for nerve pain. Thanks

I'd also like to hear others experience with this combination of meds.

I know Cymbalta is advertised to help with pain and depression.

Hi Katirina:wave:  Gabapentin is for nerve pain even though it doesn't say so on the info. I take Gabapentin for nerve pain associated with RSD(reflex sympathetic dystrophy) for me it is a very good drug for nerve pain. Some people differ and like the brand Lyrica instead. I don't what Venlafaxine is though.

Katrina-
Although Neurontin (Gabapentin) is actually used in treating seizures, doctors do use it "off label" for treating nerve pain. I too use it for my saphenous neuropathy. Once it had time to build up in my system to a constant level, it really showed improvement in my nerve pain. I had to get over the sleepiness, but once my body adjusted, I was glad I kept giving it a try.

Ozzybug, I just started Gabapentin 2 weeks ago. I'll start 3 doses tomorrow, 100 mg.

Is this how you started the med and how long did it take for you to notice relief?

Thanks, Kim

Hi there,

The Gabapentin (Neurontin) on certain websites for medicine (we can't post any here) shows that it specifically is used to treat neuralgia which is nerve pain and I think that it's what most people are put on it for here???....I only took it for one day a few years back as I had a terrible reaction to it and had to stop it immediately...

The Venlafaxine (Effexor) is used to treat "major depressive disorder, ie: depression and anxiety. A depression medication is not unusual to be added to the mix to help with pain mgmgt. to help the patient deal with the chronic pain...I haven't specifically heard of this one being used "off label" by Dr.s for nerve pain. I have a friend who was on it for severe depression (suicidal tendancies) and he had to change to Lexapro because of the bad side effects he had on it....

I take Cymbalta for my nerve pain and it is one of those as well that it is listed for both depression and for arthritic type of pain.....Even though I have never been "diagnosed" with depression....I find it a very helpful medicine to keep my mood happy with living with chronic pain as every here can attest to...it can surely get us down on some days...I just had my 3rd major cervical surgery in 5 years and going through a divorce so even though my Dr. suggested that I could start coming off it for the nerve pain...I wanted to stay on to make sure that I handle all the "stresses" in the best way possible....Along with counseling, exercise, and all the other things to stay healthy...

Anyway, I didn't want to break any rules by "leading" you to a specific website but there are many out there that are just for prescriptions (not just a search) and give you exactly what you would read on the literature that you recieve at the pharmacy....I have found this very helpful to look over when discussing medicines with my Dr..or looking up one's from here...

Is your Dr. recommending that you take these? May I ask what your diagnosis is?

Hope that others will chime in as well to help you since I only had that one bad experience with the Neurontin....

Blessings,
Ingrid

I started out on 300 mg 3 x a day but I can't be sure how long it took because it's been 3 yrs ago. But it didn't seem like it took very long to take effect but at the time I was in so much pain anything at that time took an edge of the pain I was in.

I have osteoporosis and severe spinal stenosis with terrible tailbone pain (not sure it that is from the spinal stenosis or not). I am 59 and only found I had this 1 1/2 yrs ago and it has gotten very bad. I have been on Lyrica (going to go off it as it doesn't help. I started on Vicodin and am now on Percoset 7.5/325mg 2 to 4 times a day and ultram 4 times a day and some muscle relaxers and amitryptoline for migraines and nerve pain. I have been having steroid injections but they don't help. I work full time 4-10 hr days and it is driving me crazy with the pain at work and now the pills are helping. When I heard of this medicine I was interested. I have had physical therapy, tenns unit with no relief. I am seeing a surgeon this month (although i really don't want surgery) but I want to see what one would have to say. This board is great; thanks.

Well I've been on Neurontin 600mg 3x a day. 4 maximum. I've been using the Neurontin 600mg for almost 4 years.

I tried Lyrica for 4 months.

Neither one did anything for me.

The Neurontin is used to treat both my neuropathy in my feet as well as my "nerve" pain in my hands.
I was born with something called syndactality. Before I was the age of 5; I had several surgeries to correct my condition as well as skin grafts done.

In June 2000 I had bone sawed off on my left middle finger, and my pinky. On my right hand I had bone sawed off on my pointer finger, my middle finger and my pinky finger.
Ever since the surgey in 2000 when the weather changes or goes below 40 degrees (which is ALOT in North Dakota) the fingers where I had the bone sawed down feels like their on fire.
It hurts so bad that I can't touch anything;wash myself, or hold stuff. So pretty much all winter long I need care.

You can see the bone thorugh the skin. And all the tips are very sensitive.

And NO the neurontin doesn't do anything for me. I keep telling my Dr that and she doesn't listen to me. So I am pretty much stuck with my pain. Sometime this year I am due to have another surgery and I am not looking forward to it because their sawing my middle finger in half (it is almost a full finger with no joint and I've broken it 2; and their sawing more bone down in my right pointer finger)

Hi Ingrid, many drugs are used for off label purposes, Meaning something they didn't recieve FDA aproval for. Only a couple of meds from the antidepressant class and anti seizure class have actually done the clinical trials to get FDA aproval for treatment of pain or nerve pain. However they have been used for years or decades for that very purpose. Antidepressants are used to treat pain, not just the depression associated with chronic pain, but because they reduce substance P, a potent neuro inflamatory agent that is found in high concetrations in CP patientsspinal fluid.

Anti seizure meds are also used to treat pain but are usually reserved specifically for neuropathic pain, They have used Neurontin to treat shingles for at least 15 years that I know of, even though it's never gone through the clinical trial process It's also used to treat many other types of nerve pain. If docs were restricted to using drugs only for their FDA aproved use, many meds that help thousands of people simply wouldn't be available.

Using a med for an off label use doesn't mean it's not effective, it simply means the company that invented the drug hasn't spent the milions of dollars and years of clinical trials to get FDA aproval to treat every other condition drugs in these classes have shown over the years to benefit. Often drugs are developed for one reason and found to help other problems. Just because it's not in the full prescribing info, doesn't mean it's not common practice among specific specialties to use meds for reasons other than their initial intended purpose. The info in the full prescribing instructions of each med is the info that was submitted to the FDA simply to get it on the market for one specific purpose.

Furtunately doctors are allowed to use meds for reasons other than what the drug was given FDA aproval for. If they were to prevent docs from using drugs for off label use, many drugs used to treat chronic pain and many other conditions simply wouldn't be available if a manufacturer was required to run a clinical trial on every possible use of a drug.

Neurontin and other drugs in the anti seizure class along with antidepressants have been used succesfully to treat different types of chronic pain for at least the 14 years I've been seeing PM docs and been involved in pain management. Prior to the invention of Oxycontin in 96 and the 180 degree shift in some docs thinking rergarding the use of opiates, These were the only meds aside from anti inflamatories and anti anxiety meds used to treat chronic pain.
You should also understand that just because one drug from that class doesn't help, it doesn't mean a different anti seizure med or different anti depressant won't benefit. Treating painis simply trial and error. Somepeople respond to nerotin, some do better with Toppamax or one of the dozen or more other anti seizure meds. Elevill was the first anti deprerssant used to treat chrioonic pain and reduce substance P. Since the 80's when Elevil was first used for CP, new clases and different types of anti depressants have been developed and they are now being used and have the same benfit. It's just a matter of finding what works best for you.
Good luck Dave

Hey Dave,

Thank you for all the information..I knew that you would know a lot:):)

I think I misquoted myself when I said the Neurontin is "specifically" used for the nerve pain since like you said, many drugs are used "off label" for things...

Like my Cymbalta...it's used for me to help with the nerve pain and for those with arthritis but that's not mentioned anywhere on webistes or on the literature..

I think it's such a great medicine since I also get the benefits of having a depression medication to keep my mood steady and happy living with chronic pain...but i know there are lots out there that do not like it and had bad reactions like I did to other meds...

So, I totally agree it's all trial and error and thank you for clearing things up since, next to you, I have some long rambling posts...HAHAH....YOU aren't rambling....just me:):)

Hope everyone has a pain "lite" day today.....I am sooo happy to have our windows open for the first time and the birdies chirping here in Northern Virginia.....The doggies are running wild in the backyard...Hooray for small blessings!!!

Blessings,
Ingrid
