Along with all of my pain issues, I am having and issue with my mom that has me horribly depressed. Back in Sept. she was on her way (on foot) to make a bank deposit for her work (68 and still working, what an amazing woman). Anyway as she was crossing the street, the light was in her favor, a truck came barrelling around the corner and hit her. She has had to have multiple surgeries on her wrist, knee and shoulder. Her last one was a complete shoulder replacement. When she came out of surgery they could not get her temp and blood pressure back up to normal, so they kept her serveral days longer than expected. They finally let her go home, but her blood pressure keeps bottoming out. She is on a host of medications, thyroid, bp (which I beleive they have temp discontinued, zoloft and darvect for pain as well a s few others I can't think of right now. So now they have her back in the hospital and the prognosis is not good considering her ongoing medical conditions.
Anyway, my dad is in not much better shape and he called me yesterday to see if I could come. Here is my delema. My scripts aren't due until Tues and my parents live in SC and I live in KY a good eight to nine hours away. Without me meds, I would be in no shape to drive there and one ther wouldn't be of much help to anyone.
I am calling tomorrow to see if I can either get an emergency appointment as early as possible or if he will write my scripts early only one day). Fortunately my doc is a great guy, but with all the DEA restrictions, I am afraid he won't be able or willing to help, even with these extenuating circumstances.
I don't think I coud live with myself If something happened to my mom and I wasn't there for her. Even with all of her own medical problems, she has been my rock as she understands the debilitating pain I live with. Also, my dad, who doesn't understand chronic pain would never forgive me if I don't come as quickly as I can.
Please help me. The stress has caused a major flare and I have had very little sleep since this all happened. Oh and btw, I have a younger brother and sister who have done nothing to help my mom through all this. As the oldest and the one who is on disability, it has fallen entirely on me. My brother I can kind of understand as he is a single father with two young sons, but my sister is a judgemental b**ch and doesn't beleive in chronic pain.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Oh and thanks for all the support I receive from this board although I mostly lurk and rarely post, but on the few occassion I have, I received nothing but compassion and support. Thanks to all for any replies.

Lotty-
I am so sorry about what is going on with your family. It sounds like your parents really do need some backup. I'm sending positive thoughts your way for you and your mom & dad!
As for an early refill- some doctors will allow for 1 early refill per year. My doctor will allow 1 early a year, but he requires his patients to provide proof of their travel plans. Some doctors won't allow for any kind of early refill though.
It sounds like you have a good relationship with your doctor, so I'm sure if you let him know this is a family emergency he can accommodate your needs.
Please be safe, and let us know how things are going! I will keep you & your family in my thoughts & prayers.

I hope he doesn't ask for travel arraingements as I am going to have to drive. No $$ for an airplane and trains and buses take far too long. I just hope he'll help me because if not, my plans are going to be seriously delayed and the fallout from the family will be HELL. My appt tomorrow isn't until 2:15 and you know how long you can sit in a doctors office. That means at the earliest, I'll be able to leave around 7:00 pm tomorrow night. In the meantime if the worst happens, I don't think I could live with myself.
I can't beleive with CP has done to my life. A few years ago(well quite a few years ago), I would have just jumped in the car and taken off. Now the thought of an eight hour trip, plus what waits for me when I get there has me in a full blown flare, not to mention a panic attack.
Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. I can use all I can get at this point.

Hi there,
I can emphathize with your situation and am sorry that your mom is not doing well and I will say prayers for her, your dad, and your travel plans....
I was in the same situation with my mother in law when she had a stroke in RI and I live in Virginia....
Since you said you have a caring Dr. I agree that you can try to call him and just ask to just drop by to pick up your scripts early today because of the emergency and not actually have an appt...I would make another appt. with them so they know that you are not just leaving it up in the air...
I travel almost every month and have had to do this many times to rearrange my actual appt. and just swing by to pick up my scripts before a flight since I fly standby a lot and don't always know when I am leaving....But I always have a monthly appt. to actually see my doc...it just maybe tweaked by some days....
This way you can use what you have left until then and then take them with you and fill them at at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club or Target, etc....these places cost the least amount for non-insurance medicine but if you bring your insurance card with you, they will be able to fill those while you are in SC...You can actually call your insurance company and let them know that you are needed them to be filled at a different place for this one time so it stays clear with them that you aren't switching pharmacies all the time and of course your Dr. will know this as well....
This is why I use Sam's Club (where you don't have to have a membership) and can be filled there or at any Wal-Mart (same company) anywhere in the US....
This way you can leave directly after you pick the script up andd just wait to fill your prescriptions when they are due down in SC...
Or, as others have said, most insurances and Dr.s will allow a day early pick up of scripts....you just need to call your insurance and talk to them directly and/or have your Dr. to call and confirm as well...depending on how "sticky" they are with everything...
Just FYI....you can prove "travel plans" by car by showing gas receipts, dining, etc....I had to do this once traveling to my dad's in NC because a few years ago...someone ELSE took my prescription from my Dr.s office....(don't use them now) because they didnt' require a signature.....the receptionist said that they "looked" like me......So I PROVED to my Dr. that it couldnt' possibly have been me since I was in NC and showed him my time stamped gas receipt, ATM, dining, etc.....
Again, I will pray for your family and keep us posted if you can...
Blessings,
Ingrid

Well, just my luck, my doc is out for the morning. The receptionist was wonderful though and promised to have my scripts ready by 2:30. Unfortunately, I am under contract with them, so I can only use one pharmacy. I called them as well and since they are a "mom & pop" store, they know me by name and said it wouldn't be a problem. They also called my insurance company and they allow refills up to 5 days early. So I should be outa here by 5:00 pm at the latest. My father in law is going to come stay with my kids, my son is on homebound schooling for the next couple of months until we get his migraines under control. Poor kid, he's only 13 and this has been really hard on him.
Sorry to go on and on and on with all my problems, but I feel like if ONE MORE THING HAPPENS I'LL JUST LOOSE IT!!!
Thanks for all the support. I think GOD must have guided me here because I just happened on this forum one day when I was doing some research on CP.
Thanks again guys for everything. Take care and have a pain free day.

Hi there,
I will pray for safe travels and that your mom gets the best absolute care...
If I could offer one suggestion, based on the things that can go wrong with medical care and coming from experience with some particular Dr.s, insurance, pharmacies, etc....I would journal this experience down and just keep the receipts from your trip that shows your travel and the times/dates and the same for when you called the Dr. yesterday/today and picking up your script early...
This way, it's just one less thing to ever have to think about if it's drawn into question down the road....I hope that it never does and it sounds like you have a great and understanding Dr. and your pharmacy...I am just OVERLY cautious because of the mistakes and things that have happened in the past years with reference to these things and now I document EVERYTHING....so that I have proof for upholding my end of the bargain with my medicine...
I know it's down on your priority list with your mom but something to think about....
Again, I will be praying...
Blessings,
Ingrid
