I had new blood work done last thursday to get a current platelet count for my hematology appointment tomorrow (it was 442 Feb 13th and 420 in 1999). I do not know the results, I am assuming I will find out tomorrow.
What can I expect to encounter in this appointment? And why am I so nervous?

I do not think you have anything to worry about.
remember that by 442 you actually mean 442 000. So the increase between 420 000 and 442 000 is actually insignificant. It is normal to have some variations in blood results.
If the heamo suggests follow up just to make sure your platelets do not rise thats fine . If you d have a prob i think that the rise in 8 years would have been much more evident.
Did you get checked as routine or was there a problem? How old are you?
Try to relax and follow your heamo s advice.

Thanks for the response Amy
I am 32 years old.
I was in for my regular check up and blood work. Little did I know I would be getting a call back the next day, My BP was was too high and needed to go on meds, My cholesteral was very high, and my platelets were high too, according to the dr. She said that in 1999, it was recommended I see hematology but that message never made its way to me. And my platelets were always between 420 and 440 from 1999 till now but my mulitple doctors (my primary kept changing) always thought I was already meeting with them so they never brought the results with me. Nice huh?
I am not one to have problems medically, so even this little thing along with my blood pressure are freaking me out, I think because these 2 things I cannot feel the symptoms so I just keep thinking about it. It sux...

Believe me i know what you mean about one med problem being more than enough. I was diagnosed with ET a while back . Now have thyroid problems which probably are the cause of my infertility. ANd i am only 27yrs old.
When considering all the obstacles i need to deal with pregnancy(due to ET) i feel that any other problem is "extra".
But there s nothing much one can do to prevent such things.
I really don t think you have any thing to worry about re the platelets. I think that the high chol and bp are issues which you need to control. Are you careful with your diet? You ll be surprised to know which foods contain most chol if you do some research. Do you exercise regularly? Are you on meds for the high bp? You re young so its very imp to do your best to have these controlled. And that is why your dr wants to keep an eye on your platelets . Since high bp, high chol and high platelets may cause circulatory problems individually. The risk further increases with the combination of all these risk factors. So try to control the bp and chol.
Good luck

Thanks again for responding, I will let you know tomorrow when I get back to work after the appointment.
Yes I am on a diet, have been for a few years, I am an avid, almost lifetime member of Weigth Watchers. I am far from overweight and never really was over weight. I was losing baby fat from 2 kids. I do exercise regularly, and also have been doing that. High BP and High Chol are on both sides of my family and I am the only one not on meds, so it was a matter of time. I am just on BP meds right now and have been for about 2 weeks now.
Wish me luck
