Can someone tell me what LY stands for on blood test results. On my last set of results taken 3/12/07 it says the normal range for LY is 20.5 - 51.1. I don't have the results for ferritin or iron saturation, but some of the other's were:

RBC - 4.24 (4.00-6.00)
HGB - 12.4 (11.0 - 18.0)
HCT - 37.3 (35.0 - 60.0)
MCHC - 33.3 (33.0 - 37.0)
MPV - 6.1 (7.8-11.0)

Those numbers are all within the normal ranges it appears, that's why the doctor says I'm not anemic. I'm mostly concerned about the hemaglobin. My last doctor was telling me it was 14 back in January, now when I called her to find out why I was feeling so tired she is saying it was really 12.4 back then. That's a big difference for that particular number.

In looking online, it appears that "LY" can be an abbreviation for lymphocyte count.

As far as anemia, no it doesn't look as if you are anemic, but that certain doesn't rule out iron deficiency.

My specialist, the last one called today with the rest of my results. My ferritin is 11 as of 3/12/07, down from 23 in January. Iron saturation is 23%, up from 16%. The first number explains a lot, but it worries me, that large a drop in a short time. The second number is confusing. He made an appointment for IV iron in a couple of weeks and said I shouldn't put it off for too long. He also suggested I get a pelvic ultrasound to rule out fibriods. He said a regular pap smear wouldn't detect them, and I had one a few weeks ago. Can someone explain the colon test? I see a lot of people on this board have had them. I may have to get one if the ultrasound is normal. Is the test to rule out bleeding there? Is is painful or just uncomfortable? Thanks.

Fjones,
What was yout number for LY? My lymphocytes count was 22.6 with an L by it for low. I had a CBC with total iron tests, but I don't see ferrition on my lab sheet. Why are you getting the IV iron? What results is your Dr. using? Thanks!

My serum iron saturation was 20 with the range of 15-55. It's on the low side but ok I guess. Are you getting the IV iron because of your ferritin number? A colonoscopy isn't too bad. The prep isn't fun, but you are asleep for the tests. I've had my share of them!

I have also had the pelvic ultrasound (piece of cake).

The colonoscopy is where they take a long, flexible tube and with a camera on the end and they examine the entire length of your colon. The worst part of the test is preparing for it. You cannot eat solids for the entire day before the test, and then you have to drink a "prep" the night before to clean you out. You basically get the runs all night. It is not painful or anything--just an inconvenience and tiring.

The put you in a twilight sedation for the test and you it is fairly quick and painless.

My LY result was 14.2, which is low. My doctor said he wasn't worried about that number so much, he was more worried about the drop in ferritin, and also he wants to find out why I haven't raised it more with the supplements. I think that's why he wants to try the IV iron.
