Can someone please tell me- Is it possible to have acid reflux without a hiatus hernia? -& if so, what would cause it?

I am in the early stages of learning about this, & am scheduled to see a gasto. specialist soon. I have never had heart burn as such I don't think, but I've had a lot of bloated indigestion type discomfit for a long time, & more recently severe chest pain when lieing down. Heart/artery disease has been ruled out. I've also had an undiagnosed cough for about 5 years.

Also what causes hiatus hernia if one has one? I suppose I'm just wondering about how this condition comes about! Thanx for reading! :)

I have it and I don't have a hiatel hernia. With the bloating watch out of the Rolaids, tums etc. they cause bloating. Also eat more fiber if your constipated which can also cause bloating. I've switched to whole grain bread (real whole grain, not wonder bread whole grain).

I've never heard of a connection between reflux and hiatal hernias. There is definitely one between reflux/allergies/asthma, though.

Thanx for your replies! :) That's interesting about the asthma! I've had that for about 15 years now! Ah well we'll see what the tests show. ;)
