I need advice. I have been seeing the same GP for 20 yrs. He told me awhile back that I was manic depressive, which I didn't know was Bipolar. But the only thing I was ever treated with was anti-depressants. I have been through everything from prozac to paxil to zoloft and those in between. I have been going through this for years. Right after he would put me on a new med, I would get better for a while (hypo-manic) and then fall back further down than I was. Of course I would also get mean and at times violent, but I never put it together with the meds and having manic episodes. But about a month ago, I almost shot my daughter(23 yrs old with a smart mouth). So I went in and told him, and then he recommends a pdoc(after yrs of suffering and btw I still don't have my appointment)So anyway, during the past 3 months, I haven't hardly been able to eat, and have went from 126lbs to 111lbs. I went in this past week and ask for something to help stimulate my appetite, to which he replies..I will give you this shot(cortizone) and MAYBE it will help, but we don't need to let you go down too far.:dizzy: I called today and ask for him to call me in something because I still don't want to eat, so they call me back and tell me he is out of town and I will have to wait until Wed to see what he wants to do. I told the nurse I thought that was a little too long to wait and maybe she could have one of the other 2 Dr's call it in....she said she would talk to them and I heard nothing else from them. I called the pharmacy and neither Dr had called anything in. I am so confused and scard right now that I don't know what to do. Does any one else have this problem with appetite with their depression?Has anyone else ever lost this much weight when they were like this? I also get these thoughts in the back of my mind that maybe I am Dying from something and that is my problem....The Dr has run all kinds of blood tests and he only thing he says is wrong physically, is my ulcer and G.E.R.D....

I don't know...I am scared and don't know what to do.....

Any suggestions???

Sorry this is so long.....

Good Morning, BPinBama ~ I am sorry that you are not getting the medical care that you should be gettting. IF you are BP, my guess is that if you get on the right meds to get you out of this depression then your appetite will pick up an things should improve. However, your doctor seems to have mismanaged your BP and shame on him for not referring you to a board certified psychiatrist before this time.:nono:

The antidepressants will only throw you into a mania and if I am not mistaken, any cortisteriod will do the same. (I believe that Patty Duke-Austin's BP was diagnosed when she was given some cortisone shot for asthma which threw her into a full blown mania:eek:) So your doctor suggesting such a thing raises BIG red flags.

I think that you should do anything you can do to see if you can move that appointment up so that you can be diagnosed and treated much sooner. Certainly if you are having thoughts of either hurting yourself or others you should go to the ER and tell them so and be admitted which will be the fastest way to be treated and once you are discharged you will have to have a followup appointment with a psychiatrist within a few days. So that would be your quickest way of getting the help that you need.

You sound as if you are cycling and that your mania is getting worse. Please do something while you can....if this gets worse you won't know what to do. I would also instruct your daughter or anbody in the household that if you get violent in anyway, instruct them to call the authorities and tell them that you have BP and they will take you in to be evaluated immediately.

Hang in there and keep on calling any resources that you can to get some help. Do you have a Mental Health Clinic in your area that perhaps can see you even sooner??? Explain your history and your incident with the gun. They will have to accommodate you earlier.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing....Goody:angel:

Hey BPinBahama,

aww I'm so sorry that you haven't been getting medical attention like you should. If you BP then anti-depressants will spring you in to manic epsidoes, so I really don't understand why your doctor suggested them.

Anyway's about the eating thing, that's a commen thing in bipolar symthoms, you either get decreased need for food or increased need for food.

About almost shooting your daughter that should of been a wake-up call to your doctor and you still don't have a appointment something is wrong with the world today. You should just try to relax and post on here when you feel bad or need to vent about your day, were all ear, well actully were all eyes.

BTW I doubt your dying and it's not good to worry yourself like that, just try to relax and take a deep beath and hold your head high.

Also like Goody said if you do think about hurting yourself or somebody else [i.e. your daughter] then you should addmint yourself into the ER, that way you want do any damage to yourself or your loved ones.

Also like she said if you feel like you might get volent then tell someone you trust to call the authorities to take you in.

I wish you luck
-Kristen

Thank You Goody2shuz and Kristen for your replies. I have already got the gun into a safe place where I can not get to it....I don't want it around me right now. I am also praying that I can get in to see a pdoc soon, this is taking a toll on me and my family. Everyone please keep me and my family in your thoughts and prayers, as you are in mine:)

Dear BPinBama,

If you are on such thin ice that you have to keep the weapon away from yourself, it is actually a reasonable move to take yourself to the Emergency Room at your local hospital, and tell them that you think you are bipolar, and experiencing a mixed state of mania and depression.

The most likely thing they would do, would be to put you in the hospital for a week or so, and get you on meds to bring your mood disorder into regulation. While you were there, you could see if anyone could look at the other problems you have.

I know that answer is a bit dramatic, but almost shooting your daughter isn't any less, and I think it is in line with how rotten you are feeling.

Being bipolar is NOT your fault. And your regular doctor is no longer helping you well enough.

If you really feel you cannot trust yourself, go to the hospital. Really. You might not want to mention that you felt like shooting your daughter, but you could say that you felt it necessary to remove the firearm.

Please do post again, and give updates. Obviously, other people on this list, as well as myself, care what happens to you.

ps. there are some bipolar people in my family.

:)

BPinBama - I'm very sorry to hear about how frustrated you are at the moment. Just remember that this is NOT your fault. You can not help the fact that your family doctor isn't up to par so to speak? You have been trying to seek answers for how you feel for so many years now ... it is not your fault that the medically qualified person in your life wasn't able to properly approach your problems. I've been stuck with doctors too that keep insisting on prescribing anti-depressant/anti-anxiety medication when it just makes me worse. I guess I'm partially to blame for the fact I can't convey to them how serious the situation is.

I have to agree that if you feel like you're about to break then you should seek more serious help. Don't make the mistake of trying to downplay the seriousness of the issue.
