View Full Version : Could this be a DVT?

Good Morning. I hoping that you all can give me some advice since from what I've read you all have a lot more experience with this than I do.

I am 28 years old and have had 4 children, the last one was born about 6 months ago. In order to get pregnant with my last pregnancy I was put on Estrogen patches and pills. I am now on birth control pills.

For the last month or so, the side of my leg (right side of my shin) has not felt quite right. It does not hurt for me to walk or stand on it, although it does become annoying as the day goes on and the swelling in my leg gets worse. It hurts incredibly bad though when I kneel down on the floor to play with my kids or to give them a bath, then the pain is peircing and horrible. I have no obvious bruises on my leg though. Sometimes it will hurt if I push on the spot and sometimes it won't. But the leg swelling and the intense pain that I feel when putting pressure on it has me concerned. That coupled with the fact that I have a few of the risk factors including being overweight, being on birth control and having been on estrogen replacement therapy.

I did talk to my doc about it and she is sending me for a Venous Doppler Study because she said that sometimes DVT's can hide and not present with the normal symptoms. Unfortunately I can't get in for this doppler study until the 24th, so for now I'm left wondering and worrying.

So what do you think? Should I be concerned? Are dvt's almost always in the calf, because the pain that I'm having is more on the front right of my leg? Also, with a dvt would my leg be swollen all day and to the same degree or would it be worse in the evening? What I'm experiencing is worse (as far as swelling goes) in the evening, although the pain is always there.

Thanks for any insight or advice. I truly appreciate it!

Sounds like varicose veins..that gets worse as the days goes on. Try some tight support hose (put on before you walk around in the morning) That can relieve the pain. Good that you are being tested tho, as you say, a few risk factors.

I know you don't have the same exact symptoms as a dvt, mine were a little different. I did however experience pain in my shin and in random places all over my leg. I had and still have swelling, redness to the leg and severe pain. Mine was caused from birth control pills. Just be careful! If you are really concerned I would just go to the E.R. It's not worth the wait if it were me. I wish I would have caught mine earlier. You have to be careful with dvt that a clot doesn't break off and go to your lung. I am really surprised that your doctor is saying that it is ok for you to wait til the 24th. If I were you, I wouldn't...your health is too important.
